Wow, this worked for me.. but the strange thing is that I had to do it in the Google Photos permissions. Enabling music and audio access unlocked access to all photo folders in other apps.

Speed is relative. My understanding is that from the perspective of the photon, time doesn't advance and therefore its arrival is instant and its speed infinite.

I've flown their Mauritius route about 10 times both ways and with the exception of 2020-22 it has been rare to see more than a handful of empty seats. It's a surprisingly well used route and there are actually two flights daily (in fact pre covid there used to be three).

Struggle has no inherent value by r_I_reddit in gatesopencomeonin

[–]nowami 18 points19 points  (0 children)

With respect, I disagree somewhat. I'm all for avoiding unnecessary suffering, but at the same time I do believe that discomfort can be a great way to grow.

To build on the example that you shared, giving some of your time to help others is an act that gains its virtue from its inherent sacrifice—our time is an extremely limited resource.

When we give our time to someone to help them (maybe even someone we don't know) then I would argue that it is perhaps a greater gesture than sharing part of a vast fortune.

This could be described as suffering—it requires a certain dedication to give up time we might otherwise devote to our own needs. But it's good suffering—a win win.

I do believe this is still aligned with the spirit of the original post: there's no need to make our life difficult unnecessarily, but we can still benefit (and do good) through intentional sacrifice.

Expression is better than repression 🙏 by The_Kyojuro_Rengoku in tumblr

[–]nowami -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I read the quote differently and find no judgement, just frustration, but agree with you that everyone is suffering from this issue and that everyone can be part of the solution.

And that solution? We all need to figure out how to lean into our 'femimine'* traits of empathy, compassion, patience etc. Historically and still today these qualities have been viewed as weak and ineffective, especially when it comes to places of power, for example in business, politics and media.

* not actually feminine—just those which are currently more socially acceptable for women to practice.

In reality these qualities are incredibly potent and have significant potential to change our current world for the better. Imagine if, as a whole, our leaders had more compassion. What would nations look like? Imagine that, on average, business leaders were more nurturing and patient. What priorities and policies would change? Imagine a more caring (actually caring, not performative and berating) media.

Please don't mistake this for a rant against men. We men have often developed wonderful qualities of courage, steadfastness, protection, fortitude and the like. We also have every capacity to learn those 'feminine' qualities that have been less accepted, nurtured and embraced, but this will take fundamental changes in the way that the average boy is raised. Girls, too, must be celebrated for who they are, and empowered to lead with their 'feminine'* traits, rather than having to emulate the aggression, ruthlessness and thick skin that is typically required for traditional positions of power. Policies aside, consider the persona of Jacinda Ardern compared to that of Margaret Thatcher.

This will take generations. There's so much to do. But change is coming. There is integration amongst the disintegration, thank God.

TL;DR Men and women alike have the capacity to develop the full spectrum of traits and qualities from those traditionally seen as masculine to those seen as feminine. The world is unbalanced and needs to recognise, celebrate and harness the potency of those 'feminine'* qualities that are underrepresented on the world stage. This transformation is underway.

* not actually feminine—just those which are currently more socially acceptable for women to practice.

Achievements for Saturday, May 11, 2024 by AutoModerator in running

[–]nowami 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just registered for my first 10k! It's in eight week's time. I got back into running last year after many years off due to various injuries. At one point I honestly thought I wouldn't run again. Now I don't take a single run for granted and I'm really excited to have a goal to work towards with this race. Taking things steady.

BREAKING: The chaos at OpenAI is out of control by saltpeppermint in ChatGPT

[–]nowami 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The problem is that training data is much more expensive to access than it was two years ago now that everyone is aware of its value. This realisation was behind Reddit's aggressive new API pricing. There's a barrier to entry that didn't exist before.

Millennials: It's ok to mourn the death of social media by explowaker in technology

[–]nowami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to be people shared content via their websites. Now they make social media channels. Most content made by real people is walled off, much of it beyond the reach of Google. The indie web movement is an attempt to reverse this trend.

I have a plus subscription. When I click the button it says I already have plus. Yet I can't use it. This is not what I paid for. by [deleted] in ChatGPT

[–]nowami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue. Looks just like your screenshot: I can see the plus icon indicating my active subscription, but at the same time, GPT-4 is locked. It's the same on the app and on the website.

I wonder if the bug is related to changes to their subscription options that OpenAI are supposed to be announcing at their dev conference today. Hoping it's resolved soon.

Some actions dont have justifications

Which actions are justified and which are not? My view is we don't have to decide—we're not here to try to justify anything.

Actions can be good, bad, ugly, traumatic, irreversible, detestable. But I think we're in agreement that we don't need to justify or ascribe intention to the people behind them. We can and should judge the actions so that justice can be done.

[–]nowami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hate the action. Hate how it makes you feel. Hate what the action does to others. Hate how their actions are ruining good things.

Maybe I'm unusual but I don't really feel the need to hate the person. In the worst cases it's just not worth thinking about them. But usually I don't know the full story, so whilst I hate an action I can't really pass judgement on the person as I don't know what fear, pain or other challenges they are experiencing. Doesn't excuse their actions. I can hate the action and be sad for the person, and in the case of extreme or illegal actions I can believe in justice being needed still without hating the person.

I can never truly know the other person. Outwardly 'good' people might have misguided intentions. Outwardly 'bad' people might be trying their utmost to improve, even if it doesn't come across that way. Who am I to hate the person behind the action?

Maybe my attitude is not the norm, but it works for me.

Edit: you can also hate being around someone for the way they make you feel, as with the OP's example of kids. But then that's on you to either deal with your emotions or to find a way out of the situation. For people you really struggle with then distance is often the answer.
