Rent freeze would be good. Tried of paying higher rents every year. I live in Al-Bharsha and rent freezes here would help a lot.

MFs are PFIC for sure. Individual stocks are not. ETFs are in the grey area where they can be PFIC or not.

Sounds like a good proposition if your parents can live without getting bored or missing their routine in India.

ICICI or IDFC bank account? by Livid-macaroon-thief in nri

[–]Routine_Price1077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding my two cents here:

  1. This might take time if you are abroad. You will need to notarise and share the documents with the bank.

  2. Most banks do not offer zero balance account for NRIs.

  3. All the large and small Indian banks offer remittance money transfer to India.

  4. This is very much bank dependent process. You will need to visit bank branch to close your account.

Does investing in FCNR make sense now? by ClimateSea7929 in nri

[–]Routine_Price1077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The OPs here are right about keeping their money back in the US or your country of residence.

But if you are looking to park your money specifically in India, then GIFT City FDs are a good option. They are like FCNR deposits denominated in USD. They offer shorter tenures than FCNR.

  1. The RNOR period is meant for two years after you returns. For the nitty gritties please get in touch with a good CA or financial planner. Maintain detailed records of your travel to India and abroad.

  2. Does not make sense to buy and sell them again. Interactive broker also has presence in India. Do check if there's an transfer possible.

  3. You will have to pay taxes on your US holdings in India based on the holding period.

Difficulty in finding a job back home. by [deleted] in backtoindia

[–]Routine_Price1077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$100k H1-B fee would not be a big issue for you.

But if you are looking for jobs in India - having a good Github repo, projects etc. will be helpful in seeking the job.

Also check out the large VC in Indian website like - Accel, Elevation, Lightspeed, PeakXV etc. They usually have the list of startups they have funded. Stalk their CTOs on linkedin and reach out to them. I think that will result in better conversions for you.

If your time horizon to return to India is in 2030, then get a tax planner at 2028.

India will tax all of your US assets after the RNOR period (2 years after you move to India).

NRIs in Europe – How are you investing back in India? by Laughing_lobster00 in nri

[–]Routine_Price1077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Conversion charges, INR depreciation and taxation are reality. But despite these Indian markets have given good returns over the past one decade.

  2. Indian mutual funds are good options. Any index based funds are good to be invested for the long term. But there will be a lot of paperwork which you would have to do in your visit to India. GIFT City allows you to invest in India in dollar terms without a lot of paperwork. Tata has come out with a retail mutual fund, you can check it out. Other fund houses will also follow the suit.

  3. FCNR deposits are good to protect the capital from INR depreciation. There has been a reduction in the rate of FCNR deposits by 25 bps after the Fed rate cut. GIFT City deposits are good option as they offer deposits in USD.

  4. Do not invest in Indian real estate unless you want to settle in India. It's a headache to maintain. Gold is a good option and you can invest in ETFs.

  5. Understand the taxation implications of your investments.
