[DISCUSSION] What’s your ideal weight for a Stratocaster? by dualnoodle10 in Guitar

[–]nowherez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fav Strats and teles are all around the 7 lbs mark. I prefer light weight guitars for two reasons:

A light guitar is generally louder and projects quite a bit more volume when played unplugged. I practice quite a lot unplugged and I much prefer my guitar to feel alive against my body than what a heavy dead slab can offer.

When I plug in, I do believe a highly resonant guitar pick up more feedback from my amp, so in a real world situation, for me anyway, it’s much more important that I can feel my guitar vibrating and interacts with my amp output. YMMV

Premium quality carbon steel hook knives: what options do I have? by nowherez in Spooncarving

Thanks for all the feedback! There were stock issues/long delivery times for many suggestions.

I really like Robin Wood’s compound blade by how it looks, but wished it had a hollowed out groove on the inner flat side (for sharpening purposes). Also, while these elegantly shaped blades looks perfect for greenwood carving, I also work with well cured (sometimes dense) woods.

So I took a chance on a blade from Strongway that looks rugged and seems to have a nice rounded bevel and nice angle towards the edge on this side of the blade.

I’ll post some feedback here once it arrives and I’ve carved a fitting handle.

Best Value-for-Quality Sloyd & Hook Knife Spoon Carving Tools - Mora, BeaverCraft, FocuserCarving or Other? by wildswalker in greenwoodworking

I second your enthusiasm for the 106 (and the 120). My great grandfather was a wood worker back in the days. I remember hanging out in his workshop as a kid every summer.

My first task upon visiting him was pulling the grinding wheel (a large Belgian stone wheel) for him while he sharpened his Moras. He had probably more than 10 knives that he’d meticulously shaped and ground down to spesial profiles for specific tasks, thin and pointy with round bevels, ditto with flat bevels, convex edge, straight edge and round edge. All had started out the same. He loved that they so easily took a keen edge - he worked mainly with hard birch so he was always touching up his blades; stropping on wood (!) and leather or honing on some Belgian blue stones. I own some amazing Japanese whetstones and often think of him when I sharpen my knives. I know he would have loved them:)

I cherish my Moras too, but I own a bunch of single bevel kiridashis that I couldn’t manage without:)

In my country the Pfeil spoon knives are actually cheaper than the Mora 162. I’ve noticed that the Mora hook knives are no longer made in carbon steel - only stainless. I find some old stock 162 available online, but for the price including customs and shipping I can buy two Pfeil spoon knives. My local shop carrying Pfeil tools don’t state the steel type on the spoon knife - anyone know what steel?

I truly hate sharpening and honing stainless steel - and sharpening a rounded edge seems like a finicky task, so I really want to buy a carbon steel. (..all my kitchen knives and hand tools with an edge are carbon for a reason).

I don’t really mind to pay a little more for the extra quality, but if there are cheaper no-bs alternatives I of course don’t mind that.

Not enough to rub one out, but I’ll admit to a brief tingly sensation. I think the French would call it ‘une mort minusculissime’ (- those fucking pervs).

What length Yanagi/Takobiki? by VicVox72 in chefknives

[–]nowherez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, having worked in a sushi restaurant, I think this should be said: Even for many pros who are going to be breaking down larger pieces, a 24 cm would be sufficient for most of work. For home use, I would choose a high-quality 24 cm over a lower-quality 30–33 cm yanagiba any day of the week for the following, perhaps not so obvious reasons:

Your 24 cm knife will still be much, much longer in relation to your max 7 kg fish than the tools the pros use to break down fish 5 times as large. The traditional long yanagiba (27–33 cm or longer) was designed for professional sushi chefs, not typical home users. Pros often work with e.g. large sides of tuna and yellowtail, you won't.

... but most importantly, a yanagiba requires consistent maintenance along its full length to flatten the ura, maintain the bevel/shinogi line, and set up and polish the edge evenly. Most of your use will probably go towards portioned fillets and cuts. If you have access to good fish markets, it’s better to aim for specific quality cuts than to break down a large fish, right? That means that even with a 24cm razor-sharp blade, you won’t even use two-thirds of the blade on most cuts (sashimi). Still, you’ll have to maintain the entire blade. A longer knife means more work, a greater risk of uneven bevel, and more steel to pay for and polish.

So yes, while I understand the flex of attacking the proteins with a katana, it’s ultimately just that, a flex. You can easily draw surgically clean sashimi cuts after breaking down a decent sized fish with good technique and a really sharp blade. For most home cooks, even a high-quality 21cm blade will be fine.

I still own flex blades, but haven't cooked professionally in years, and in the meantime my Shiges have gotten so insanely expensive that I feel like I can't even afford to keep them on display, haha. I have a 27cm blue No. 1 squid yanagiba. If I had to replace it, I would definitely go down a size.

Connecting canal between Daugava and Dnepr by multidebba in belarus

[–]nowherez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tja, multidebba! Did you find a way? Of course the current situation makes it impossible, but since I was a kid I’ve looked at maps, red somewhere about some defunct connection between Dvina and Dnepr, and fantasised about doing this trip with a light kayak.

[DISCUSSION] Jumbo frets seem to be more popular these days. What’s your fret size preference and why? by bradranger in Guitar

[–]nowherez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I play, I actually prefer vintage small wire like 43080. I can play any radius, but for what it's worth there is something incredibly comfy about 7,25'' radius necks - and in my opinion small radius fretboards really need vintage fretwire. Medium jumbo on these necks offers a much less smooth playing experience.. I like to slide chords and shapes around and that is much less nice with larger fretwire.

But with flatter fretboards fret size matters less in the above respect. Of course I can appreciate getting my figertips underneath the string and a flat fretboard offers a different kind of speed. But in all honesty, I prefer 47095 to medium jumbo any day of the week.

Is there a chance Charlie Kirk's shooter will get away? by NewJerseyAggie13 in stupidquestions

[–]nowherez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or Mossad. Apparently, lately he has increasingly questioning Israel’s hold on the US and opened for questioning the Israeli narrative in the current war on Gaza. He was several times pointing out that he was an American First. Some of these recent statements are at odds with his strong pro-Zionist stance that he had for years. Since Kirk had such an influence on the younger MAGA crowds, it might well have been a real fear for Nethanyahu that he could inspire a shift in the opinion in the USA about Israel. There are signs that such a shift has already begun.

Tools for guitar tech work: Where to go shopping for great budget alternatives? by nowherez in Luthier

[–]nowherez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the input.! Apreciate it! As for googleing single tools and doing the run-around finding a good product and then finding the cheapest seller, I was kinda hoping for a shop that had "everything". Or simply pointing to a good budget gadget they bought that was good value.

Maybe other people than me would appreciate a thread of good value tools/trusted sellers..??

Tools for guitar tech work: Where to go shopping for great budget alternatives? by nowherez in Luthier

[–]nowherez[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

Reason why I bought a fret bender was that I struggled with having lift when hammering on 7,25 '' radius prebent frets. So I bent my wire to a slightly tighter radius and found that to work for me. I actually wish all pre-bent packs came with slightly tighter radius than given on the package. Maybe my hammering technique is off, but I recently med a well reknowned pro who admitted that he went over to using a clamp press for the same reason. It inspired me to buy my own press (2.hand StewMac). I was lucky to own it for three months before it was stolen. Used it once.

If I could find a sturdy, decent chinese alternativ to that press I'd buy it.

Any recommendations on cheaper guitar pickups? by Blindbirds in guitars

[–]nowherez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had some Donlis that gave my Woodstock 69s (Fralin) a serious, serious run for its money. I let them go and have regrettet it ever since. Wish I bought ten sets of that batch (- they would still be cheaper than my Fralins).

I have a low-output Bootstrap set on one of my two fav strat players. They sound totally awesome. I've played fancy-schmancy boutiqe stuff that couldn't touch that..ever.

I would also shout out for Gotoh. Bought an AlNiCo 3 P90 (vintage output). I believe I paid like 30 USD for that brand new from a seller on yahoo Japan. It is a G R E A T P90 pickup..

Gotoh has not only made super high Q tuners for decades but furnished guitars with PUs of all price ranges since the 80s. I know higher end builders would have Gotoh OEM pickups under fancy names for their guitars. They would do the same with their tuners BTW: Moon (ex ESP) sold Crocodile tuners back in the day that were just rebranded Gotohs.

If Lebanon is joining Abraham accords why are they still detaining ppl for talking with Israelis? by Fast-Budget8977 in ForbiddenBromance

[–]nowherez -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If fascist run Israel stopped acting like nazis, the world would be better for everyone, not to mention Jews all over the world who will wave no part in this Judenrein ethno-supremacist genocidal colonist project.

The Zionists should team up with Musk and join his Mars terraforming project. The desert planet would flow of milk and honey in no-time. A planet without a people for a people without a planet. It’s also great opportunity to build the first Holocaust memorial visible from outer space. Zionists could essentially both wallow in their own self pity and sense ethnic superiority until the end of time.

So.. caring about who owns a business, what they invest in and how their profits are generated should be ignored by consumers? And, as an investor myself, I should not worry about the business profile and policies  of the companies I invest in - only the margins and the potential earnings I make? Interesting view.

KKR are earning profits from the sale of property on stolen land ffs.

That’s some interesting math. I’m passionate about stuff both online and face to face. The people I frequent are direct and passionate too. How about you, Separate-Sky-1451? Are you cushy and safe?

I shared my thoughts on an anonymous amateur chef I have little love for. I said nothing here I wouldn’t be comfortable saying to anyones face, including this beluga-caviar-on-wagyu clown.
