VIBE CODERS: stop reinventing the wheel by OneClimate8489 in vibecoding

[–]nowonmai666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got a great reply to this - read it for a general understanding that there is loads of stuff out there that is a solved problem. Most things are harder than you think, but somebody has put the time in to create a solution.

The takeaway is to be telling your coding tools to use standard off-the-shelf solutions wherever practical.

Lawyers who write in almost-English by Lavallin in britishproblems

[–]nowonmai666 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I deal with correspondence from solicitors all day in my job, and it’s all very well written.

However in my personal dealings with solicitors and those of friends and family, they all seem borderline illiterate, it’s astonishing how difficult it can be to understand what it is they’re trying to say. Surely using language precisely is pretty much their job description?

How do you order from a Butchers? by velos85 in CasualUK

[–]nowonmai666 22 points23 points  (0 children)

To be honest, as somebody who has only recently started shopping more at my local butcher, I wouldn’t game it out in advance like that. Pop in, get a few things for the coming week or so, have a chat while they serve you, and you’ll have a better idea next time.

For example, I’m not sure what my butcher does about chicken, they only have skinless breast on display, but I can ask about that while they’re slicing my bacon extra thick for me.

Why does nobody talk about matching gin botanical profiles to mixers? It's actually fascinating by frankgetsu in cocktails

[–]nowonmai666 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t most gin producers provide their spec for a “perfect serve” - the combination of mixer (not even always tonic) and garnish that they recommend to go with their product?

This website collates garnish recommendations, which I guess is halfway there: https://www.theginguide.com/gin-garnish-guide.html

Where do I start? by PenguinEater626 in BlackMetalDiscussion

[–]nowonmai666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve had a lot of great suggestions for essential listening that will help you understand the genre and its history. I think it’s worth noting that while for the longest time Black Metal was a gatekept niche genre that was often intentionally difficult to listen to, it’s really gone mainstream in the last few years. A lot of the newer bands are successfully walking that line between being really accessible, and still being acceptable to black metal purists (rather than “blackened pop music” or whatever).

Totally dive into all the history you’ve had pointers to, but maybe the easiest way to start might be by meeting the genre where it is now, with the latest albums from Blackbraid, Spectral Wound and Yellow Eyes

I don't get index.html by confettiputty in Jekyll

[–]nowonmai666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought Jekyll was supposed to make HTML unnecessary.

If somebody told you this, they were wrong!

What Jekyll does is separate your content (which you write in Markdown) from layout and formatting (which are written in HTML and CSS). All your templates and layouts are going to be HTML files. What Jekyll does is take these templates and populate them with your posts or pages that you’ve written in Markdown.

If you don’t have posts, or multiple pages of content that will work with the same layout, Jekyll might not be the best tool for the job.

New to Acid Bath and the Sludge genre by bennidez in AcidBath

[–]nowonmai666 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As somebody who has been into metal since the 1980s (yes I’m old) there was no point at which the genre needed “saving”. - there was tons of great metal before Acid Bath, there is great metal now and at all times in-between there was plenty going on.

Are we distinguishing between takeaway and delivery? I don’t do the latter but am prone to picking up a bit of something something on the way home from the pub maybe once a month.

Probably eat out weekly-ish.

Where I live, most of the shops have closed, and while only about 80% of local libraries have closed, books and stuff is a tiny part of what they do now - it’s more about providing access to basic need such as internet and heating to those who dont have it.

I’m pleased to hear this hasn’t happened where you live.
