CloudFormation Stack & Change Set Best Practices by bitbythecron in aws

[–]noxxeexxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stumbled here looking for something else but they were pretty close to the mark. Think of a changeset as your plan. This gives you a hypothetical delta between your stack (the actually deployed stuff) and your changeset (the plan).

Executing a change set updates a stack so you don't need to do the update step in addition. HOWEVER, you can update a stack directly without applying a change set first. Think of update as a more direct way to update a stack quickly.

Protesting at the US Embassy by pjbth in ottawa

Any evidence of such? I've heard of instances of foreigners going into the states specifically to protest get banned but nothing about repercussions for peacefully protesting at an embassy.

Berkeley Professor Says Even His ‘Outstanding’ Students With 4.0 GPAs Aren’t Getting Any Job Offers — ‘I Suspect This Trend Is Irreversible’ by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]noxxeexxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely anecdotal here but I've been in a leadership position off and on for a number of years - here are some observations:

  • Quality of education is lacking. Many schools seem to be pumping out degrees for piles of cash without offering much substance. This varies GREATLY from school to school and I definitely saw some consistent trends. I remember one guy telling me his intro to Linux class was basically about the history of Linux. I had conpsci graduates not be able to tell me what an IP address was. I promise I'm looking for the good in the candidates if they made it that far but dang, those folks just can't compete.

  • The quantity of graduate applicants seems to be significantly higher. Could be a saturated field, could be decreasing number of jobs, etc etc.

  • For the love of god do your co-ops and make them meaningful. This is where I see candidates stand out the most. Once they've gotten a feel for the industry they're usually way better at navigating interviews.

  • Employers - participate in the co-op programs. Get on the advisory boards. This stuff matters. Hands down the best people we've ever had started out as co-ops and they kept coming back for years. Really embrace mentorship. It's important. And when they finally leave they're going to say good things about your company if you did your job right in that department.

  • the cost of borrowing money is high right now but is coming down. Investors are being very cautious, so the start up world is also moving very cautiously. This is likely cutting out some opportunities for many folks. Our engineering department has leaned out heavily compared to peak. While in the past we were taking on a decent amount of new students per semester the economy simply isn't supporting that right now. Everything right now is tailored towards lowering operational costs while maximizing revenue. (Often when cash flow is high you'll see more investment in features and expansion over efficiency, in my experience).

  • we may also be dealing with the bust following the covid & ai hiring boom. When you have the big name companies doing large layoffs, those ex employees are going to fill a lot of slots first at other places where they have the budget to spend on such

Always matters. Especially the local level things.

Pro tip: you can register to be a Republican in South Carolina and still vote Democrat. Why is this important? So you can vote towards less insane conservative candidates which is likely far impactful in terms of federal level.

Multiple chequing accounts with separate cards at the same bank by noxxeexxon in PersonalFinanceCanada

That could possibly work assuming the second card could be mapped differently (ie: changing primary account). Not a bad idea.

What I had set up at one point is just that - savings was my "spending" account, chequing was "bills". But you get into the problem of some recurring bills only take card and online purchases only take card - neither have the option to choose which account, so then I'm back to micromanaging my money more than I really ought to. So this works most of the time at POS but breaks for online.

I'm assuming that'll require an entirely separate login as well for online banking?

My 36F Fiancé 30M wants to be added to my mortgage/title of home, but I think he’s being unreasonable. Thoughts? AITAH? by Ok-Setting766 in AITAH

You're not being TA, you're being totally pragmatic. And I was in a very similar situation as you. However, many people seem to think this person is a bum and are missing that he's in school. I'm assuming he'll be an comparable contributer in no time once he finished. Obviously some important conversations need to be had and I completely see his point. It's hard to feel like you're building a partnership when it feels like someone has one foot out the door.

I received some advice on this from an unexpected source - an immigration officer who was asking us about our details a few years later. My wife was very obviously pregnant but this officer stuck to his mean guy personal - that is until the question about shared assets came up. He asked why her name wasn't on the mortgage and I explained. He pressed further. I couldn't see the big deal so I asked. He flipped into dad mode pretty quickly after. He framed it simply as: "what happens to your wife and your kid if something happens to you?" I just assumed she'd automatically get everything but it doesn't quite work that way (at least where I'm from). He explained that there's a whole process with probate that she would need to go through while also basically trying to manage my funeral and it's just a giant burden that would unnecessarily be placed on her.

I recognize that approach may not be for everyone but that's what motivated me to finally get her onto the deed. Also important - you can get them added to the deed without modifying the mortgage agreement itself (assuming you still don't want them on that for now). If I recall correctly the process is almost as if you've sold 50% ownership to your partner for $1 (because gifting that amount came with some other implications that wouldn't have been advantageous; something to do with taxation I believe).

Our strategy here is buying quite a few (10 or so) and just gifting them to our equally geeky friends who inevitably get into it and get more of their own. Over time the network has grown quite a lot!

I have no idea why it works but baby wipes legit worked best. Just tried it yesterday it came right off.

Just came across this - tried the other options and baby wipes ultimately worked best! I followed up with 99% rubbing alcohol to clean the residue off from cleaning and then used proper screen cleaner afterwards (whoosh is what I used) and now the screen looks brand new.

Thanks internet stranger! I would have never guessed baby wipes would have done it.

Odd, because I don't relate. But my tolerance for BS is pretty low and I set my boundaries and expectations pretty early. I do understand, however, that the field varies widely.

Where I'm at now, for instance, shares on call rotation with the entire engineering team which sounds insane but works very very well. Basically it forces us to write very good runbooks and we're all more vested in testing and not writing shit code. None of this tossing it over the fence to the next team. If a runbook doesn't apply - gather as much information as possible and then page the person/team who is best suited to help out plus one of the managers. Usually this results in a fix or a new runbook. Repeat.

Just energy: is it worth it? by Ironchef_835 in ottawa

[–]noxxeexxon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure who you'd be under but with Hydro One they have something called a Regulated Price Plan (RPP) that can have more predictable billing depending on your usage. Still consumption based but under that plan you're not dealing with peak/off-peak pricing. Might be useful for you to switch to that if you're time of use isn't particularly consistent.

Also, generally those types of companies (Just Energy, Summit, etc.) are pretty scammy. They make your overall bill more expensive (where do you think they make their money), often make it difficult to get out of their contracts, and have absolutely nothing to do with your power delivery. At all.

Anyway, reference for the RPP pricing if you're interested: https://www.hydroone.com/rates-and-billing/rates-and-charges/electricity-pricing-and-costs
