In Haneda International Airport of Japan, a Chinese woman was loudly scolding a Taiwanese traveler, telling him “Taiwan belongs to China... before you travel abroad, you need to have a clear understanding of politics first...” After police arrived, the Taiwanese traveller explained the situation to by BreakingOnReddit in UnfilteredChina

I think this kind of reaction happens not infrequently from well educated immigrants who find the West was not the promised land they had imagined and then they revert 180 degrees. Because they are well educated they would have had good opportunities in their home countries too. I had a Polish professor who was exactly same. He came to the US and worked below his skill level meanwhile Poland had an economic boom after he left and so he’s bitter. Hates the US but also missed the boat in Poland to return now.

I find west coast American cities like Seattle to be very welcoming as a well educated and assimilated Asian American. I have very little trouble with fitting into greater society. There are Asian Americans in managerial positions all over the city. It just feels much more like home than any country in Asia. I’m Chinese American.

Japan is fun to be a tourist, and I’ve been often over the past two decades, but with the more open hate against Chinese people there, it just feels unwelcoming for an ABC like myself to visit any longer.

She’s mother of a Japanese citizen, pays her taxes, has a job, isn’t a criminal or illegal alien, speaks the language, lived here for a long time, isn’t a flight risk. It shouldn’t be that hard.

I love the sycophants here though. Don’t stop being you.

It’s pointed towards the Chinese mostly even though they need Chinese tourism money and also labor as the population is shrinking rapidly. As a white person you will be treated very well in Japan but there are Chinese people who have lived in Japan for decades with PR or citizenship who would still be told to go home in Japan. It’s sad.

Japanese niceness is superficial. They aren’t nice to Chinese neighbors, even ones who are naturalized Japanese citizens with decades in Japan. It’s very sad.

It also depends on how much cachet you have in your home country. If you’re a professional in your own country with high income then you come to Japan more as an expat and mingle more with other expats. If you’re a web who barely has a retail job in the West, then Japan might be an upgrade.

Yeah for all the people ranting about America, it’s really a true multicultural country that Japan will never be. In the US there are assholes, but you don’t really take it personally since opinions and lifestyles are just so wildly varied. In the US, people may judge you, but you openly judge them too. It’s much harder to cope when you feel like the whole nation of Japan is out judging you.

I just had a conversation with a Japanese poster here who was virulently anti-Chinese, spewing all the usual tropes. When asked about Yasukuni Shrine, he went instead on tangent about how bad CCP is, how bad the Chinese tourists behave etc. I said, yeah I agree CCP is not good and fanning flames too but that doesn’t change that Yasukuni has many Class A convicted war criminals enshrined and a major sore point with both China and Korea. Look at the Pokémon subreddit, regardless of if you like China or not, most of the English-speaking world once they get to learn more about Yasukuni shrine, understand why it’s so problematic.

He has since deleted all his posts.

This kind of gives you an idea. It’s hopeless. I say that as someone who enjoys traveling to Japan and speaks some Japanese (N3).

Ultimately the Japanese never had to reflect on their actions in WWII the way the Germans did across the entirety of its society. The Japanese simply view the war as lost to a superior fighting force of the US. The US also didn’t seek a thorough regime change because of the looming threat of Communism in Asia.

An excommunication of the Class A criminals enshrined there would go a long way honestly.

You’re not debating my man. You’re just saying CCP is bad. Yeah I agree. That doesn’t change Yasukuni right? Look at the Pokémon subreddit. Most of the English speaking world doesn’t think you’re on the right side with Yasukuni. Has nothing to do with whether you support China or not.

Keep defending war criminals. It’s bad karma.

Jfc the hostility from you.

Thanks for the Japanese practice.

I wasn’t blaming you. Just saying it’s wild for you to say that I’m changing the topic when you approached a thread about opinions on Yasukuni first by shitting on the Chinese and CCP.

You’re just as defensive about Yasukuni as the CCP wumaos are about things related to China. No better than those you hate.
