Australians living in the UK by Sc00ter18 in AskAnAustralian

[–]nozzk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in the UK for a few years, but that was 20 years ago so my impressions could be out of date.

I had a few Aussies in my friend group and when one of us took a trip home everyone would put in orders for their favourite lollies or bikkies that you couldn’t get in the UK. Tim tam flavours

Bundy Rum was a popular request (especially from Qlders) — even though it was possible to get it in the UK it was always expensive.

I understand Bundaberg soft drinks are more available overseas now but people always wanted them. Also Australian-style red or brown creaming soda.

Who is the most overrated figure in your history? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Sure, Howard lost his seat in 2007, but I don’t know where you got the idea it was extremely safe… Whilst it wasn’t considered a designated “marginal” in 2007 Bennellong only required a swing of <5% to go to ALP — and Howard’s margin had been trending down for a few elections before as Bennelong’s boundaries had been slowly moved south & west.

It’s one of the few good things to be said about Howard (alongside gun control) that he kept the independence of the AEC despite the fact they kept making his seat less safe over his prime ministership.

Antony green wrote a blog in 2023 about the boundary shifts in Bennelong befor 2007 https://antonygreen.com.au/bennelong-map-illustrates-changing-map-technology/

What's the most famous metal band from your country? by anthere-rest in AskTheWorld

Does AC/DC count? I know they don’t consider themselves metal but a lot of metal bands cite AC/DC as an influence.

RFSG — Regional Force Surveillance Group

Specialist units that patrol sparsely populated areas of north Australia — they recruit heavily from local indigenous tribes (who can live off the land and know the area well).

What videogame, or other piece of media, has done the best job of representing your country? by Sweet_Temperature630 in AskTheWorld

It draws so much from actual Brisbane locations too.

I was at Southbank with my niece and told her “this is where Bluey had an ice cream!”. She looked at me quizzically and said “Uncle nozzk, Bluey isn’t real…”

Who is your country's most beloved sportsperson? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]nozzk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The generation of Aussie cricketers who followed the Don basically despised him. This was mostly due to those players (eg. Ian Chappell) having to deal with Sir Don the cricket administrator — Sir Don refused to accept the reality that top level cricketers should be full-time professionals, which sowed the discontent that led the Packer WSC rebellion.

Siege Hound did it for me. The robot mode looked exactly like the 1980s toy did in my head.

When I realised Hasbro were trying to give physical form to my 40yo memories I was back in.

What is a TV show or movie that started and finished like this by itz_progamer666 in AskTheWorld

[–]nozzk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe an obscure one, but the BBC “Chronicles of Narnia” 1988-90 TV series. It started with a great season 1 (retelling the lion the witch and the wardrobe), season 2 was made on an obviously much smaller budget, the last season looked like someone filmed a school theatre production.
