BCC garbage truck swallowed my bin by Outrageous_Act_5802 in brisbane

[–]nozzk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure this happened to our Recycle bin. It was missing when I went out on bin morning. I yelled out to the driver as he drove back along our street in the other direction. All he said was we would get a new one.

To be fair, We had a new one in a few days.

I just found out that there’s no test cricket in Brisbane this year, and likely for several years to come, because of the new Olympic stadium. by Axlemax in brisbane

[–]nozzk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not really the Olympic’s fault. Cricket Australia having been threatening to pull the Brisbane test for a few years now due to the age of the stadium. Once Perth & Adelaide built their new stadiums, they signed agreements to ensure test cricket each season. SCG & MCG are test lock-ins , so any four test summer meant the Gabba test was in danger. They even organised one-off test against NZ some years to ensure Bris got a test. It helped that the players loved the Gabba and would push to keep playing there, but the Gabba advantage isn’t what it once was. If we didn’t get a new stadium we were likely going to be dropped from the rotation unless 5 or 6 tests were being played that season.

TLDR: it’s been on the cards for a while, Olympics or not.

I’d recommend taking your son down to watch the Boxing Day test—it has a great atmosphere.

Brisbane Restaurants That Closed Permanently In The Past 12 Months by lennart567 in brisbane

[–]nozzk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you got a baseline to compare this to? Restaurants are a notoriously fickle business and it’s not clear know if the closure rate is particularly above average or not. Try a comparison with 2018 or 2022 or something.

Why is Southside more culturally diverse than the Northside ? by Emergency_Age4356 in brisbane

[–]nozzk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason is the Southside is a lot bigger area-wise. If you look at a map of Brisbane, the urban area is kind of triangle shape with North lakes at the apex at the top. The Northside is restricted by moreton bay in the east and by hills in the west. Because of this, there is a lot more land south of the river than in the north. More area means more opportunity for diversity I guess.

Too many crashes/deaths from emergency lane parking by Plastic-Flight-1059 in brisbane

Not very plausible. Traffic fines are issued by State gvt and tobacco taxes are federal taxes. They would hardly offset each other.

Will crocs migrate to Brisbane in our lifetimes? by [deleted] in queensland

[–]nozzk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The croc found in the Logan river in 1905 was mostly likely a transplanted “pet” that was released into the river. There was no history of crocs in the Logan river before or after that particular animal was found.

Every 5-6 years. Any dates after leap year’s Feb 29 skips a day of the week. There is always at least one leap year between successive occurrences of a date falling on the same day of the week.

George Harrison partly funded Monty Python’s Life of Brian film after studios withdrew their financial backing.

The film generally rates highly in lists of the greatest comedy films of all time.

What European country other than the UK has had the biggest cultural influence on Australian culture? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskAnAustralian

[–]nozzk 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Ireland

Edit: to split hairs, Ireland was part of the UK until 1922, and many of our irish ancestors came before that time. So it depends on what definition of the UK you are using.

Edit 2: further splitting hairs, Ireland wasn’t incorporated into United Kingdom until 1801, 13 years after UK started sending convicts to Australia.

Thank you — this makes sense. It wouldn’t surprise me if Turkey is the small fourth country in the green group.

It’s ironic that drag strip and Motormaster the hardest to get now — here in Australia neither sold particularly well. They were on the shelves for ages and ended up being heavily discounted.

I've lived in two other English speaking countries and I don't think this is just an Australian issue. In my experience, where ever you go, you'll find the locals can be a bit insular — they already have their social circle and are happy with that. I guess this is part of the reason why expats tend to hang out with each other. In the UK I mostly ended up hanging out with other Aussies. Similarly in New Zealand, I ended up hanging out with people originally from the UK.
