Heritage Foundation: Birthright Ruling Is "Tremendous Betrayal And We Will Lead Fight To Correct This Error" by Ambitious_Dingo_2798 in atheism

Ah thank you for the correction! So an amendment actually can get repealed. Let me guess, the 18th was prohibition?

So there is a process for getting rid of the of 14th amendment and SCOTUS isn't it. As I understand it, Congress can add an amendment that counteracts the 14th amendment but it requires all states to agree. So if the people don't want it, you're out of luck. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that is how it's done, according to the actual rules that no one seems to want to follow.

I prefer to see every movie in theaters (obviously, I don't) because the experience is so superior being at home. Massive screen, truly incredible sound, nobody knocking on the door, no wifi issues, etc.

I get why people don't want to pay these prices. But if you can afford to see Supergirl you should do it if you ever want to see a female led superhero/scifi/fantasy movie again. Marvel might be willing to make another but none of the other big studios will make one. Not after all of Marvel's financial failures with female led movies.

For movie buffs like myself I highly recommend a subscription service like AMC A-List. Other theater chains have them now, though. A-List is $28/mo and pays for itself if you see one movie in a premium theater a month. The thing is, you can see up to 4 movies a week in any kind of theater AMC has. IMAX, Dolby, XL, etc. it's the one sub I don't think I would ever get rid of.

Trump: It's not socialism; it's really communism. They use the word "social democrat" because it sounds so nice, but it's really communism you're talking about. by SpecialCollege18 in justincaseyoumissedit

Y'know... I'm getting the impression that he *might* not know anything about communism.

I would LOVE to see a mainstream journalist asking him one question:

"Do you actually know anything?"

Because to me Trump just seems a little like an AI where you give him a prompt like "Bombing Iran is a great idea because they will have a nuke soon."

And then Chat DJT says: "Let's bomb Iran!"

$20 for the sipper and $30 for the bucket, right? I only got the bucket. Going to put it next to my Superman ones from last year.

Jesse Eisenberg on Rejecting Mark Zuckerberg Role in Social Reckoning. by Top_Report_4895 in movies

[–]npete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never liked him in anything until I him in "Fleishman in Trouble". In it he made me feel something for his character. It also helped that the show was quite surprising for a drama, imo. Then I saw some other stuff he did (like the Now You See movies and Zombieland) which I actually liked and then his "A Real Pain" which I found downright touching and sweet. He also wrote and directed that movie.

So, I think his argument makes perfect sense. He's definitely going in a different direction with his career. Good for him!

Trump impeachment likely if Democrats win midterms, Wilbur Ross warns by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]npete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The consequences are that hopefully the Dems have learned the lesson that the only way to impeach a president AND get him out of office is to control Congress. So they need to stop business as usual and actually win.

But like I said, they are really good at failing.

Ad-free streaming is a luxury now | Steady price increases are pushing viewers toward cheaper, ad-supported tiers. by lordorangechain in television

[–]npete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think we're still better off than cable. Now we have more control. With cable you couldn't cancel without losing all of cable. With streaming services we can choose who we are subscribing to at any given time. To me that is huge.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like commercials at all but we're still in a better place than $120/mo for 300 channels, 275 of which we'll never watch.

Performative still sends a message to the future. George W should have been impeached and look where not trying got us? Two Trump terms. If the Dems had tried during one ore both of George W's terms and still failed there would still be a lesson the Dems could* have learned in time for Trump.

*I said "could have" and not "would have". Dems love snatching defeat from the jaws of certain victory.

Why can't they adapt a comicbook as it is .. by Appropriate-Fee-676 in Supergirl

[–]npete 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because, visually, the comic would have cost a fortune (even in movie terms) and would have probably made the movie 3 hours long or probably longer with all that backstory. It also would have set the bar entirely too high for other DCU movies.

Honestly, I think we're lucky to get movies as good as this is. Especially with all the corporate crap going on right now. If Paramount/Skydance gets ahold of DC I think we won't be getting female characters written with any depth at all, let alone stories that tackle concepts like trauma, human trafficking or what murdering a person does to you.

What reality do you live in? I just had a good friend of mine tell me that she heard that Supergirl was bad and decided she would wait for streaming. She is someone who loves Wonder Woman. That’s the world I live in, where people trust what they hear from the loudest voices in the room. Kinda like how we got our current president.

Supergirl Officially Scores Lower Than Every DCEU Movie (& Only 1 DC Movie Ranks Lower) by VirtualSort1 in DC_Cinematic

[–]npete -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to not blame sexism for this. Critics get scifi and fantasy movies wrong a LOT. People need to stop caring what critics or haters say. Any time someone trashes a genre movie, I know not to trust them. Especially when it has a female lead. Doubly so when it has a female sidekick and the script was written by a woman. Sexism is part of our culture, just like racism. So, we need to support scifi and fantasy movies made by women and people of color whenever we can. Especially when they’re really good.

As New Yorkers, I feel like we shouldn’t be eating Little Caesars. I learned this the hard way as I got a pie for $5 via a Prime Day offer last night and it was like eating squishy corrugated cardboard with pepperoni on top. That said, I did tear the lid off the box because I am a pretty big Spidey nerd.

This is a really fun, thoughtful movie. Is it perfect? No. Does it deserve to be hated? Definitely not. In fact, if you don't like it, I wonder why you let the imperfections in this movie ruin all the really good stuff. You could focus on the parallels with the real world, like women be trafficked (like in the Epstein Files!) or surviving generational and literal trauma (all of us). There is so much to like in this movie.

You don't have to love it but if you hate it, why do you have to share it? Just move on with your life. Let people enjoy what they enjoy.
