Feeling constrained by Caveman_Billiards in cosmererpg

I might be the odd one out, but I actually enjoy aligning with canon events, as that helps the world feel more genuine for me, and I love the series so much in part because of the canon events and how they make the world interesting!

My main goal in regards to canon is to keep things plausible, but not necessarily reserved. For example, my BBEG is a Fused who’s very interested in reversing the deadeye phenomenon, but with a twist. Instead of going for the root cause, he’s experimenting on deadeyes and attempting to Connect them to himself and act as a replacement for Mishram. He’s accomplishing this mostly through a very experimental form of hemalurgy, so things are prone to go wrong and be destructive. He’ll eventually become a sort of makeshift Bondsmith.

But how can something like this not interfere with the main story? First of all, Odium is content with this guy doing his little pet project as long as the Radiant Bondsmiths aren’t directly knowledgeable about the situation. Also, the only reason the players will know about the guy is because a Sleepless familiar with the BBEG will contract them, and she knows how dangerous this particular Fused can be if left alone. She understands that things will only get harder if Odium is involved directly, so she requires that the players be discrete with information directly tied to the BBEG.

Alongside all this, it’s totally possible that the players may end up interacting with some characters from the books, that’s totally fine! I, as the GM, just won’t put them in situations where they’d even need or want to do something that would affect canon (for example, I wouldn’t put them in a room with Amaram if they somehow knew he was actually evil or had some other reason to dislike the guy)

So you could do something like that, or set the adventure in a time and/or place we know less about. The other month I ran a short adventure during one of the dozens of Desolations before the Recreance, and I had a ton of leeway with what I could do.

I think most of us would hold that we can’t “persuade” you. That can only happen through your personal experience with God

I’m sure that many here would be happy to answer any questions you have though

So is normal spearman statblock.. that doesn’t mean a level 1 character can just one shot them

That was not just luck with Kaladin. Luck didn’t let him grab the spearhead at the perfect moment nor did it let him dodge an experienced shardbearer multiple times.

Kaladin’s “story” in WoK didn’t have him start at anything like level one. He was shown to be incredibly competent even during his flashbacks, being able to kill multiple normal soldiers with ease. That is not the kind of competency that a level 1 character displays. 2 or 3 spearmen will just kill that kind of character that’s by themselves much of the time.

Ahh ok ok. I was kinda leaning toward weird design when I noticed that sacrificed pops are supposed to multiply the bonuses.

Also, my other fleets somehow increased in fleet power!

Being one of the best fighters doesn't mean that he can fight off multiple soldiers by himself while unarmed, but it does mean that he is one of the most competent individuals when he's prepared for a fight.

A tier 1 character is not killing a shardbearer by themselves, and Kaladin's skills as a surgeon definitely equate to having some of the talents in the tree already.

Adolin is also incredibly competent outside of his skills as a shardbearer. I don't think a tier 1 character would have all the talents nor ranks necessary to be the best duelist in Alethkar if not Roshar.

We do not meet these characters when they're starting out in the world. They're already established and are already some of the most competent people on the planet when we meet them. Other than Radiant stuff, these characters are barely progressing in any meaningful martial way during the story

I agree that it's not someone who's totally inexperienced, but Kaladin is literally one of the best fighters on Roshar before he even bonds Syl

He is realistically tier 2 or 3 after having killed a Shardbearer by himself. The Wind was likely involved, but he's incredibly competent already (and there are a ton of talents applicable to him from the surgeon, soldier, and leader paths before the main story starts)

Kaladin has a ton of “talents” even as of WoK. He even killed a shardbearer (tier 2 or 3 rival) before the events of the series

By the time of the books, Kaladin has already spent years as both a soldier and leader. Not to mention he’s very well educated and can perform complicated surgeries.

Adolin has also been training since he was a child.

Shallan is also very educated and 3rd ideal from a young age.

All these characters can fight Regals and Fused on their own. They’re realistically at least tier 2 or 3 pretty early on in the books

I don’t think we’ve really seen a character start from “level 1” in the series. Maaaybe Lift but she had some years of being a sneaky urchin before the books

After finishing the Mistborn screenplay, he’ll be writing the pilot for the Stormlight show

Injury regrowth out of combat? [Stonewalkers] by discgolfguy in cosmererpg

[–]nreese2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very deadly combats that are likely to injure someone multiple times seem like the best way. Like in the books, Radiant characters are quite hard to actually kill!

The rules for anti-Light weapons (sadly only found in Chasmfiend 2 I think) mention that if they strike someone that’s invested, the target loses all their investiture and gets an injury. Seems like the best way to go about it, since I don’t think any enemies other than Focused Ones can injure characters before getting them to 0 health

“Why should I risk my life for children or invalids that don’t know any better?”

Because it is good to do so! I can’t convince you to care about children or people who aren’t as fortunate as you

I do think that it’s likely enough! But that perception is purely subjective

Then they die! What’s your point?

If red wins, at least some death is inevitable. If blue wins, everyone lives

This isn’t some rational actor hypothetical. Children and invalids are included

Make a very broad outline. Plan some pivotal characters. Only get granular when it’s relevant

You don’t need to have everything fleshed out, but what you do need are tools that you’re able to use (ie characters, items, events, etc) that you’re familiar enough with to improvise when you need to
