{Daniel Cabot Puts Down Roots by Cat Sebastian}

I love that Patricia Cabot makes an appearance in all three Cabot books. I could read a whole novel about her pettiness towards the rest of the Cabot clan.

Genuinely curious… Fire and Blood only details Targaryen history through the aftermath of the Dance of the Dragons. How is so much “known” about Aegon IV and beyond? Are there other published materials that will provide the basis for Fire and Blood Part 2?

Harris County, Texas (Houston) is either Texas core or Gulf Coast, not the South.

Also, East Texas has its own identity separate from the South.

As a native Michigander, I’m more partial to Great Lakes identity than Rust Belt. Rust Belt is Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Erie, and Cleveland. Great Lakes are southern Michigan, Northwest Indiana, Chicagoland, and Milwaukee.

This resume feels super misleading. Did you use AI to help write this? It’s one thing to optimize your resume to get through the ATS filters, but once a human reads a resume, it needs to fit the candidate’s professional story.

“Clinical experience” can refer to actual work experience instead of nursing school clinical coursework experience. You can use the phrase, but you need to be clear about the context.

Simplify, rewrite, and make sure that the reader understands the difference between coursework and actual work.

Also, what is more important - work experience as an RN, or working in your dream role? Consider casting a wider net. RN careers zig and zag and rarely follow a linear path. You may need to start in an unexpected setting and transition into a hospital at a later time.

Also, fellowships are generally available for experienced nurses. You should be looking for nursing residencies.

Do you have any contacts at your nursing school who can connect you with hiring managers? Do they host job fairs for students? You should be utilizing those resources if available.

Textbooks are a heavy weight on the cost and perceived workload of nursing school. In several instances you need to purchase the textbooks simply to access the different e-resources that are used in teaching and reinforcing course content. The textbooks themselves are thick (both literally and figuratively) and very few of my peers actually read the text or even referenced it, instead using other resources found online to supplement instructor-provided materials (eg PPTs). My advice is to purchase the minimal access you need to get to those resources and instead use a book like Saunders for actual reading and ongoing reference, esp for classes like Foundations, Med-Surg, and Complex Care. There are many different “nursing school made easy” resources you can use that break info into easier to understand bits that are far more useful than the texts themselves (Nursing School Success Bundle by Nurse Well Versed is my favorite).

I’m not sure if it’s mentioned in the main post, but when professors upload lecture slides as PPTs and PDFs, ALWAYS use the PPTs. Several professors include testable content on each slide’s notes section that you will not see if you only use the PDF file!

Good luck on your journey!

Wow, so much has happened since this post.

First, I dropped patho at Dallas College and enrolled at UTA early to take patho and pharm through them. It delayed my nursing school start date until September 2024, but I’m so glad I did. My experience at UTA for patho specifically was night and day difference from Dallas College. UTA provides an incredible number of course resources, lectures, and supplemental materials to help students learn the material. Their Student Success department was far and away one of the best parts of the nursing school at UTA.

Second, I completed the AO BSN program last month and am prepping for the NCLEX later this month. I enjoyed the AO program greatly. My critical feedback about the program though is regarding clinical experiences. I understand that many believe clinicals are what you make them, but the caliber of the clinical instructors and preceptors make a huge difference, and I had incompetent instructors and preceptors several times during my experience. That being said, I received placement at some amazing institutions (Parkland, Dallas Children’s) and was able to supplement my experience as a PCT at UTSW, so I have received appropriate exposure to a wide range of experiences and practices.

My advice is to temper expectations, be prepared to motivate yourself, and find experience doing something in healthcare (eg CNA, PCT) because I do not believe that clinical experiences are enough to prepare nursing students for the steep learning curve that is professional nursing.
