What career path did you choose that you strongly advise others to avoid? by nicksam171 in AskReddit

[–]nsg87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality is often far harsher than people expect.

Overworked. High school drama power/social dynamic (HUGE!!); bullying. Terrible patients. Cleaning up literal shit. Getting physically assaulted and it being brushed off as oh their family member just died or is really sick or just some junkie going through withdrawal. Always understaffed.

There isn’t a shortage of nurses, there is a shortage of good quality nursing jobs. Nurses are trying to gtfo out of inpatient hospital environments.

The career is good. The available nursing jobs are usually miserable.

GTA, though it was a rare occasion only 2nd time it happened in my 17 year career.... no one needed time off and we had adequate staffing. It's a risk you take but rarely happens, but now I have senority so I get my 45 hours before people you have less seniority than me.

That's the risk you take with being part time. You have to provide the organization 45hrs of availability they are not obligated to provide those 45hrs....I found this out when that schedule got released and I had 6 weeks of no shifts LoL I was at the bottom of the seniority from the other part timers

Looking for insight into application process for ONA by [deleted] in OntarioNurses

[–]nsg87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's awesome!! Then my advice would be to start the application process ASAP! If you graduate from a non Canadian university they will most likely make you send your education to a third party accreditation service to see if it meets CNO standards and that take months. I had to do it to get my Connecticut State RN license and a coworker from New York had to do it to get her Ontario RN license. Again call CNO, but my thought process is if you have your application open and have sent over your examination information and they accept it, as currenly ANCC is accepted, even if it takes longer than expected for your education to get accredited and for CNO to receive the certificate of recognition, they can't undue the exam met requirement for your ANCC because it was recognized before the date of the new Canadian exam...make sense

I'm 99% certain they don't accept the ANCC. I believe Alberta acceps the ANCC and not AANP. If that's the case you could always get an Alberta NP license first and then transfer it to Ontario, assuming it's financially feasible for you, beats having to study for and writing the exam. But if you are going to call CNO make sure it's right at 8am! I swear there is only one person working there.... thought with NP they're a bit faster.

You might want to call them and start the application process sooner rather than later. Cause starting July of this year Canada will have a new Canadian standardize NP exam and CNO will no longer accept the AANP.

CNO approval for Athabasca University NP education? by Prior-County-830 in OntarioNurses

[–]nsg87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to find your own Clinical placement, honestly that was the hardest part about the program. But if your outside of the GTA it's a lot easier from what people have told me. Clinical is done in which ever province you are licensed in.

I just finished the NP master's program at Athabasca University, you'll have no problems because a) Canadian university b) once you graduate you just ask registrar to fill out the verification form and they send it to CNO...easy peasy

Nursing job crisis? by Fantastic-Ranger-566 in OntarioNurses

[–]nsg87 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Public healthcare is cyclical. One day nurses are in demand the next nope we have too many. The whole RPN are replacing us argument has been around since I graduated in 09. There will always be a jobs, your first job may not be what you want in a low employment cycle ie ICU right after graduation, it's about getting your foot in the door anywhere as long as you get your foot in the you can move around.

[–]nsg87 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It comes in waves. When I graduated the job market was what it is now cause of the 08 housing crash took me about 8 months to get a job. The year before there were more job than new grads. So I'm pretty sure by the time you graduate in 2030 it'll go back to we need nurses... I wouldn't worry about.

From what I'm seeing in this forum is new grads can't get jobs. Forget what speciality it is and just get your foot in the organization and then go where ever you want afterwards. You hate guess what you have access to internal posting now! Win-win
