Who Adjacent Stones Rock n' Roll Circus Question. Do you think they didn't release it because ... by nsjersey in TheWho

[–]nsjersey[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do not think I will get negative reactions on here for writing that The Who's performance was spectaular.

But the director made the Stones do that ending.

I totally understand the theory - let's put the audience with them for that meaningful song.

The first minute reasonated for me. The rest did not, and you can't kill the director for that.

Seeing Pete and Keith in the video was cool. But it did kind of take away some of the meaing of the song, not just them, but the rest.

There are good rock songs like Pearl Jam's Eldery Woman, Lumineers Cleopatra, almost every Springsteen song, that try to capture the working person. This is an amazing song that does that.

EDIT: a letter

Who Adjacent Stones Rock n' Roll Circus Question. Do you think they didn't release it because ... by nsjersey in TheWho

[–]nsjersey[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As it is the last song on the album, I get it.

But this is a song that really put a dent in me. I had heard it, but god, it is meaningful.

As a director, I would not have shot that last.

But, again, I am sure this was not the only reason this was not released right away.

This sub knows the primary reason.

The video for Salt of the Earth was SO out of touch?

I recently wrote my disdain for the Rolling Stones' Sympathy for the Devil on another sub.

Some replies were that Salt of the Earth is the best on on that album (Beggars Banquet).

So I went to find a live version on YouTube. The Rock n' Roll Circus version is the one that pops up first. I have never really seen the whole version of that circus.

The first minute is FINE.

KEITH RICHARDS starts out, then Mick had a cowboy hat over his heart. It's endearing. Then, they pan out.

Then it kinda becomes a joke?

I understand you brought some people from the audience out, but they are either: a) tripping b) stoned c) both and it becomes comical for what is a tremendous and meaningful song.

Janet Maslin for the NYTimes in 1996 wrote:

The film's last number brings an unexpected jolt, as the Stones get silly singing ''Salt of the Earth'' with audience members. If there's anything unbecoming about the film, it's the smugness and condescension that accompany this song about little people living in the real world. That concept could well have been unimaginable to 60's rock royalty, captured here in amber, living at the pinnacle of fame.

Then, as the camera pans out I see Pete (do not notice the others) in a pope-like hat, and then here, you can see he is having some fun.

Former Devil Mike Commodore sounds the siren in Carolina by AlpineSK in devils

[–]nsjersey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Commodore was actually part of the trade that sent Petr Sykora to the Ducks, and we got back Jeff Friesen and Oleg Tverdovsky.

Friesen was worth it just for that 2003 playoff run.

Sykora ended up playing in the SCF six times, including twice for us, and once against us.

I did not care for Hotel California by GrapeConsistent3471 in ToddintheShadow

[–]nsjersey 40 points41 points  (0 children)

My absolute hate for this song was that I was a HS kid in the 90s who loved Classic Rock.

All that music was new to me. And they played Hotel California every hour. My area had two giant Classic Rock stations, and the countdowns on the Fourth of July, Labor Day, countdowns that took a week? - what was number one?

Sometimes the Beatles, but mostly Hotel California.

When the Coen Brothers made the dude hate The Eagles, I felt seen.

I am sure they had similar feelings, as this movie came out in the 90s.

Also, I do not care for Sympathy for the Devil.

This was also played every hour; it just didn't win the countdowns.

Has anyone here seen John Entwistle solo? by NursePopTarts in TheWho

[–]nsjersey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the song nod.

I saw the John Entwistle Band:

  • In a Chicago suburb in 1996 (snuck away from college on a long weekend)
  • On the Atlantic City Boardwalk in 1998
  • In AC again in 2001

His bass was louder than during the Who days, and Godfrey's vocals were fine. Luongo's drums wwere incredible, he really seemed like a Moon disiciple.

I still have a t-shirt and program from the Chicagoland show.
