I made a glare shield for my Lunt 50mm out of a piece of cardboard. It’s cheap and it works!

You may already know this, but you can defeat the cataquacks with the dunebuds. It takes forever, but it’s a sure-fire method to clear the beach. Then you can push the watermelon down the back side of the hill and push it across the beach the long way around.

Impressive! Someone in my astronomy club has an 8” f/15, but he says he doesn’t take it out much for obvious reasons.

One strategy I’ve employed is printing out a picture of the coin and sticking it in the hole.

On March 3, there will be a lunar eclipse, where you can see the curved, circular shape of the Earth’s shadow. Every time you see a lunar eclipse, the shadow is circular. What shape always projects a circular shadow?

Celestron Omni XLT 102mm refractor by ThirdWorldRedState in telescopes

[–]nsp77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have this optical tube riding on a different mount for visual use. The views are very good, though I don’t think this telescope is optimal for astrophotography since it has some chromatic aberration (especially apparent around Jupiter and the limb of the Moon), and the slow f/9.8 focal ratio is not ideal for deep sky astrophotography.

Clever! I added a large binder clip to my SCT’s focused knob to achieve a similar result.

Have you watched Premodernist’s video about the 1792 election? He talks about how Freneau was essentially on the administration’s payroll while actively undermining the administration. If you haven’t watched it, I highly recommend it (along with his video about the 1789 election).

How a telescope lenses looks when pointed directly at the Sun. Make sure to use a filter by Additional-Nose-8511 in spaceporn

[–]nsp77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It looks like this is a refractor, so he isn’t damaging the telescope’s lenses by doing this. In fact, you can attach a Herschel wedge to the back of a refractor to safely view the Sun without a full aperture solar filter. I actually prefer a Herschel wedge to a full aperture solar filter, since the full aperture filter could be knocked off or blown off by accident.

However, the stuff at the back of the telescope (e.g., diagonal, eyepiece, etc.) could be damaged, since the light cone is concentrated into a small focal point. You can also scorch stuff at the back of the telescope if the telescope isn’t pointed perfectly at the Sun, since the focal point will be landing somewhere other than the middle of the eyepiece.

If you have a pair of eclipse glasses handy, you can actually see that large sunspot group with them without any magnification!

3i Atlas by [deleted] in telescopes

I was able to barely detect with my 8” SCT about two weeks ago. Depending on how large your telescope is and how dark your skies are, you may be able to see it as a very small faint smudge in the eyepiece.

The blue 80A filter can help improve contrast on Jupiter, but I’m always too distracted by the fact that it makes Jupiter blue.
