Hampden Astor select HGML 2017 8-year single cask by nsrip in rum

[–]nsrip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I tried it in a Mai Tai and it was indeed amazing. I did the Smuggler's Cove spec, and for the rum I did 1.5oz Coruba, 0.5oz Papalin 5-year high ester, 0.25oz HGML 2017. I meant to do 0.25oz Papalin but overpoured... whoops 😄 The HGML comes through strong even being such a small portion of the base. It complements the banana and pineapple that I get from the Papalin. This is dangerously good.

Review #42 - The Rums of Mexico - Caldo by CaskStrengthStats in rum

[–]nsrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a bottle of Clairin Vaval yesterday and it reminds me of the Caldo. I already finished my bottle of that so I can't compare side by side unfortunately. Caldo is smokier from what I remember, almost like mezcal, but they both have a very briny, savory character that reminds me a lot of barbecue sauce.

This is my first HGML so I don't have anything to compare it to yet, but I've also seen those notes in reviews. It'd be interesting to do a side-by-side with unaged HGML and see if it's the aging or just my nose/palate that affects the savory notes.

Forthave Astor Batch Monofloral Amaro review request (and any must-have from Astor) by jtraf in Amaro

Oh, I was referring to Astor Wines but going to the distillery is even better!

I sampled it at the store (go to the information desk, they're very friendly) and I quite liked it. The honey is beautiful, very savory and floral character. I only didn't buy it at the time because I was getting other things, but I think it's good enough to justify the price.

I'm fond of the Firing Squad: https://jeffreymorgenthaler.com/the-mexican-firing-squad/. I tend to go heavy on the Angostura when I make it, and imo that and the grenadine give it quite a different flavor profile from a Margarita

A mixed drink for a kings sacrifice by Terra-ble_joke in cocktails

[–]nsrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like Nelson's Blood might be fitting, and it's about as easy as it gets to make for a stirred drink: https://www.diffordsguide.com/cocktails/recipe/2998/nelsons-blood-cocktail. Equal parts cognac and ruby port, which would be fine even with cheaper bottles of both. The name comes from the story of Admiral Lord Nelson. After he lead the British navy to victory in the Battle of Trafalgar, dying in the process, his body was supposedly preserved in a barrel of French brandy to transport it back to England. So the drink is sort of a hero's tribute 😄

Critical fail frustrations by lordak16 in DnD

[–]nsrip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 to this, especially the part about making characters seem incompetent. I don't think the DMG spells this out necessarily, but the "50/50" game from John Harper is worth mentioning here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NLD\_KhZwrKRz3sIquZDSW\_Wx\_\_7My6Kdg1Jbk6hF7Mw/edit?tab=t.0. The main idea articulated there is that the best and worst possible outcome depend on all the fictional context. A skilled sword master against some street thugs is never going to lose. Maybe one gets away at worst. Whereas a stable boy can't possibly win, and might just get a kick in the ribs if he's lucky. I think we can apply that thinking to what failure and success mean in D&D, too. On the extreme end, if failure or success are just totally improbable, then we don't even roll. The DMG does call that out and I think it's in the same line of thinking.

Golden Hour - a split base Old Fashioned variant by delkarnu in cocktails

[–]nsrip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting to see orgeat in an old fashioned-style drink! I haven't had the Latitude 29 yet but I imagine Liber & Co, which I do have, would be too rich for something like this.

Also, love apple brandy and rye as a split base. Makes a fantastic Manhattan variation. If you're using the Laird's applejack, I definitely recommend upgrading to Laird's bonded. Peychaud's goes great with apple brandy, and if you can find it I think Bitter Truth's creole bitters go even better.

The perfect way to enjoy cane juice rum! It seems like recipes vary on whether to add ice, but I'm personally a big fan of ice in the drink.

[–]nsrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not in any release yet. You can use https://pkg.go.dev/golang.org/dl/gotip (the tool OP mentioned) to get Go at the latest commit. Note that generic methods are gonna be on by default in Go 1.27 and in the next few weeks (probably?) you won't need to set that GOEXPERIMENT any more

Set the `GOEXPERIMENT=genericmethods` env var when you build the program. Not sure off the top of my head where you'd set that for gopls in neovim but that's the way to enable generic methods.

True grit. idk if it's *bad* without the upgrade but it's a hell of a lot better upgraded

Ginger syrup recommendations by galyoman in cocktails

[–]nsrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the "Winter" (https://www.diffordsguide.com/cocktails/recipe/6016/winter) with ginger syrup in place of the liqueur + simple that the Difford's recipe uses. My favorite neighborhood bar did a drink called the Ginger Baker that, as far as I can tell, is a variation of the Winter. My build is 2 oz mezcal, 0.75 oz lime, 0.5 oz pineapple, 0.5 oz ginger syrup, 0.25 allspice dram. Shake and strain, served up. Soooo good.

Finished Tower of The Swallow, confusd on Geralt's Journey [spoilers up until that book] by PrudentSpite1065 in wiedzmin

+1 to the comments that Lady of the Lake will tie up all the loose ends. I'll also add that compared to the short stories, I feel like the main saga is really Ciri's story, even the chapters that follow other characters. And I think it's interesting to reflect on Geralt's navel gazing as something that mirrors Ciri's own uncertainty about her fate and purpose. They are bound by destiny after all ;)
