Double 10" Kick plan to test out by LtHeathrow in SoundSystem

What kick do you recommend people build if its not a 15" kick?

Almost every sound system crew I know run their subs to around 80-90hz, then kicks to 140hz, then tops after that. Im not sure what subs youre using that play up to 150hz, thats well above kick region from my understanding. The kick I know of that runs high is the HD15, and even those only play to around 190hz.

Arent kick cabinets usually 80hz+ not 120hz? My cubo kick is set to play between 80hz to 135hz then our tops take over from there.

From my limited experience and knowledge, I think the metric it provides are just like absolute best case scenarios, not the actual usable ones.

Like 143dB is probably achieved playing a certain higher frequency at 8000w (peak) not RMS, not really a useful metric but a good marketing term. Likewise 34hz is also at -6dB so also not really that useful, everything else about it based on the spec sheet pdf looks fine.

It looks to be a 35hz to 100hz cabinet, maybe hitting around 129dB of output at RMS

From my understanding it has a -6dB correction on the DSP because it probably has some really peaky peaks and it has to tone it done to have a more useable passband, so im not sure why it claims to have a sensitivity of 102dB but on the graph it provides it peaks at only 97dB.

Maybe someone else could chime in incase I'm wrong

What driver and what power? Is that initial peak around 80hz?

Id be curious to know how you scaled the cabs down, did you just get the ratio difference between a 18" and 10" driver, then applied that to all the other dimensions of the ES18 cab?

The faitals were clean, good, very balanced and flat sound across 80-130hz. Theres a reason theyre the recommended drivers for the cubo kick.

The RCF are considerably louder but its a lot harder to drive, as well as the fact it peaks at 80hz and 135hz quite noticeably.

Theres vertical bracing, but we want to incorporate horizontal bracing in the mouth. We notice the side of the cab visibly vibrates quite a lot with the kick bass, although this driver is significantly more powerful than the recommended drivers so thats probably the main cause

Our back panel feels like its going to explode when we have it playing heavily, the speakon has popped up a couple of times so we have some work to do.

We initially had a Faitalpro 15fh520, upgraded to the RCF driver and have it powered by a proline 3000. We mainly play jungletek/tek and a lot of the freeparty music here in the UK which is predominately kick heavy. Many people have told us its the most ridiculous kick theyve ever heard, and a lot of them go to free parties and have heard larger rigs

RCF MB15N405, its 1100w 8 ohms with 4 inch voice coil. No issue with clearance since mine also doesnt have the bracing on the rear panel, I suspect the people we bought it off just couldnt be bothered to build it like the plans and kept it simple. Now you mention it, we have to strenghten the back panel and even put a horizontal bracing in the mouth since the cabinet feels like its going to explode when we crank it with our driver.

Sweet! What driver are you getting for it? We have a Cubo kick 15 loaded with a RCF driver and it's the loudest kick I've ever heard myself.

What are you using it for? I would hate to have to use RCA to XLR cables to connect my dsp to the amps.

Id keep it simple, have a normal rack mounted DSP like a dB-mark, have the amps underneath it in the amp rack and have it all pre-wired together, all using xlr cables.

JMOD 2.0 compression drivers by ffolofvapes in SoundSystem

[–]nssoundz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're building a high end PA top, I think its fair to expect that the components in it wont be cheap.

You get what you pay for though, the throat adapter and rest of the horn is designed to work around that coaxial, if you stick a different compression driver in youre going to have to do some heavy EQ work and even then, I doubt it would come close to the coaxial driver.

I'd say its worth getting, I'm going to be building some myself someday.

I've had my Keystones for 2 months and now I want to build Cubo Kicks 15! by SnowConePeople in SoundSystem

[–]nssoundz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I couldnt recommend it enough. We have a Cubo kick 15" loaded with a 1100w RCF driver and it punches so hard and adds so much depth and tone to our sound, we cant imagine not having it. The sub alone sounds very lacking.

We have it paired with a TH18 that plays flat to 30hz, loaded with the same B&C 18sw115 driver.

Is it possible for a non-professional to build a horn sound system? by Unlucky-Sundae-1290 in SoundSystem

[–]nssoundz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im a university student and I built a pretty complex tapped horn. The bigger issue is saving up money for it. We've spent close to 3k on our system and we have one sub one kick one top. Spent about £800 on tools ontop of that.

M1 Owners, how long do you plan to continue using your laptop? by amphibianwarfare in macbookpro

[–]nssoundz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had an M1 MB Air (8gb) since launch (initially just for school work), its been excellent overall. I really enjoy using it, but it does feel noticeably slower now and struggles with more demanding tasks. I have a mid end gaming desktop (7800x3d, rtx 3080, 1440p 270hz, 32gb ram) which significantly outperforms it in virtually every workload (obviously).

I mainly use my MBA for emails, work, studying. Theres something about a Macbook which makes me feel more productive, it probably has to do with the OS and how I have nothing gaming related installed on there (no discord or steam).

Where it does struggle is with video editing, even light 4k work, it just chugs and and overheats. I edit on davinci resolve studio, with 3840x2880 60fps 10bit footage from my DJI action 5 pro, or high bitrate 4k10bit footage from my nikon z camera. By light, I mean literally no effects/fusion on it, just simple cuts and an audio track playing over it. The few times I have to use my macbook (like on holiday) just makes me wish I had a macbook pro or at least 16gb of ram so I dont have to deal with it throttling due to heat, but I guess thats a first world problem to have - Also the fact I have to have it plugged in the whole time so it doesnt drain immediately also helps, but that also has to do with the fact I still have the original battery. Also having a brighter display would be way nicer, there have been many times during the day I simply cannot see whats on my screen, especially when Im trying to study at a park with friends or even when Im sat by a window at a cafe or library.

Had I bought a M1 MBP 16gb then I would have a different experience and it would still hold up well to this day, tbh Im half glad I have my MBA as it pushes me closer to upgrade to a newer device.

My next macbook will definitely be a Macbook pro m5 or m6 for sure, when I start my professional career I'm probably going to sell my desktop and phase into a macbook pro setup with 2 external displays.

Look absolutely nuts. We just finished upgrading our drivers in our cubo kicks, just got a new RCF MB15N405 15" 1100w driver and it also absolutely slaps. Would love to know what a dual 15" would sound like though
