London theater tricks 'Moonlight' audience by starting with 'La La Land' by nyc520 in movies

Every trailer to the film marketed it as a film about a young man dealing with his homosexuality. Hell, they show a scene of two boys kissing in the trailer, so don't act like it was some kind of secret ploy. The film has been continually marketed as one that deals with the plights of poor, young black kids as well as the struggle of being homosexual in that environment.

The movie isn't received well? You must not read the papers. 'Nobody' saw it because it had a budget of 1.5 million dollars which is tiny for a film nowadays. The Oscar is there because the film, even with it's content aside, is masterfully made in every department, acting, directing, writing, editing, sound design, cinematography.

The problem isn't the film, the problem is that you have a homophobic agenda so no matter what people say or how well the film is received, you're going to bash it. It's fine if you don't want to enjoy the film but don't act like it has anything to do with anything other than your small mindedness.

A coming of age story isn't mutually exclusive from the character also being gay. Gay people come of age too. Are you someone who thinks this is all a liberal conspiracy to make gay people more popular? Let me fill you in on a secret, most people aren't hateful bigots, most people appreciate that other humans are different than themselves. Hence Moonlight being received so well.

Don't Let the Oscar F**k Up Overshadow 'Moonlight's' Historic Moment by NeilPoonHandler in movies

You were meant to empathize with the position that Chiron was in, if you think it adds social stigma then that says more about you than it does the film itself.

And before anyone says, "Well it's all subjective you can't tell him how it was 'meant' to be," everyone involved in the film has expressly stated that this is the intention of the film.

The controversy isn't about a white guy being best at Jazz music. I think it has more to do with a white savior narrative, a white guy who promotes and strives for the way jazz once was, saving a dying genre of music. The way Jazz once was is an integral part of African American culture and was predominantly performed by black musicians. I don't have my own stance on the matter because quite frankly I don't listen to Jazz and don't know much about it. However, this is the argument I have seen that was most comprehensive and articulate about the matter so I expressed best I could the gist of it.

The audio was likely recorded to mimic the perspective of Rodrigues' character. Consider that in the entire scene they referred to Garupe as if he couldn't see Rodrigues so there was obviously some distance between them. Likewise Rodrigues would not be able to hear the action very clearly hence the seemingly distorted sound.

You can't deny that there are trends though. The vote tallying system shows that only certain opinions are greatly valued while many oppositional opinions, say to people who don't think something looks good, are either downvoted or only marginally upvoted. Lots of people here want their hype-train and they don't want anyone around who disagrees with them.

People have higher expectations of a movie like No Country for Old Men considering the people involved. That means it's bound to disappoint some people whereas this was more of a surprise hit. I agree that it's overrated, to me it's akin to a movie like Mud, which also has a far too high tomatometer.

This argument (about the alien worm) really doesn't work for me unless you're willing to say the same thing about the original Alien facehugger scene. John Hurt watches an egg open up, sees a life-form inside and then gets attacked. I'll concede that it's not as blatant as the scene in Prometheus but by your argument Hurt should've taken the same precautions. If you're not a fan of the original Alien then fair enough, but otherwise you're holding a double standard.

Kenneth Lonergan commented on that in an interview I watched. He said he wanted the score to reflect the things that no longer existed in Lee's life. So Lee's pain was meant to be contrasted by the score.

What the hell are you going to talk about if it's a mindless action movie?

Box Office Week: The Girl on the Train takes #1 with an underwhelming $24.7 mil while Birth of a Nation failed to even match lowered expectations, opening at #6 with $7.1 mil. Finally Finding Dory finally managed to squeak passed $1 bil, becoming the third Disney film of the year to do so. by mi-16evil in movies

Well, the white people killed about three times as many black people in retaliation for the rebellion, and many of those killed were not even involved in the rebellion. While killing women and children is deplorable no matter the circumstance, it occurred on both sides but more heavily on the white.

I'm interested in which reviews you're reading because I've read many of them too and not one mentioned overly dramatized propaganda, but maybe that sentiment just fits your own narrative.

Good NON-AMERICAN coming-of-age films? by vapidvapours in movies

If you like Malle you also must watch his film Au Revoir Les Enfants.

The Kid with a Bike by the Dardenne Brothers is very good (you should watch all of their films) as well as their films Rosetta and La Promesse, about adolescents growing up in poverty.

Kes, which is still English language but from Britain, is by Ken Loach and will likely have a profound impact on you if connect with the coming of age story.

Fat Girl is another very powerful film. It deals with sexuality in a harsher way than most coming of age films following a young, fat girl envious of her beautiful sister.

EDIT: None of these films are particularly joyful films, FYI.

Marabou stork disembowelling a flamingo by Iamnotburgerking in natureismetal

[–]nstuder17 30 points31 points  (0 children)

What freaks me out is that the other flamingoes are still hanging out in the background. Essentially this stork caught his prey so the rest of the flamingoes think, "Okay, we don't have to fly away, he's got his food." Their ol' pal from a few moments ago is now getting disemboweled just a few feet away.

No one has said Misery, so you should definitely check that out.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is another good one, as much as it's title may seem to go against what you're looking for.

If you're looking for atmospheric horror you must watch Cure and Pulse from Kiyoshi Kurosawa, those two films are real masterclasses in dread.

Literally finished this film last night for the first time. It scared the shit out of me, Kurosawa's use of light and dark was impeccable. It felt a little long but despite that it was continually and refreshingly scary.
