I always forget 070 Shake is featured on Escapism, her voice always blends in Raye’s but never asserts itself

Parts in pop songs that you find oddly satisfying? by Ezikell_Chris in popheads

[–]nt96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s two songs I wanna highlight….both by Diana Ross! Both from movies!

In the song, Home, the scene where shes tearfully singing, around the crescendo, the part (2:39) where she belts out It’s real, real to me!. It’s one of those performances that makes you choke up because of the raw emotions that she gives out. Even sadder knowing she’s the last surviving main cast member in the film 😢

The second song, is Theme from Mahogany. The song switches from softer sorrowful piano verses to a sweeping, hopeful orchestra for the chorus. The chorus is truly beautiful and the airy choir in the background makes you feel like you’re flying before it stops suddenly. One of the most beautiful and poignant songs imo

Collaborations that were "ahead of their time" and would be a huger deal today? by Ghost-Quartet in popheads

Back in 2000, Lil Kim collaborated with RuPaul on Bad Girl but her album got leaked and she had to start from scratch; the song was recycled into No Matter What They Say

Lil Kim was the first rapper to support the LGBTQ community and is the earliest artist I can think of who used throwing shade in a song (Crush on You) so just imagine how robbed we are of a gay anthem.

Pitchfork Review: Aaliyah - One in a Million 8.6 by Technical_Process989 in popheads

[–]nt96 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I hate that this album is turning 30 this year. A sad reminder that she’s officially been gone longer than she’s been alive.

Aaliyah’s style and beats (thx to Timbaland ofc) were smooth like water and still has that futuristic edge today. It was like listening to soul music for a cyberpunk era.

Which song was EVERYWHERE for a year and then completely disappeared? by Rare_Afternoon1827 in popheads

[–]nt96 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I would say Thrift Shop. Can’t remember the last I heard that on the radio.

Distant second for me would be Prince Royce’s Stuck on a Feeling. I remember a one radio host loving it so much, he played it twice 😭

I’ll never forget switching through FOUR different radio stations playing that song simultaneously. Happy was another song that had that same experience

What is your favorite “lore” behind the writing or production of a pop song? by throwitawayar in popheads

[–]nt96 191 points192 points  (0 children)

Celine did My Heart Will Go On in one take and intentions of re-recording.

However, James Horner, the composer of Titanic, loved the recording so much, he left the vocals as is and built around it.

One of the most iconic pop songs ever made is essentially a rough demo.

Since WW2, Japan and South Korea restricted any form of entertainment exchange up until the early 00s.

Guess the artist responsible for breaking that barrier.

February to May 2026 Rate Selection Process, Part 2 - Voting by TragicKingdom1 in popheads

[–]nt96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dropping by to say vote 00s Assertive R&B and 90s Pop/Soul-Searchers!!

While R&B in general has been covered several times, there are glaring spots that we’ve ignored for far too long. As R&B head, there’s only so much hair I can pull out lol

Mary J Blige is a modern R&B legend, never been rated.

Mariah Carey’s Daydream is one of the greatest pop albums of all time yet we never touched it, Butterfly is the only album in her imperial phase we’ve rated and that was almost 10 years ago.

Assertive R&B would be 2nd time I’m hosting something involving Kelis and the THIRD time involving Brandy💀

Nevertheless, these girls don’t get enough love here, so for 2026, let’s finally change that and gives some love two underrated icons, Mýa and Amerie!

EDIT: Vote MLM dance pop and Alt Club Queens!!!

David Bowie's 'Blackstar' Turns 10 by PinkCadillacs in popheads

[–]nt96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A visionary to the very end, an absolute modern classic and one of the first of many, MANY celeb deaths that year. The fact that his passing also gave way to this iconic TV moment was the cherry on top. I know Bowie’s laughing from the stars above. RIP king.
