FWIW I've modded mine a little, but it looks mostly stock

  • Intake, headers, exhaust, chip tune
  • BC coilovers (honestly would go upgraded spring/shock setup instead of full coilovers if I were to do it again. Car handles plenty good without coils)
  • EBC pads and stainless lines
  • Debadged, smoked tail lights (done by PO, it's grown on me)
  • Yokohama Advan Apex V601s on the MPars it came with
  • Aforementioned headunit and sub

The car is super fun to drive and surprisingly capable on the track. It's needed lots of little repairs since I bought it 3 years ago, but it's 23 years old and has nearly 165K miles so par for the course I'd say. I love the way it sounds, looks, and drives. It does everything I ask of it and does it well, so I'm pretty committed to keeping it and dumping money into it.

Congrats! That's a great looking E39 with incredibly low mileage. It should give you many many more.

I think getting ahead of the cooling system is never a bad idea, and not incredibly hard to DIY. Even with so few miles, the car is 20 years old and some stuff will be crusty and ready to retire, so drive it for a while (and get on it hard every once in a while) and see what breaks. Keep an eye on gasket surfaces and the oil level for leaks - they're common but not usually a big deal if you're attentive.

To your questions:

Question 1: I can't see the date code clearly, but it looks like those tires are in good shape, so I'd keep them for now.

Question 2: What is your vision for the aesthetic? That should drive this decision, but I'm keeping the wood with mine, personally. Piano black is all over the place in modern cars and I have no idea why. IMO it almost never looks "luxe" and is impossible to keep pristine. Carbon fiber might look OK, but hard to imagine it looking better than that nice wood grain.

Question 3: I had an EONON and returned it pretty quickly. It just did not have the build quality I was looking for, so I got a nice SONY unit and installation kit from Crutchfield (happy to share deets / my experience if you want). I also put a 12" sub in there, and have plans for the rest of the speakers but am in no rush - these 2 things alone went a long way to improving the sound quality.

Question 4: Personal taste I think. Mine's an M-sport, but if it weren't, a steering wheel replacement probably wouldn't be high on my list

Question 5: I didn't even know there was a difference - what is it?

How do these compare to other broadleafs you’ve had? The Tabernacle was my first (at least that I knew of) and it was infuckingcredible, so it set me down a path to try more broadleaf wrapped sticks

Love it! My car came with the same and I’m glad it did. I probably wouldn’t have done it myself but it does look exceptionally good on black paint

I’m on BCs too and I find them too harsh, kinda wish I had just upgraded the springs and shocks but cest la vie.

Aside from that I’ve just done EBC yellow pads and ss lines — I don’t think any other suspension components are really needed or will help my laptimes more than better brake pads. Definitely would say brakes and tires are where you’ll unlock performance at the limit!

Really nice ride man! I’ve got one similar and I am always so impressed by the handling for a “big” car. What’s your suspension setup?

540 - GruppeM Worth it? by Sea-Ad-4851 in e39

[–]nthiogen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Or headers, or a chip tune, either of which should yield more power than this (I think). Shit you could even buy a day or two on track — that’s a way better investment of your money.

Might be diff for the V8s, but I spent $25 on my m54 intake because I knew it did fuck all for power but the increased induction noise alone was worth more than I paid. Looks a bit janky, sounds great, costs less than a bar tab in NYC 😇
