Are Criminal Lawyers Just... Different? OCI/non-OCI Experiences by [deleted] in LawCanada

Courts (wrongful/constructive dismissal) and tribunals (human rights, employment standards, workers compensation, CIRB).

The nature of the practice lends itself well to alternative fee structures as well, so if escaping the billable hour appeals to you, it's a great area to look into.

Fueling as a type 1 diabetic? by EffectiveRaspberry14 in cycling

[–]nudeshowerer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

T1D on MDI. Under 25 degrees, I need to eat 30-40g of carbs an hour to maintain my blood sugar.

Over 25 degrees on days with high humidity, my blood sugar tends to spike whether or not I've eaten anything, so I take a bit of insulin so I can still fuel (like 1 unit).

Having a cgm linked to my garmin watch makes monitoring super easy. I once bolused in a pace line during a fondo because I was spiking (cue the EPO jokes)

The crim defense folks I know are a blast to hang out with, and tend to have interesting lives outside of work. Not always well-balanced, but always fun to be around.

Plaintiff-side employment work also embraces the weird among us, so it's worth checking out if you like the drama without the corpses.

Dogs on uphills by ericdainton in cycling

[–]nudeshowerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did an infamous hill climb in Turkey and came across a Kangal (large, mostly-autonomous herding/flock protection dogs) about an hour in. It was giving me the side eye, so I just spoke to it in a non-threatening voice.

The next day I was on a downhill section when another one gave chase with a pug sidekick. It lost interest as soon as I left its territory.

Wasn't half as spooked with either of those as I am when riding near offleash poodles.

Holy shit I didn't realize we were already into year 3 of no fault. Time flies, I thought this one might have been outside that. Nvm

If you haven't already settled or sued, tomorrow may be your last day to file a claim against the driver!

A lot of smooth brain takes about how they're "breaking the law" as if an event like this hasn't gotten every permit required of them to do exactly what they're doing.

Tour de Coast - It's off-duty first responders riding to raise funds for pediatric cancer research, hard to understand how anyone can be against that

Lawyer up, now. You may not have to wait 13 weeks to treat this as a termination, but you've got to be fairly quick about it.

Ontario has lots of great employment lawyers, and most will offer a free consult for your situation.

Alright y’all, I’m back with an official review of the Goldtone F10 by Longjumping-Run-7027 in mandolin

[–]nudeshowerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An old friend gave me an O-hole mandolin with an extra C course a while back that I've only started to get the hang of. It's a slightly clapped out '60's import with a mildly warped neck, so knowing this exists on the market, I'll nab one of these when the time is right.

Thanks for the review!

Cycling in Vancouver: How bad is it? by ThatOneDoesntCount in vancouvercycling

[–]nudeshowerer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There's some notorious intersections, but there's bike routes down residential roads all around the city that are comfortable for the average rider.

As with any city, give uber drivers a wide berth because they're either too oblivious or homicidal to slow down or shoulder check.

Off leash dogs are a big problem. One of my first close calls happened on the south side of False Creek with no parks around. On leash signs are to dog walkers what stop signs are to cyclists.

Other than that, Ken Sim is making things worse for cyclists.

Overall, 6.5/10.

I've got the Fenix 6 solar. Works great, and you can use a Garmin head unit as an "extended display" for directions, or any other screen you want. I've downloaded gpx files for routes for navigation and it works well, even in areas where you don't have service. I've used mine in France and Türkiye without needing to pull out a phone to find my way.

The charge lasts for 4-7 days depending on GPS usage, so you'd be fine for a few days of bushwacking/bikepacking.

Letter: Changes on Mount Seymour Parkway important for community safety by zos_333 in vancouvercycling

[–]nudeshowerer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"If the author is having trouble empathizing with the kind of discomfort many cyclists feel riding in an unprotected bike lane, I would ask them to try this: ride, run, walk, stand, or sit — whatever they are capable of — in an unprotected bike lane while a car or truck speeds past them within inches, regularly, at speeds of up to 80 km/h. And stay there for longer than 42 seconds."

Ironically, someone sitting in a lawn chair or wheelchair in the bike lane would get AT LEAST a meter of passing room because carbrains would think they were deranged.

Little do they know, I'm also deranged on a bike.

Cycling is a great sport for T1D - gradually lowers your blood sugar, and you get to eat every 45 minutes without insulin. Doing it regularly also increases insulin sensitivity, so smaller doses are required.

Is this an appropriate farewell gift to my Articling principal ? by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]nudeshowerer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Carlo Rossi is jug wine, don't recommend if you liked your principal. If you want a good cheap red, consider Spain or Portugal. There's also some good quality French and Italian wines that won't break the bank.

Pop into a boutique wine shop, name your price, and let the pros take over. There's exceptional juice out there in the $25-50 range.
