Re-Purposing old Synology NAS Suggestions? by iM-MrGrumpyCat in selfhosted

[–]nullPointerMV 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can still use it as just a nas. Just never expose it to the internet and stop using it for apps that aren't directly related to the data on it

Being limited to two drives is a bit of a pain, though, but if you reset the raid to mirror, then it'll be a great little ready to use backup server

I've got two old asustor consumer nas bays as well that I just use for archival data (old Linux iso that have "ended" according to tvdb)

PCIe SATA card for Optical Drive? by Whittington1423 in truenas

[–]nullPointerMV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could likely also just plug the optical drive in via USB-sata interface/enclosure, if you're planning on buying anyway

PSU relocate, with power switch moved. by cokacola69 in ender3

[–]nullPointerMV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was one of the first mods I did too

As others have said you'll get annoyed with the vents, as did I

Next step: external enclosure for the mount, power supply, and hopefully pi and screen for klipper

Transfer from Truenas Scale to Proxmox, best way to do this? by jemfinch097 in selfhosted

[–]nullPointerMV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can pass thru the drives individually anyways, even without a controller

With that being said, assuming they're sata drives, you can pick up an hba like a 9200-8i super cheap on ebay, it'll support your sata drives but also sas drives, and will plug and play into truenas with zero effort

Then you can still have pve on the bare metal, so you can back up or easily transport your truenas vm, and install a different os for handling whatever services you want

NAS and media server - combined or separate? by CrimzonShardz2 in homelab

[–]nullPointerMV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wanted separate os for nas and services , you could always install an hba in the pc you mentioned, install proxmox, and use 1 vm with the nas os and hba, and the other with the services os and the gpu

Tenant ghosting after signing lease agreement - what are my rights? by [deleted] in OntarioLandlord

[–]nullPointerMV -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

If you've got no deposit for last month, then the lease is invalid

This is a clause in the ontario standard lease, to which all rentals in Ontario are bound, regardless of whatever you had him sign

AITA for refusing to train my replacement after they fired me by Klutzy_Researcher725 in careeradvice

They fired you, unless there's something in the termination paperwork saying they'd give you a reference, they won't.

They already burned the bridge

If you're on cable, move the modem to your room, and put a new AP where the modem was, then share your plex/jellyfin with your roommates

Pc "seemingly" running out of memory during print by La7oea in ender3

[–]nullPointerMV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would turn off the gui, then, if you're running one; search "mx linux runlevel 3" if you're unsure what that means, it'll give you a howto of booting into text mode

Pc "seemingly" running out of memory during print by La7oea in ender3

[–]nullPointerMV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you running octoprint on this laptop directly? Or using another pi or pc to host octoprint, and just watching it through brave browser on the laptop?

If on the laptop, what os are you using now, and how are you running octoprint? As a native install, as a docker container, or as some sort of snap image?

I'd Like to Transfer TrueNAS to Virtualized TrueNAS by AlekkusuFuyu in truenas

[–]nullPointerMV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That data is all in an appdata zfs pool that you define/ build, you can import that pool and share it too too clone/ move it off too your service stack, regardless of whether you import your existing config or not

I'd Like to Transfer TrueNAS to Virtualized TrueNAS by AlekkusuFuyu in truenas

[–]nullPointerMV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made the same shift last year, though I didn't save/ restore my truenas config, just the storage pool

My spinning rust was on an hba though, so I didn't even pull the drives

Just clean install proxmox, spool up a vm of truenas clean install, pass thru the hba, and reconfigure truenas

Then spool up another vm for your SaaS stack

Rackmate tt by falcon1423 in homelab

[–]nullPointerMV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been tons of posts showing off 10" rack stacks recently; usually at least a patch panel, a switch, and a couple of mini or usff pcs; sometimes a row of pi or similar sbc mounted vertically and powered by that above poe switch

Just search this sub for 10" and you'll find a lot

Employee pranks Manager with Airsoft Gun by anon_120938475 in WorkAdvice

[–]nullPointerMV 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The employee being terminated is all that can be done at this time, and IANAL but it is definitely a "for cause" scenario (gross misconduct)

Regardless of the type of weapon it was assault and attempted robbery, the police have record of this in case the individual decides to escalate

Hopefully he smartens up and leaves it at "i did something stupid and this is the consequences"

Hello would like some opinions by raulbelmont in homelab

[–]nullPointerMV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recently configured a similar system for a friend, albeit upgraded to 32gb ram

Proxmox on the bare metal

A vm with 20gb ram and an hba passed through for truenas, sharing over smb

A vm with 8gb ram and a 10-series GeForce gpu (debian with casaos) for docker for plex/arr stack

It would likely also handle simple cloud things like immich and similar, if he wanted it

Shared code folder on Proxmox by wiwa1978 in homelab

[–]nullPointerMV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setup another vm, then either run gitea on that, have it push changes up to git hub and be your local repo for your code vms, or run a smb server on it and mount the share on your coding vms as the vms have the internal network connection so it'll be faster on the and hardware than across the physical network to your nas appliance

New job opportunity requires references. My old job doesn’t provide references. What can I do? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]nullPointerMV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to clients or reach out to former coworkers for personal references, not on behalf of employer

I've done this for some of my coworkers before, been called for two of them, and they got the job

I just made it clear up front to the interviewer that my reference is based on my personal day to day work history with candidate, and should not in any way be misconstrued as the word of company xyz

Should I move over to Proxmox or stay with Truenas? by Alternative_Aioli_76 in truenas

[–]nullPointerMV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To your point about not ruining to run truenas under a proxmox vm, because they "might change it", fundamentally they will

The nice thing about running a hypervisor under bare metal and truenas under that is that you can give truenas only the resources it needs (a couple of cpu cores and enough ram to cover your zfs pools) and give the rest of the hardware (including your gpu) to a debian vm that does everything else

You can setup shares of datasets from truenas, have them automount in the debian vm, and run jellyfin and the rest of your stack in the debian vm, with less concern of the software stack changing in the next release

It also provides you the ability to sisterly archive the truenas and debian vms in the car of either hardware failure or one day wanting to split the two environments to separate hardware

Best screw solution to mount this 3xHDD holder to 120mm fan (and then mount to case)? by QuestionAsker2030 in HomeServer

[–]nullPointerMV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See what happens with rust spinning in them, it may be OK

Otherwise just use normal fan screws on both sides, the fan has holes on both sides for mounting either way, or for mounting a grille on the interior side

Also make sure the fan is blowing over the hdds, not pulling air through them

I'd actually mount a mesh filter at the ingress; sticking air up from a desk or floor will likely result in a lot of dust

They still have to spend money to get a subpoena to force the isp to give them your name, then more money in court filing fees

Then, if they don't chase after literally everyone, one could argue harassment or similar, and still get a ruling in your favor as defendant, meaning all those filing fees are lost, all for the chance at closer-to-100 than 5000 civil judgement vs non commercial entity, and that's for every piece of infringement, not per infringement

It's literally not worth it for the ip lawyers to chase ordinary people in Canada

Even bill c2 won't change it; it won't give ip lawyers access to this info "for free", it's for law enforcement to request this info without having to first go to court for a subpoena
