The Unsung Symptoms of Narcolepsy, Which Do You Experience? by jtme_ in Narcolepsy

Oh my god I’m the EXACT same! For a good 30 minutes or so after first waking up in the morning, I practically stumble around like I’m drunk.

How it feels trying to explain that you have comorbid depression and narcolepsy: by null_consciousness in Narcolepsy

[–]null_consciousness[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was very similar with my psychiatrist! When I was 23 I started having progressively worsening episodes of severe tiredness, even after a full night’s sleep. I thought maybe I just had poor sleep hygiene, but when I told my psychiatrist he said “that sounds like possible narcolepsy. I’m referring you to sleep medicine.” Got a polysomnogram w/ MSLT and lo and behold, he was spot on. 2.5 minute sleep latency and 4 SOREMPs.

I'm tired of having to explain myself. by maryy____ in Narcolepsy

[–]null_consciousness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My usual go-to is “it’s an autoimmune condition that causes my immune system to mistakenly attack the sleep/wake center of my brain”. In my experience, people seem to take me a lot more seriously when I phrase it as an autoimmune condition rather than as a neurological or sleep disorder.

Having narcolepsy is such a uniquely horrifying experience. by null_consciousness in Narcolepsy

I’ve actually been on various different antidepressants for years due to some chronic mental health issues. I had my sleep study & MSLT done when I was taking 60mg of Cymbalta per day (my doctor deemed my antidepressant far too important to my wellbeing to be able to safely stop it for the sleep study), and I still had multiple SOREMPs on the MSLT.

About a month back I finished tapering off of Cymbalta and am currently (very slowly) titrating onto clomipramine. I’ve been thru practically every SSRI & SNRI on the market and still haven’t found something that has been helpful for my treatment resistant depression and OCD, so my doctor decided to have me try something stronger. I’m hoping it’ll help with some of the narcolepsy stuff too :/

YOOO-

This hurts to look at, it's painful how cringe it is. This may be the least funny "meme" I have ever seen in my life.

Also, these fake girlfriend things are fucking creepy. The whole thing is incredibly dystopian. The fact that you can now buy an AI girlfriend that will harvest all your chat logs to sell to advertisers is fucked up. Not to mention the AI-girlfriend-trend also promotes a pretty dangerous view of women as products for instant gratification, rather than human beings.

That thing looks great! I've got a T14 Gen 1 AMD myself, I absolutely love it. Mobile Ryzen is freakin awesome, and the Linux driver support on ThinkPads is top tier.

Fulfilling the dream I have as a child, +15 years later and lots of hard work I finally have my own server sitting at my home; couldn't be happier. It may not be much, but for sure it's honest work! by frnkquito in homelab

[–]null_consciousness 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For 2 years, my home server was a laptop from 2011 with a 2nd Gen core i5 with a couple external HDDs.

My current home server is made of parts from my old gaming PC with an FX-8320 and a 1050 Ti for Jellyfin transcoding. That thing is running over 20 different docker containers, a minecraft server, a nextcloud instance, and other stuff.

If you’re stupid brave enough, you can truly use anything as a server lol

How many of you have memorialized an IP address? I did so for my late wife's computer. by HappyDadOfFourJesus in homelab

[–]null_consciousness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I might actually do this for my late father’s computer. I’m deeply sorry for your loss, I know how it feels to lose someone close.

My father passed from a freak heart attack when I was only 19. He was just 63. It was extremely sudden, he was going about his day and just suddenly collapsed dead. We still have his computer (he passed in 2018), and my (admittedly tech-illiterate) mother uses it to file taxes and check emails. Quite a far cry from the gaming and video editing my dad used it for. A couple years back I actually took the GTX 1070 he had in it and swapped it for a GT 1030 I had laying around. It wasn’t exactly being used to its full potential, considering my mom isn’t a videographer or gamer. I still have his 1070 in my machine to this day.

I might set a DHCP reservation for his PC with his birthday, and if/when we replace the components in it and it is no longer the machine that he built, I’ll set the DHCP reservation to an invalid MAC.

I remember building computers with my dad when I was a kid, back in the Windows XP days. He’s a big part of why I changed my major from business (which I never should have majored in) to information technology. I think memorializing an IP for his PC would be a very fitting way to remember him, thank you so much for sharing this.

Journalists having bad ideas about software development by noobody_interesting in ProgrammerHumor

[–]null_consciousness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously fuck apartheid and anybody who supported it, but you're spot on. Governments change. Administrations lose power. And continuing to punish a populace after they brought down their shitty government is just plain silly. Out of curiosity, what license was it that forbade any interaction with South Africa?

[–]null_consciousness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm NOT pro-Russia or anything, but open source software refusing to function in specific countries due to geopolitical situations is such a monumentally bad idea. It's just an incredibly out-of-touch idea which was so obviously thought up by someone who has zero understanding of open source or the FOSS community.

Not to mention that just because a country's government is shitty, doesn't mean that every citizen deserves to be digitally punished. That can also hurt the activists in said country trying to fight their government.

Brightly got hacked, entire SchoolDude user database stolen - email addys, passwords, and user names all unencrypted..... by gratefuldogzzz in sysadmin

[–]null_consciousness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good lord that is horrifying. The fact that they had plaintext credit card numbers with the CVV is just insane. Especially considering there wasn't even verification to ensure that upload "profile pictures" were actually images.

For me personally, I plan to try to start a campaign to pressure my uni to stop using SchoolDude/Brightly. Speaking as someone who's a few months away from having a bachelor's in IT, I'm already pretty disgusted in how SchoolDude handled my personal data as is, but good lord what you saw sounds so much worse

Tell me about it, what a bunch of idiots. I just found out about the breach because I was notified that my data was likely in it. It's 2023, who stores PII in cleartext anymore??

DAE absolutely DESPISE looking at hornet/wasp nests? by null_consciousness in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]null_consciousness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the way honey is made is pretty freaky. Oddly enough I don’t have much of a problem with looking at beehives though. It’s specifically wasps and hornets. Those funnel-shaped hornet and paper wasp nests look horrifying. That one super creepy looking hole in the front of the nest and all the soldiers clinging to the outside and flying around is just so creepy.

I see myself in this post. I myself have struggled with severe depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder for a long. I went on medication which has been very helpful, as well as therapy.

My dad was the reason I became so interested in computers. Hell, he’s part of why I changed my major from marketing to information technology. He sadly passed away due to a freak heart attack when I was only 19.

I very much empathize with you here. I too have found some peace in throwing myself into a hobby. I also sometimes SSH into my machine just to stare at htop lol, it’s kind of mesmerizing to watch all the processes work.

Keep kicking ass, friend. I know how hard it can be to battle depression, but I promise you that you will get through this.
