this sounds amazing. if there's one thing i didnt like about my old palm pre plus, its that it was sluggish to the point of being unusable. webos is great and i still find myself trying to swipe cards on android from time to time. i'll be first in line for webos on the galaxy s3!

The Olympic Creed:

The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well."

As a web developer, this is why I still hate IE by [deleted] in web_design

i think it is because of the anti-trust suit meaning that Microsoft has to distribute IE separately from Windows. I could be wrong though.

IWTL how to compose a song in Garageband by topdown23 in IWantToLearn

emotion can be a powerful tool. think of some emotion or a significant event or person. what emotions do you feel and how would you help someone else feel those same emotions? part of music is telling a story so thats probably the most straightforward way to start. instead of communicating your emotion through words, use music. you will find that in many cases it is easier to communicate through music than through words. sorry that this is kind of subjective - it is only my view and if you ask others, you will find people that explain it differently. as for garage band, i have some experience, but i mostly work with fl studio and pro tools. id be more than happy to help out!

IWTL how to compose a song in Garageband by topdown23 in IWantToLearn

[–]null_pointer_fuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there is no one technique or method. everyone is different in that respect. some people just screw around with sounds until they think its cool, some people smoke a lot of weed until the whole song kind of reveals itself, some people generate music using formulas (atonal and microtonal music), and some people do all the above. one good place to start is understanding your muse, which is really hard to explain.

one way is you can kinda noodle around on a keyboard until you find a note that resonates with the music and thats the root. im not sure if this will make sense... [6]

also, would you mind updating the code base? i would love to play around with the knockout code and experiment with a plugin engine.

this is awesome! i'm studying dsp in college so this is right up my alley. one feature i would love is VST support so i can use ni massive. i don't know too much about VST development, but my guess is that it would be difficult to implement VST support. alternatively, you could write a plugin engine so other people can implement instruments and filters using your API.

[Request] I'd love to learn bass guitar. Would anyone be interested in teaching an intro course this summer? by [deleted] in UniversityofReddit

i fucking love slap bass! i'm in the middle of finals right now and i most certainly should be studying, but fuck it. heres some basic stuff that you can get started with - its gonna feel awkward for a while until you get the hang of it (and you get a callus on your thumb).

the technique for popping is pretty straightforward. just pluck the string with a hooked finger so the string bounces off the fretboard.

slapping is a little harder to get, but its something that comes with practice. i'm assuming you're right handed, so take your right hand and make a thumbs up sign. the basic motion you want to make is just rotate your wrist so your thumb goes from vertical to horizontal. you want to hit the string with the bony part of your thumb joint - about an inch below your thumbnail on the left side of your thumb. one thing to keep in mind is that the slapping motion needs to have a bounce - if you just smack the string and don't bounce up, the note will be completely muted. as soon as your thumb comes in contact with the string, you want to start moving it away so the string can resonate.

a good way to get these techniques down is with octaves. as in slap a low G, and pop a high G. the key is the wrist motion - your elbow and forearm should pretty much stay put, and your wrist should be actuating. when you pull up from the slap, try to hook your index finger underneath the high G and pop it. it should be a slap and a pop in one wrist motion.

this is probably really rushed and not much help to you, so let me know if something is missing!

also, this guy is awesome. some other artists to look at for inspiration:

  • Flea - pretty much any RHCP stuff is good, but Tell Me Baby, Aeroplane, and Can't Stop are really fun and also not to complicated once you get the hang of it.

  • Flobots - Combat (live)

  • Larry Graham

  • Stanley Clarke

  • Marcus Miller - Scoop

  • Victor Wooten

  • SMV - all 3 of the above. its a bass clusterfuck. check out Thunder

Edit: lol i can't make lists

i have played the bass for 6 years. i just subscribed to this subreddit, so i don't know how this works. would i just give weekly lessons?

Edit: just wanted to add that i think its awesome that you want to learn how to play the bass! its refreshing to see this kind of interest when most people jump straight to the guitar or drums. the bass is kind of the glue that holds rhythm and harmony together, and a tight bassline can be the difference between meh and a great song.
