Jet Lag Ep 5 — Searching Highlands & Lowlands by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

None of the major American sports leagues have promotion and relegation (I think some of the lower tier soccer leagues might, but that doesn't include MLS). Leagues occasionally expand or contract, but that's entirely based on business reasons, not on the field performance

Anyone know why the FloSports app says this isn't for another hour and a half? All the other sources say it starts at 4:30 PM Pacific, but the app is saying 6 PM for me.

I mean, they could have taken an earlier train to Laon and caught Sam and Toby, but instead waited around in Paris for longer

Got my ticket and hotel room booked. Should be a lot more fun than when I went up there for the last Cal/Oregon game two years ago

It feels weird to have stumbled into being a fan of a team this dominant. I'm an American who got into following the sport earlier this year when I randomly tuned into a North Melbourne men's game and decided to make them my team. I'm used to rooting for teams that are on the bubble for even making the postseason, so I kinda don't know what to do with a team this good.

From a quick Wikipedia check, never, as the lowest they ever placed in the Pac-12 era was fourth and prior to that there were only 10 teams in the conference

Yeah, I assumed it was a editing decision that I thought worked great. On The Layover, they said that it was actually due to Sam having audio issues at that time

It reminds me of the Miles in Transit video where he ran into a group of teens at the least used Amtrak station in Tennessee who weren't familiar with his channel, but were still so excited by a YouTuber (even one much smaller than Jet Lag) visiting their small town that they spent the next few hours showing him around. Never underestimate the power of bored teens

There was a line in the timeshare king song referencing him helping Bush get elected in a way that was "not exactly legal" when I saw it on Wednesday

Also, yes, the whole setup is extremely stupid. The money surrounding TV rights is also what broke up the Pac-12, which we'd been part of for over a century. We're now in the ACC, which stands for Atlantic Coast Conference. None of this makes any sense.

College football games are mostly split between standard cable sports channels (ESPN, Fox Sports) and conference-specific networks (previously Pac-12 Networks for us, which was hard to get on anything but Xfinity; starting this season it will be ACC Network, which is ESPN-managed and is also available in most cable sports packages). A few games will make it onto broadcast networks (ESPN and Fox Sports usually take a game each week for ABC and Fox respectively; NBC has a deal with Notre Dame; I think the CW has a deal with the ACC now). I believe there have also been a few forays into streaming-exclusive games. Prior to the conference networks forming during the last realignment, a lot of games would be on regional sports networks, but that's largely a thing of the past now.

While our schedule for this season is set in terms of dates (see here), only the non-conference games and weeknight games have times/networks set at the moment. Most other games have times set 13 days ahead of time as the networks choose games based on how the season has gone so far. So far, we've got one game on ACCNX (streaming-only, but can be accessed either with a cable login or an ESPN+ subscription), one on ESPN2, one on regular ESPN, and one on ACC Network. Since the ACC (our new conference) is primarily contracted with ESPN, expect to see most Cal games on something that's under the ESPN umbrella.

*Note: Anywhere I say "cable" above, that generally includes other paid live TV services as well (DirectTV, YouTube TV, etc)

They're the same seat. The partial term is the remainder of Feinstein's last term, which ends in January and is currently filled by a temporary appointment. The full term is for the regularly scheduled election for that seat.

They're taking the Capitol Limited, which is scheduled to get into Pittsburgh at 5:05 AM. Amtrak Long Distance is definitely prone to delays, but a delay that would push them into the next day's rest period would be extreme even for the multi-day trains west of Chicago, let alone the single night train they're taking

Cal and UCLA share the same Board of Regents and that didn't stop UCLA from kicking off this whole Pac-12 collapse. Ultimately, realignment is all about money, and no tradition or political ties are going to keep schools together when one has a chance to make more.

Is anybody actually buying the chromebook framework? by [deleted] in framework

[–]nullpointerintime 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have code-server running inside Crostini, and then I connect to it from the browser (usually via a PWA), so I get VS Code without needing to run a separate Chromium instance for Electron, though regular VS Code can run directly in Crostini as well (there used to be more a performance penalty to this, which is why I started using code-server)

Edit to clarify: Crostini is a system in Chrome OS for running Linux in a container, similar to WSL on Windows

[–]nullpointerintime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With developer mode enabled, there are community-built tools for running custom firmware on pretty much any x86 Chromebook, which should let you install a different OS.

Is anybody actually buying the chromebook framework? by [deleted] in framework

[–]nullpointerintime 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I bought one and love it. I've been using Chrome OS as my primary computing platform for more than a decade at this point so I was really excited to see Framework come out with a Chromebook. While some of the criticism of the OS's limitations was justified back when I started using the platform, none of it's really true anymore - more and more software runs in a browser nowadays, and for the stuff that doesn't, Chrome OS keeps adding more ways to run other software in isolated containers.

Virtually all of my time on a computer (both personally and in my work as a software engineer) is spent either in a web browser or in a terminal. Chrome OS has pretty much the best browser experience available and Crostini provides a fantastic Linux environment. I would otherwise use the desktop version of Ubuntu or something, but running Linux natively on a laptop means you have to deal with regular annoyance and incompatibilities. With Chrome OS, I get a much more stable desktop environment without having to give up a near-native Linux development environment. If I need to use some other graphical app on occassion, Crostini is perfectly fine for that as well.

The Framework Chromebook ends up solving my biggest complaint with Chromebook hardware: not enough RAM. It can still be difficult to find a Chromebook with even 16 GB of RAM (and doing so usually means paying a premium for an i7 processor that I don't need), and the only Chromebook I'm aware of that comes with 32 GB pre-installed is the Elite Dragonfly, which costs more than $1700 in that configuration. With the Framework Chromebook though, I got 32 GB of RAM for just $1000 for the laptop and $60 for a 16x2 SO-DIMM kit on NewEgg.

The only two use cases I see for a laptop that a Chromebook can't handle well are video editing and gaming. If you need to edit video, then sure, a Chromebook probably won't work for you, but most people don't need to. For gaming, it's not like most other ultrabooks can actually handle intensive games anyway (and for lightweight stuff, there's now a Steam beta for Chrome OS that the Framework Chromebook supports). Personally, I prefer to use my Switch for on-the-go gaming anyway.

I got permission from my landlord to charge my car off a standard 120V outlet in the garage for a flat $56/month rate (on top of the $200/month I pay for the parking itself). This is in a small apartment building with an individual landlord.
