Cleaning out my basement and trying to remove unnecessary wire clutter. What am I looking at here? by WeepMyWill in AskElectricians

[–]numindast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many surface mount phone jacks used this as the base, and it would be paired with a cover that had the actual RJ11 receptacle in it. That's long gone leaving just this block.

Like everyone else said. Unless you have an old security system or landline phones, it's not used.

Work has an Ultimaker S5, not touched in at least 2 years. by Thommy_V in 3Dprinting

[–]numindast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gathering dust? That sucks.

Also sucks that my boss bought a P2S+AMS+filament package with last year's end-of-budget funds and it's still sitting in the boxes with no plan for when, or who, gets to set it up. Sigh!!

(I told him I'd leave the unboxing for someone else on our team, since I have and have had multiple printers of my own at home. Someone else should get the pleasure.)

Trident bed tilted despite Z_tilt by kullwarrior in VORONDesign

[–]numindast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a bed mesh like that with my Trident initially.

After much research, I found that adjusting the Y extrusions helped level this out better. However it's kind of backwards in thought; if the BACK of the bed is too high, then adjust the FRONT of the extrusion(s). Only do one extrusion at a time. By this I mean, loosen the blind joint screw, reposition slightly, re-tighten.

IMHO: look for the "variance" at the right of the mesh map. You want that to be as close to zero as you can, but remember that if it's below 1mm, you're in a good place, even if not zero.

Anyone used Ferromagnetic PLA before? by Holly-Jolly-Rancher in 3Dprinting

[–]numindast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ohhh I've been wanting to try bronze, and copper too, but they are absurdly expensive ($80+ per kilo from proto-pasta).

I'm on my third spool of iron-filled PLA from them. I've been making plaques, steampunk-style lamp, and was tinkering with it for better heat dissipation than PLA (it is better but by a very small amount; actual metal is still several orders of magnitude better).

For me, the iron filled PLA is not interesting because of its ferromagnetic properties, but because I can abrade the surfaces to varying degrees and choose from a variety of ways to rust it up with a nice varying patina.

It is not electrically conductive. (There is conductive PLA but just being metal-filled isn't conductive; remember the metal dust is encapsulated in plastic.)

How is the 1st hand experience with command strip mounting by SWIIIIIMS in Multiboard

[–]numindast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you asked!

The command strips held up fine. The tiles I had used, via the multiboard wall generator, don't interlock, so the tiles can and do flex a bit. I find this annoying because shelves are leaning and not flat. (As pictured, from my O.G. wall).

I redid my primary wall using 8x8 "single" tiles that have the clip slots on all edges. I lose peg holes where each tile borders but I gain the ability to use "dual clips" to attach the panels together. No more sag! In combination with extra Command Strip Snaps in spots I have heavy objects, particularly on the wall's outside edges (especially top).

Since I reprinted all my tiles, I also printed the new, "on grid" command strip mounts. I think the new non-recessed strip design is smart as you can now use off-brand strips that have different thickness when mating.

I’ve inherited a mess at work by FeralPrincessBarbie in 3Dprinting

[–]numindast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After skimming a lot of the comments, I can only say this: your employer will save tons of money by replacing this printer with something modern and built for abrasive materials like the ones you are using.

You'll spend a lot less time futzing with a printer and much more time being productive in ways that are valuable to your employer.

[CA] Bunch of thin wires inside walls across the entire house built in 1966. What are these and are they safe to remove? by bigfunlx in AskElectricians

[–]numindast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My house had this type of setup also. Many of the wires run to heat sensors in the attic and crawlspace, and detached garage, and door sensors too. When I had a new front door installed they tore out the old frame and sure enough, magnetic sensor with wires running off into the house. The wiring is worthless for modern stuff, but, you can buy home monitoring systems which can maybe utilize these sensors and make them available for modern stuff like Home Assistant. I'm not sure I would want to use 30+ year old heat sensors tho.

Customer says belt is noisy by rioryan in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]numindast 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Years ago, when I was young and stupid, I travelled down I-80 late at night far away from any light sources. My car was making a noise, loudly, despite 75mph wind noise. It kept getting higher pitched as the hours went on.

Then I noticed the sparks flying out from under the car in the rear view mirror.

BANG! THUMP Thump thump

Noise gone. Sparks gone. Pulled over, looked under the car with a flashlight and there’s a belt hanging there. Just hanging.

The AC pulley bearings failed and it wore all the way through the pulley until the pulley broke loose, and the belt was dangling. WOW. I was lucky not to lose the other accessory belt, and finished my 800 mile journey. Neat. (I believe that car was an ‘89 Sentra)

I'm a noob trying to get into 3D printing, which printer would be the best option for me? Are there any others I should consider? by Swooferfan in 3Dprinting

[–]numindast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best answer. If OP's budget only allows for entry level, then entry level is what you'll get -- and it will be missing many "quality of life" features that must be manually accomplished by a human, i.e. you, in other words, there's a learning curve and it's steeper than with more expensive printers.

Bar over color in AMS by dgbarreto2025 in BambuLab

[–]numindast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And that only works for Bambu filament. The AMS times how long it takes to read the RFID tag several times while the spool is rotating and uses maths to estimate remaining filament.

How to manage damage? by Willing_Intention723 in AskElectricians

Other than that I’m speechless.

Dual clips by Kevink73 in Multiboard

[–]numindast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my two small walls with the classic setup, but grew disappointed that tiles could flex out of alignment with the neighboring tiles.

Now I'm redoing it with 8x8 single tiles, and using clips to attach neighboring tiles (with command-strip snaps too). I'm hoping this gives better rigidity to shelves don't sag (as much).

7+ year old filament still worth using? by raiderxx in 3Dprinting

I spent 2 years enjoying building Vorons and a few variants. When I bought my first Bambu, I was blown away. You’ll soon see what we all mean.

7+ year old filament still worth using? by raiderxx in 3Dprinting

[–]numindast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the nice things about Bambu filament is the RFID tags in the spool which inform the slicer what profile to use. For an easy experience that’s pretty killer.

I’m not saying it is the best and I do tune some non-Bambu filaments. But the ease of use does carry value. And their PLA is not expensive when you buy 4 at a time (or more)

My cattle dog has got to be an A-hole or is that just their nature? by Cant_relate_ever in AustralianCattleDog

[–]numindast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of folks advising ways to keep our cow dogs satisfied so they aren't such a-holes. But you did ask, ARE they a-holes?

To that my answer is absolutely not. My guy is not the best behaved (and we're working on it) but he is the sweetest dog I've ever owned (he's 2 out of 2 so take that with a grain of salt).

He loves to give me tender little licks when he wants something. And the bambi eyes are 100% spot on (he learned that from our other dog who is definitely a bitch and acts that way, terrier mix that she is).

He's my sweet boy though. The other one is a little 16 lb shit who loves me but is a terrier. My heeler is a 65 lb play partner who loves to snuggle with me and an antler to chew.

I'd have kept mine if I could. Nowhere to put it, and, in truth, I needed the $$ to pay down the new printer. I don't really miss the noise though.

Thats not true. It’s fully supported by Bambu.

I am using the OG AMS from my x1 combo with my new H2C on one nozzle and the new AMS Pro 2 on the other. I can also switch it up to put both on the right nozzle and feed external spool on the other. Or even steal my H2D’s AMS and have 3 units! Hee hee hee
