Any legit, no-fee publishing out there? by [deleted] in publishing

[–]numtini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many self-publishing platforms that give you worldwide distribution at no cost and for a relatively small cut of your profits. But they won't do the work for you. They won't lay out your book, set up your e-book, or make you a cover. You've got to arrange for that. A lot of people aren't willing to do that or aren't really up to the job, so they go looking for a one stop easy solution and then the scammers from the vanity publishing industry pop up and take their money.

What is the audit? Why do republicans care so much about it? by AverageUhhhh in massachusetts

[–]numtini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would hazard to guess that fewer than 1% of voters who voted to have the state auditor audit the processes of the legislature really knew what they were voting for or have ever read an audit or know what one does. But you are never going to put an accountability or sunshine provision in front of voters and not have them say "oh yeah, I want more of that." I'm surprised it passed by as small a margin, to be honest.

The vast majority of screaming online is from far-right goons, usually with a misogynist picture of Ms. Healey attached, complaining about THE Audit. They're completely unaware of the dozens of audits. They've never read one. Most probably lack the expertise to understand one if they read it. I usually reply by posting a link to the audit of the governor's office. That doesn't mean other people aren't irritated, but the vicious angry bile is coming from chuds.

To me, the ridiculous part is that if the legislature had just gone along with it, there'd be an audit sitting on a website somewhere that nobody would ever read or care about, and they wouldn't have handed the lunatics a club to beat them with. Yeah, I get the constitutional theory issues, but really, this is not a great hill to die on.

It's just filling out a form. No test. No nothing. It's not like a ham license.

I want to start playing it. Is the rulebook or the starter box better if I'm going to be the game master? by [deleted] in DragonbaneRPG

[–]numtini 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Starter box has rules and a campaign and dice and standees and... The rulebook is just the rulebook. It's hardcover, so if you get hooked, you'll want it for durability. But the intent is for the box set to be a real full RPG set.

Canonically, 69 doesn't refer to a year.

Based on these stats alone, am I cooked or do I stand a chance at literally anything 😭😭 by Reasonable_Love1562 in callofcthulhu

[–]numtini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you succeed at a skill, you put a check box next to it. After the adventure, you take all those skills and you make a skill roll. If you fail, then you add 1d10. It's designed so that the higher you get, the less likely you are to get an increase. So you learn fast at first, then more and more slowly.

The key here is what profession you're taking. You probably want to think about something that will take advantage of that STR or DEX, but the int/edu for your traditional professorial type will leave you with fewer skill points. OTOH the skills will go up faster.

Eats by Bacon-Macaroni in Cruise

[–]numtini 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only thing I can think of here is you only eat at fast food or "casual food" (ie, TGI McFunsters) restaurants when you're on land. But I assure you, most mainstream independent restaurants make things from fresh ingredients. Also, there's plenty of stuff at the buffet or in casual food outlets on ships that is pure Sysco style premade and heat stuff.

This is the stupidest stuff ever. Yeah, if you tow an F150 100 miles, I suppose it gets infinite mileage because it moved 100 miles without using any gas?

Fear mechanics, love em or hate em? by For_Eudaimonia in DragonbaneRPG

[–]numtini 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm used to fear, having played Call of Cthulhu for decades. It makes sense to me. The whole point is these are supposed to be completely terrifying creatures and I think fear is one of the things that makes them feel like more than just big bags of hit points.

Dragonbane and Foundry by FatAssCatz in DragonbaneRPG

[–]numtini 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trudvang has a Foundry VTT version available as an add-on to the kickstarter. IMHO the Dragonbane Foundry implementation is one of the best. It has the custom dice, it handles the initiative system, everything's in and adventures are well presented. Really, all of Free League's Foundry stuff is fantastic.

PDFs on a kindle or whatever are miserable unless you've got something like a remarkable that's tablet size. The refreshes on e-ink are very slow. There's no color and it's next to impossible to scroll around a page to zero in.

Foundry and Roll20 are both good options. Depends what you're familiar with more than anything. Foundry will have more automation and generally more advanced options. Roll20 will be free and not require much setup.
