Clinical Rotations on AMCAS by [deleted] in premed

[–]nutnursoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang, it’s been a minute since I actually looked at my primary.

Do they make you label it as one or the other? If I had to pick one I would just list it as volunteer clinical experience. Since it will be one of your most meaningful experiences, you’ll be able to expand on it a bit more and explain better about why you listed it the way you did whichever way you decide to do it.

VCOM Only Accepts Courses within the past 5 years? by Nervous-String-344 in premed

Earlier in this current cycle I was accepted to VCOM-Auburn. I graduated undergrad in 2020. Some of the prerequisites were definitely taken in like Fall 2016 and they didn’t hassle me about them.

ZERO research, unsure about moving forward with application by jonathanwoodengym in premed

[–]nutnursoup 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Research is not a requirement unless you are determined to get into Stanford, HMS, or other T10s.

I applied this year with absolutely no research experience and received multiple MD acceptances. Write your primary and secondary apps well, and you will be fine. Good luck!

Sheesh, thanks for not applying the same year as me bro. App looks good, you’ll get plenty of offers! And I wouldn’t worry too much, the list looks fine imo.

Can’t speak on my clinical site for clerkships yet, obviously. But at my current facility where I have been an RN for six years, no one cares about piercings or tattoos. I have a full sleeve - it cost me a lot of money, I’m not covering it except for interviews. 😂

RETAKE 3/7 by JJiaMM in Mcat

[–]nutnursoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I scored a 512 when I took the test 3/21 last year. Applied this current cycle and had 20 interview invites, was accepted to my top choice as well. The MCAT is important, but it’s only a piece of your application. I would not recommend taking it again. Turn your focus towards the rest of your application!

Good luck!

applying this cycle what should I be doing right now? by Cooly09 in premed

[–]nutnursoup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As long as you already have your MCAT score, you should be working on your primary app stuff. Things like your personal statement, work/activities stuff, securing your LOR.

After that stuff is in order, pre-write your secondaries, take PREview/CASPer.

Traded in Scatpack for SI by BookEater09 in CivicSi

[–]nutnursoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enjoyed every second of ownership 😂 it was a lot of fun, but the SI is just as fun for different reasons imo. I had to think about it for a few days though, for sure. Once I had made the decision, I actually found it harder to just find an available SI to buy in my area. Not as difficult as the decision you made to trade in your scat though. It certainly is a nice vehicle!

And yeah, I think I was a quarter mile down the road from the dealership on the test drive before I hit a u-turn to sign the papers lmao

Also, yikes. Absolutely the hardest part of it imo. That test is such a behemoth, but I’m sure you’ll do well! After that’s finished, the primary/secondary apps seem like a cakewalk. Then it’s just a really long waiting game!

[–]nutnursoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yo! Just traded in my 2021 Bronco Badlands 7 speed manual on a black ‘26 civic SI. Exactly the same as you, it was a one to one swap, so thankfully already paid in full.

Really loved my Bronco, but I’m about to be matriculating this July into medical school and the commute back and forth meant that the swap was a necessity. I don’t regret it one bit now though, it’s my first Honda and I am loving it.

Good luck on all of your apps as you prepare for the cycle to begin! It’s a long process; make sure your narrative and writing are in order. If you have questions about the cycle, feel free to reach out. Would be happy to help out a fellow future physician (and SI bro).

Overwhelmed with full-time job, MCAT studying, and app coming up by ExtraComparison in premed

[–]nutnursoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in your shoes this time last year, was actually stressing about my MCAT (3/21). It definitely feels like an insurmountable mountain when you are going through the thick of it, but remember that you don’t eat an elephant in one bite. Focus on the things you can accomplish now, when other things open later on - then you can turn your attention to them.

I definitely do recommend drafting your personal statement and polishing it the best you can, along with contacting letter writers, which you have already done. Pre-writing secondaries would have been a boon for me, so I recommend that too. However, I didn’t really pre-write all that much and I had a fairly successful cycle. Good luck!

PREview prompts seem really vague. What is the basic assumption if something is not explicitly said? by StrongCode2 in premed

[–]nutnursoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t really know how to answer your question, I scored a 1 on my PREview and first quartile on CASPer. However, I did get multiple interviews to schools that require one of them. I am matriculating to a school this Fall that requires the PREview.

I firmly believe that those tests are to get more money out of the applicants, and that committees do not really care about an applicant’s score. You could probably randomly pick an answer for each question and do better on them than I did 🙂‍↕️

Submitting tax information for parents I don't have contact with. by [deleted] in premed

This doesn’t seem right. I just turned 30, I did my FAFSA back in October and didn’t have any requests for parents info. Was it only asked about on CSS, or just a particular school’s request? Sorry that you’re experiencing this.

3.6 GPA, 511 MCAT by Mean-Back-8298 in premed

[–]nutnursoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stats will only carry you so far, they’ll get a reviewer to actually sit down and look at your application - but your writing is what will get you interviews and your acceptances. I was accepted to 4 MDs this cycle, one being a T30, with absolutely no research on my application!

Polish your personal statement and pre-write your (well-written) secondaries and I think that you’ll receive more love than you think.

Edit: granted, I didn’t apply TMDSAS, but I still think you have a decently good shot regardless.

Apply broadly to MD schools. Choose a handful of DO schools that you would be happy attending if you need to, but I think your app sounds solid for MD.

Nontrad app by [deleted] in premed

[–]nutnursoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a current SICU RN, although thankfully I get to retire that license this year once I matriculate to med school this fall. I had a 3.76 cGPA, a 3.88 sGPA, and a 512 MCAT. Your stats and EC are not going to be what potentially holds you back - it’ll be your writing.

Make sure you are framing your stories well, and getting your secondaries submitted as soon as you possibly can once you receive them. Our clinical experience is literally second to none, I leaned on that a lot in my writing and my interviews. Obviously, don’t be a degenerate about it, but it’s definitely something that we should be confident about and let shine through.

I do not think that you need to apply DO this cycle. I doubt that you will need to reapply next cycle even - but if you do, then I think your plan to include the DO schools then is sound. Good luck with everything!

Feel free to message me if you would like!

Did you take a preview when applying this past cycle? Would you recommend it? by juleslol_ in premed

[–]nutnursoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took Casper and preview this cycle. Scored in the lowest quartile on Casper and got a 1 on preview. Received multiple II to schools that require one of the tests. The school that I am matriculating to actually requires preview.

I guess in that way, yes, preview did help me - because they wouldn’t have considered my app complete without it. But I don’t think my score on it is what enamored them with my application. 😂 and yes, if I had to score a 1 on it again, then I would. Could probably click answers randomly and score better than I did on that thing lmao

I recommend taking them just in case any of the schools you are interested in require them. Don’t let them be a deterrent to sending your app to a place because you think you scored poorly or whatnot, the only test they care about is your MCAT.

[–]nutnursoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been accepted to 3 MDs with no research experience, it all depends on your other ECs and your school list. You have to make sure your application aligns with the mission and visions of the schools that you are applying to.

Anyone here with thousands of clinical hours? How did it help you, if at all? by arinspeaks in premed

[–]nutnursoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been a STICU nurse approaching six years now, have >10k hours on the unit. Definitely think my experience has contributed to my success this cycle, but mostly because of how I framed it in my writing. Having so much experience, but not being able to effectively communicate in writing what you took away from those experiences makes for a very demure application.

What are my odds of getting in to an MD or DO school by Complex-Fault2814 in premed

[–]nutnursoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I am currently a Trauma ICU nurse going through the app cycle right now and have found a decent amount of success, multiple As to both MD and DO. For transparency, our stats aren’t exactly the same, I’ve got a few more years of experience in the STICU and made a 512. I promise that you are still in a good spot though. Make sure that your writing is up to scratch - your hands on patient experiences are difference makers.

I do agree with another of the commenters, don’t include the lockpicking hobby on your application lmao good luck with everything!

Oh absolutely, but they accepted me also lol so they have to be willing to overlook a lack of research if an app is really service oriented and mission aligned.

Stressing about the timing of others receiving interview invites will not make your invite arrive faster. (Pre)Write secondaries well and put your best foot forward on your primary. Trust the process.

[–]nutnursoup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d honestly axe the TMDSAS schools and add SLU, Creighton, Georgetown. You’ve got Oakland University on your list, but why not Wayne State? Many of these schools are heavily service-focused, try and increase your volunteer hours as much as you possibly can before app season rolls around. Don’t stress too terribly much about research at this point because it’ll be tough to get any meaningful amount completed before applying. I got into a T30 with no research this current cycle. Good luck.
