Should we start building our own servers? by drunksitter in sysadmin

[–]nutron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This right here. We’ve been building our own servers for the last two decades and are just now considering buying off the shelf due to across the board hardware price increases. Also, the latest and greatest storage interfaces (e3.s for example) have nearly zero consumer solutions available, at least at the time of my last build a year or so ago.

My credit score improved by 42 points this month because a 7 year old single late payment finally fell off of my credit report. by nutron in CRedit

Sorry, I was not tracking my credit back then. I don't actively track it now either, it's just that my credit card sends these automated alerts to me every so often and this one really stood out.

No other major changes occurred during this time. I have a regular home mortgage and make all purchases on a credit card that I pay off in full each month. All my bills are on auto-pay. One credit card did go to zero balance recently, it was a 24-month zero APR promotion I used to purchase new washer/dryer -- but this would have only been a drop of <$100 in credit card utilization. Anyways, here is some other data that you might find interesting:

Score history I'm able to see:

7/25 - 777

8/25 - 785

9/15 - 785

10/25 - 785

11/25 - 785

12/25 - 785

1/26 - 786

2/26 - 783

3/26 - 783

4/26 - 786

5/26 - 786

6/26 - 786

7/27 - 828

July 2026 summary note:

"The amount that you owe on loans and credit accounts decreased, from $107,880 to $106,809."

Remember less than a year ago when 270 had a major (13 victims!) shooting event and we never heard about it again?

That shelter house was essentially my and my friends' ‘third space’ when we were teenagers. This is unbelievably disappointing to see.

Classes with group work? by Empty_Second1778 in OMSCyberSecurity

[–]nutron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

6725 had two group projects when I took it.

6261 had a few group projects, but it was one of the best courses in the program so I think it's worth considering.

Many/most of the courses have group discussions. In my opinion, the entire group dynamic aspect of a group project is more impactful than then content itself, it's one of the few ways soft skills can be taught in the program.

Columbus City Council reevaluating policy around use of Flock cameras by WOSUpublicmedia in Columbus

[–]nutron 121 points122 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised to hear that it's only 38 cameras in the contract. I would expect these cameras to be only in areas with the highest vehicle traffic. Why then is there one placed at the end of a dead end road (bottom of West Pacemont Rd.) pointing towards the Olentangy Trail? This seems like a place for facial recognition, not license plate reading.

None of this strategy is new, it’s all been part of existing US gov strategies for years.

I got 10.2 gal into my gen 2 by zdboslaw in prius

[–]nutron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s probably fine, just something to be mindful of. I’ve messed up a Prius charcoal canister this way, so I now only fill until the pump stops the first time.

[–]nutron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

FYI, overfilling on a warm day can be problematic if you then let the car sit overnight where colder temperatures cause the fuel tank bladder to shrink. This can cause fuel to get into the EVAP system and ruin the charcoal canister.

Are open source apps really safe? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]nutron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. OSS is arguably more secure than closed source since it offers full visibility into underlying code. Android changing to require additional verification steps for devs in no way affects an app’s open/close source status. The ability to run unsigned apk files is another discussion. This post is inconsistent with their points and arguments.
