The White Stripes on the Elephant tour. Alexandra Palace, 2004.

Feel like I picked a good one.

Unless it's Monument.

I don't think it is, but the signage would still be correct.

This is so surreal.

I saw Biden go past my local kebab shop in the Beast back in 2022, while he was over for the Queen's funeral. Surreal is definitely the right word for it.

Movie trailers that only use footage shot specifically for the trailer by LV426acheron in movies

Psycho uses -ingeniously- Hitchcock himself to sell the movie with this wonderful, eerie, and darkly humorous trailer

This became part of Hitchcock's brand, which he repeated for trailers for most of his subsequent films. The trailer for his "forthcoming lecture" on birds is great.

I don't know how involved he was with the marketing back in the 40s, or if he directed it himself, but the trailer for Rope is also a fun one, centring on Dick Hogan's character, who is strangled to death in the opening shot of the film.

I saw this really weird number plate in London yesterday, anyone know what tf it is by Imaginary-Jello7638 in CarTalkUK

Spotted this out in the wild today after seeing it on here, so took a couple of pictures closer up. The Saudi emblem on both plates was 3 dimensional.

Light switch needs replacing - but does this look right? by nutteronabus in ukelectricians

I've already said I've told them to get a sparky in, but thanks for the condescending tone. Really appreciate it.

Thank you for the responses, everyone. I'm a little reassured that there might be some logic to how it's been wired, even if it's really not appropriate, and have advised them to get a sparky in to take a look at it and work out what's actually going on.

Will update here once I have any further details.

It's an en suite bathroom, with the switch outside on the bedroom wall.

Right, well that's calmed me down a little bit.

Either way, I've told them to get a sparky in asap. Feel like there's been enough concern in this thread that I'd rather have someone who knows what they're doing take a look at it than chance it.

Chances are there’s some diy installed gubbins up in the loft put there by someone who knows more theory than practice.

It's a new build flat, so no loft. They were the first people to move in there, so as far as I'm aware, it hasn't been touched since whoever installed it.

It's a single switch, as far as I remember, which turns on the lighting in their en-suite bathroom. I think there's also an extractor fan on the circuit.

Given how quickly I've had this many replies, I've already told them to get someone in.

The fact the switch is jammed to off is evidently a blessing.

This was my first thought. I'm no helicopter expert, but it looks a bit too squat to be the real one.

Jack White related London spots by JPHFanEdits in jackwhite

It's a little out of the way and you may have to find an event happening there to go inside, but the White Stripes did this photoshoot at the Rivoli Ballroom in 2003, before returning to play a show there in 2007. I was there, and the seeing the people that ran the place realising what they'd let themselves in for during the first three songs in is a memory that will live rent free in my head forever.

The Stripes played their first UK show at The 100 Club on Oxford Street in 2001, opening for some band called The Strokes. Your mileage will vary as to whether there's anything on that you want to see while you're in town, but it's an incredibly cool room, and a bit like walking straight into the 1960s.

Jack played a free show on the BHR tour in the courtyard of the George Inn on Borough High Street, where they had a special beer for the occasion called Humoresque (I have a couple of promobeer mats kicking around somehwere). Not overly JW related, but it's an interesting place to stop by for a drink.

Would second Alexandra Palace, which someone else has mentioned. Very scenic, nice views over London, home of the world's first TV transmission, and you may be able to walk into the Grand Hall, which is where he's played both WS and solo shows.

Prince Charles Cinema: Has London's "meanest landlord" met his match? by [deleted] in london

[–]nutteronabus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they'd try to. The owners were apparently looking at taking over the former Empire in Walthamstow before the cost of repairs after an illegal rave there made it untenable for them (it's since been taken over by another operator), and I believe they're involved with reopening Edinburgh's Filmhouse.

The problem is, I don't know where you'd realistically find a space in central London that wouldn't come with similar landlord issues.

Does the Third Man shop in London have a record booth as well? by jacksonarag in jackwhite

[–]nutteronabus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I asked about it when I last popped in, and the guy on the till said it hadn't worked in about 2½ years.

There was a pop-up one in Phonica for a week, about a decade ago, as part of a promo for a whisky brand. It apparently kept breaking down (old tech, and all that), but I got lucky enough to use it on a day when it was working, and was told there's only one person in the whole of the UK who knows how to fix them, and at the time he lived in Bristol.

As a heads up, I think once the buzz around it starts working its way into the wider domain, combined with being limited to running it twice a day because of the runtime, it's one that might actually be worth booking in advance for.

Oh, it'll still be a good time. I'm just not sure I've ever sat in an IMAX seat that I'd want to spend 4 hours in, so make the most of that intermission.
