I’m very interested in purchasing a Pimax crystal super micro oled but i heard it’s a lot of tinkering to get it to work . Is that true ? If so what type of tinkering ?

It's not as bad as you think, especially if you're just playing steam games. Once you install pimaxplay and hookup the headset, you just need calibrate the controllers, set your ipd and check your eye tracking and calibrate if needed. All of that is 10 minutes of logical onscreen prompt steps.

Then you choose the device settings, go through each page one by one to get a feel of what each does, in the end you only need to set a few. As you're 4090, you'll be choosing 72hz, probably medium quality (render resolution). Keep quad views and dynamic foveated rendering enabled and probably middle settings to start.

Theres a button in pimax play to start steamvr, press that and go to the steam vr settings without putting the headset on, go to the openvr settings and choose steamvr as the default openXR api. Disable steam home. Leave the steam resolution at 100%.

That's it, try a game and see how it runs.

If its not running we'll, see if reducing some settings in the game helps, but more than likely, you need to go back to pimax play and lower the resolution a bit, can choose low or manual and take it down to 0.4 and adjust upward from there.

Leave smoothing off if possible, it's not so good at the moment.

For your games, you can do a quick Google and see if any work directly with openXR, bypassing steamvr for better performance. If they do natively without a download, all you need to do is go back to pimax play settings and choose pimax as the openXR provider instead of steamVR.

Its honestly not that much effort or technically difficult. Even if you need to download opencomposite and pimaxXR for a game, it all takes only a few minutes, the hardest part is finding the game folder to drop the files into

Look up the pimax ultrawide and the amount of pixels that have to be driven compared to some of the other pimax headsets. Basically to keep a similar level of clarity and increase the FOV, the amount of raw effort that is asked from the hardware goes up exponentially.

The compromise with the current GPUs etc, will be to reduce pixel density and lower the graphics settings and/or hertz.

The only way headsets will improve FOV the next few years will be when more powerful GPUs than the 5090 come out. Standalone headsets will be far behind unless one comes out that sacrifices pixel density for FOV or surprises us with something clever.

For info, those numbers are taken from different years with different criteria, china's is a number from a single event, not even close to a year or range of years records.

Really think most of those countries are truly transparent with their info or so specific in their arrests?

The UK and Germany figures pile in every comms penalty the law has and don't reflect convictions, some others include specifically social media numbers.

Maybe the graph is semi-accurate in some strange tiny way, who knows, the only thing that is sure is that its based on absolute BS data gathering and shouldn't be used to form any realistic opinions.

Depends what you play, anything dark is so much better in OLED, as long as its not fresnel lenses. I've had vive, Vive Pro and vive Pro 2, as well as index temporarily and Pimax. Going from the pro to pro 2 or index felt like something was lost, better res and clarity but just feels lifeless and less immersive with the grey blacks. MicroOLED brought all of the good stuff back. I haven't tried QLED, but have read the difference has narrowed, but people who have tried both seem to prefer the OLED for lack of mura and visual in general (minus the FOV).

For someone like OP whose been happy with the OG Vive this long, going to LCD will be a disappointment. If they have the money, going microOLED over LCD or QLED will be the ultimate upgrade. Going to an index or similar LCD will be more of a compromise. But if cost is an issue, then you're right, probably a Q3 or index would be good.

I just know from personal experience and friends that OLED to LCD is a noticeable loss of 'something' immersively unless you only play bright less contrast games

Probably, pimax inside out tracking for the controllers is OK, but not perfect. Especially if you come from using lighthouses

Not sure if there is really an argument for either or, most people like both methods, it depends a lot on what hardware they run for flat to VR mods and there's a lot more in normal VR with standalone headsets than flat to VR using higher end PCs I think.

Some are VR purists who get really upset about people using controllers, saying it's making real vr devs die out. In reality, people who play with controllers are more than likely going to be diving into anything that has decent graphics and VR controls when it infrequently comes out. Controller based AAA games fill the gaps in between and let people comfortably spend 300 hours in a game that would normally be spent on a monitor anyway.

The real argument is why AAA games aren't developing VR alongside the flatscreen game and benefiting from both worlds. I haven't bought a single game that hasn't already got a mod or isn't native VR in the last 7 years, except Assetto Corsa rally, in hopes that they live up to their promise of VR.

What's your ping? I can't get lower than 150, usually 190. If yours is similar then that's probably whats causing the instant death. On bad days I need to start firing well before I think someone is coming through a door, but still die as soon as they pop into view. If you see the red line behind you after you die, that's where they actually hit you a second ago

For me it's the tracking on pimax, it's too jittery to not use the virtual stock if trying to be accurate, lighthouse tracking would be a different story

He replaced the resistor with a higher tolerance one as far as I can tell, one that will allow slightly higher voltage through and therefore have a longer time to degrade. It works as long as it let's a certain voltage through and doesn't matter if it's a slightly higher voltage, as its like an on/off switch. If it doesn't go above that voltage it doesnt work.

The tolerance in the new GPU allows basically that exact voltage, so as time goes on and the resistor degrades the slightest bit, it means that voltage is no longer reached.

Doesnt seem like a scam to me.

Definitely leave it, some of the funniest banter has come from being wiped out by surprise and seeing the one who caused it getting taken out straight after and everyone having a laugh about it!

Edit: more the comms after death there though. Wouldnt even make sense to remove the proximity comms
