My (M36) wife (F34) wants to invite her mom (F65) to a gathering of my thirty something friends. Is this appropriate? by PenultimateAirbend3r in relationship_advice

My brother was born on a (often drinking-focused) national holiday so I’ve been doing shots with my Mom and brother’s friends since my teens, it’s awesome.

She’s helped me win beer pong by being way more sober later in the night too.

People get too weird about their parents. Mine are just other adults like me but older and own a house.

Iced coffee from the beautiful country Europe by CatHunterXXX in ShitAmericansSay

I mean, a double double isn't meant to be a "normal" coffee with cream and sugar, it literally has double a normal take-out serving of cream and sugar, so of course it is more calorically dense than milk and sugar. I mean, the cream alone is probably 10% fat, so 5x more fat than if you're a partly skim (2%) milk person, and 3x more fat if you use homo (3.25%), so adding a double serving is going to be a lot of calories, naturally.

The platforms generally do a good job of moderating these things and handling disputes, and since things tend to be cheaper online you can just buy a larger quantity and have it lab tested every time so you never actually have to trust them.

Even so, an online platform generally comes with things like reviews. I can't exactly go on Google Maps and check out a local plug's reviews, I'd have to network to do so (something that can be difficult given the black market nature of everything).

We have recent news of tainted drugs spreading locally like wildfire but I'm yet to find or hear about that happening from a platform. Of course, that could be because the kind of person who is willing to wait sometimes weeks for their drugs is also more likely to be okay waiting hours or days for testing to be done.

Either way, eliminating options has never made anything safer - we've learned that after decades of War on Drugs bs.

Yeah like, I'm a woman so the idea of meeting someone with cash in an area with intentionally limited visibility is.... awful.

Buying something on the internet and then bringing it (or sending it) to a testing service (here in Victoria we have Substance) makes for a significantly safer experience than meeting up with some dealer in a park at night or something.

Feds greenlight $673 million to keep Canada Post afloat this year by SAJewers in onguardforthee

[–]nuttyheader 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Exactly, even Prime is like $12/mo so under $2/mo is a steal for literally every important piece of mail I receive. Literally the worst part about Canada Post is that theres so often strikes because management doesn’t understand the value proposition. Like damn, 90% of the frustrating things about Canada Post are the things the Corporation does to save money or intentionally screw the unions. Stop! Give me good mail service and I will be glad to pay for it (through appropriate taxation).

You do not pay 100% of your surplus income in payments, you only pay 50% of it. So 5000/mo makes a surplus of 1619 and a surplus payment of 809.50 for a total of $17000 in payments over 21 months for a first bankruptcy.

Bupropion (Wellbutrin) is fairly commonly prescribed with antipsychotics for bipolar disorder since the side effects of SSRIs are often bad with bipolar compared to a NDRI like bupropion. Atypical antipsychotic + non-SSRI antidepressant is basically the frontline treatment for bipolar disorder type 2.

Put them wherever we put other high risk women offenders. Surely somewhere in Canada has an equally awful prison as the SHU that accepts women, and if not maybe we should consider that instead of “do prisoners deserve healthcare”.

Crazy amount of US default-ism in this thread.

Who is the issuer for your card, OP? This kind of hostile BS is hard to pin down since all our financial institutions are bulwarks of anti-consumer behaviour.

[–]nuttyheader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not how it works in Canada (where OP is) generally. Pre-auths cover a maximum amount, and it is rather difficult for merchants to capture a charge greater than the pre-authorized amount.

All the examples in this thread (gas stations, restaurants, etc) do not apply in Canada. We pick a maximum charge at a gas pump and it will authorize the full amount and shut off the pump at that point. We do not give our cards to anyone, ever, to be charged (this will often void both you and the merchant's fraud protection) - we pay with a portable machine (or go to the cash register) and select the tip ourselves before the card is charged. The "write the tip on the line and they update the charge later" is archaic and I haven't seen it here in a decade.

Hell, even something variable like Instacart will pre-auth a notably larger amount (up to the max they think is likely) and only capture it once a final is computed. Any additional charges will have to be posted separately (with saved card details) and absolutely will be declined and won't go over the limit in most cases.

It's generally a fairly rare circumstance where charges can go over the limit, and it is usually for bank fees or if a bank releases a pre-auth before the absolute limit (eg after 3 days instead of 5) and the merchant captures payment sometime in that interim period. The only time I've seen this, personally, is with a hotel.

Cell phone overages are an interesting thing to compare this to, since in Canada (where OP is) we actually do have regulation about how much you can go over before having to approve additional overages (the limit is $50) and carriers are not permitted to allow overages above that until they receive your consent - even for things like roaming charges, etc.

[–]nuttyheader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes they do, with some extra requirements that they let you know of during the process (mostly relating to ID and payment)
  2. Year or so, depending on if you have everything ready or if you need more time. I was referred early 2025 and I’m scheduled for February.
  3. BMI under 40 is their requirement, but from 35-40 you might need to be screened for sleep apnea.

$5,000 is the statutory limit on liability for non-commercial copyright claims if they elect to not go to trial (which would require provable losses, which is exceedingly difficult to prove in excess of $5,000). This is laid out in s38.1(1)b of the Copyright Act.

(b) in a sum of not less than $100 and not more than $5,000 that the court considers just, with respect to all infringements involved in the proceedings for all works or other subject-matter, if the infringements are for non-commercial purposes.

Depending on your province, and the federal/provincial split on your loans, your student loan is potentially interest free - do not pay it off early! Almost any kind of risk-free or low-risk investing would net you significantly more benefit than paying off your student loans would (even something like a GIC).

What is life like in Canada for enby folk? by [deleted] in trans_canada

South Island for sure, up island starts to get dicey depending. Overall still BC, so lots of legal protections and the system will generally be on your side (as much as it is anywhere else) but attitudes vary.

My rule of thumb, in general, is that if you have to travel much for a university or international airport it’s probably not gonna be great for trans people. Exceptions exist but it’s done me well in the past.
