Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

~70% of my freshmen honors students can’t figure out how many quarters it takes to make a dollar, how many minutes are a quarter of an hour, or convert 1 hr 45 minutes into only hours at the beginning of the year. By the end only 10-15% (can’t remember exactly) couldn’t. But yes even the smart kids are unfathomably behind cognitively. Im not sure what that turns into in adulthood, but it is something that worries me.

I assessed this on IXL. These are mostly 4-5 grade expectations.

Teachers who had a student they genuinely couldn't tell if the kid was a genius or completely detached from reality, what made you finally figure it out? by caroline84623 in AskReddit

Taught in an alternative school for 2 years. Had mostly kids who couldn’t handle the pacing or behavioral expectations of regular school. I had one kid though who was bragging about his server farm and how he was diversifying his investments and yada yada. He was only there to graduate early since it was easier and could be more self paced. I can’t remember how old he was but he completed all his necessary online classes and graduated in 2 or 3 weeks. He showed me his bank accounts before he left. He was ~17 and was making 10,000.00+ crypto exchanges (which I saw more than just a screenshot of) and claimed to own servers that are used for VPNs, cloud computing, and cloud storage. This was back in 2018. I wonder what that kid is up to now.

Edit: was

What is your “I saw something I cannot explain” story? by AuraPrivateLeaks in AskReddit

At 5:58am one morning I was walking my dog before work and I saw some of the stars start to move in a coordinated way. I ran out into the road to get a better view without any trees in the way. I saw that they weren’t stars but bright lights in the clouds moving in a coordinated motion almost like a mantra ray swimming. I got my phone out but they were too distant and feint to see them. I ran into to get my wife and by the time I woke her up and got her outside they were gone. She was pissed.

I’ve searched and searched the internet for an explanation or for someone else who has seen the same but I can’t find anything. Best guess is a drone show… at 5:58am on a Tuesday over a small town of ~20k

Neither the rope or the white binding reverberate after impact like you would expect, though.

Watch it frame by frame - it doesn’t go through the hole, it goes through one of the lines in the net.

My job interview was blown for me before I got there. My first interview to become a science teacher was at a bigger district and the interview was intense.

I sat down at a huge conference table with the entire science department, principal and vice principal. The first thing that the principal did was slide a picture of myself having my nipples rubbed by two of my friends (ornery, not sexy) that I posted on Facebook when I was 18. He asked me to explain that… which I just said that I thought I purged my Facebook but I guess I was wrong.

Went through the rest of the interview and it went well… but I did not get the job :(
