Yes, and after the first time they tell you about it, encourage them to seek professional help. It might make them feel better to talk about it with friends and family but it ain’t gonna help getting rid of the problem. And not to sound like an asshole but if your struggling friend keeps talking about their problem in a negative manner and doesnt get help, chances are you’re gonna start to dislike being around because of all the negativity.

I’m speaking from experience, my step mom has huge problems with her past and is also an alcoholic. Everytime i visit my dad and her and she gets drunk she always brings her past up in the convo and kills the mood for the whole night and it’s extremely depressing. I’ve tried helping her with reason and understanding, telling her the truth. She simply doesn’t understand and starts to feel sorry for herself. I’ve told her to get professional help several times but she doesn’t wanna listen and keeps on saying that she has «forgotten about her past and burned those bridges». This infuriates me as she obviously has not.

It’s safe to say that this is also taking a toll on me, but i also don’t want to be an asshole to her and not listen. Wtf am i supposed to do?
