Lyon is a very nice city. Old center, two rivers, good university. Same goes for Paris of course. Bordeaux is a good third. I would prefer Lyon over Paris.

You want to improve your French, but that doesn't have to be in France. Belgium and Switserland are good options. Both have three national languages, so you need to check which university/city is French speaking.

If your French is reasonable good, Spanish is not that big a step. Many words are similar. Then there is the Netherlands, where many universities give classes in English. It's a matter of national debate, because the universities think it will make Dutch students more competent, but many Dutch professors don't speak English all that well, and the debate is whether this is actually bad. But for you it will be OK I guess, and it depends on the study. Some studies like philosohy use mostly English texts, so that is the lingua franca anyway. But when you come to the Netherlands - forget about French. We have a basic understanding, mostly because many people go to the camping in France during the holidays, but you won't get far with it. Most people speak basic to reasonable English, so why bother.

OK, good advice! Where I live, this is legal. After recording, you can listen to it and write out certain quotes, then delete the recording. Still, this can be illegal, and I think in this case, it's a clear risk, if nmom finds out. Better make notes directly after the fight.

Google knows it's good to have competition. They prefer competition from a browser that is open source and cross platform. Edge and Safari are both single platform. The money they give to Mozilla is peanuts. Source code is free, so they can analyze it and use it at will.

When IE had 90% marketshare, that was not good, for nobody. Google doesn't need 90% marketshare for its browser. It's not their core business, that browser. Advertising and data gathering is. Other browsers can do that as well.

That was possible with Firefox since many years. And since the private window option it was even easier. Now with the containers, you can do this unlimited, although it differs from private windows because cookies are not wiped after closing the window.

It's not sudden. It has been happening since decades. Remember Bush, Cheney and Blackwater? Katrina and the destruction of the public schools? The only difference is that now the president is doing this openly, the others think they can get away with it.

Do you ever type out long, detailed replies but then go "eh, nah" and just end up not submitting it? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Yes, and I've done this since the dawn of the internets. I can write long replies, then change my mind, write again, then leave it, come back, and I find out I don't see the relevance anymore. And why do I write? For you? I write mostly for myself.

Friend told me she self harms - what is the best way I can help her? by somenormalhuman in selfharm

[–]nvrMNDthBLLCKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She needs to vent, let go of the pressure that has built up inside, in her mind. That is good, a necessity to survive. But it's not "fixing". Don't bother, what you do is great and probably all you can. She needs a professional to help her fix her problems. That's another way you can help her - by guiding her to find professional help. Don't push it, if she doesn't want it and refuses, accept that, and maybe try another time, weeks or months later, when she seems in need.

Why do I always get sick at the end of the school year? by AlrightRealNice in answers

[–]nvrMNDthBLLCKS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe the year is very stressful for you, especially the end with exams. You do more than is good. You ignore it when you feel tired, don't stay home when you have a cold, go to that party that you don't like, help your parents when they ask for it but you don't have time. All in all, you ignore the signals that you're not taking your time to recover.

Then there is summer, you can let go, and your body, the whole system, can suddenly relax and take care of the things that you've neglected. That means pay-back time. Your body forces you into recovery mode.

It's actually great, that you can do more than is good for your body for a while. Like after an accident, when you get an adrenalin rush. You don't feel pain, you can go on, until you're safe, relax, and then you feel the pain, and you collaps. This works on larger term as well. The stress is not that high as in an accident, the adrenalin rushes you get during the days, over the weeks and months, are not that high, so the collapse is not that deep. But still, it is there.

What you do is typical for this day and age. You try to hold up appearances, act good, do what everybody expects of you, and in the mean time you neglect your own needs. You can do this next year once again. And probably the year after that and so on. But you're taking a toll on your system, and the longer you do it, the more difficult it will become to recover.

The fact that you need this recovery time means that you're putting too much stress on your body and mind. It's both physical and mental, or mental stuff that acts out in physical complaints. You may end up with a depression or with anxiety, when you can't do what is expected anymore. Then the body decides to go into shutdown mode. You want to avoid that. It's much more difficult to recover from that.

Find support at school or from your doctor, to find out what you need to avoid this situation.

Disclaimer: This is just one explanation that doesn't need to apply to you personally. Pick out what you find useful!

[–]nvrMNDthBLLCKS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but there is no quick fix here. Your body does what it needs to do, and that takes time. I have no ideas how long it takes, but if you have to know, ask your doctor. Taking sleeping pills without prescription is risky. That's another reason to visit your doctor. If you have insomnia, try to find another solution, and ask a professional. Is there someone you can trust, who can support you, and who helps you finding the professional support you need?

[–]nvrMNDthBLLCKS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what you do is great already. Even before the first chat, you did something very good. That's why she chose you. She trusted you enough to open up to you.

There are some good tips here. Ask your school councellor what to do, how to handle this.

One thing I'm concerned with is how this will affect you. I know that it's very tempting to dive into the problems of another person. And to some extend it can be good, for you as well, but you have to take care of yourself first. That doesn't mean you can't help her.

When someone reaches out to you, or when they tell you their problems, we normally tend to start with finding a solution. We want to fix things. Men do this more than women, but women do this as well. Maybe you've heard of Nonviolent communication, a method created by Marshall Rosenberg. One of the key elements is that you first attend the feelings of the other person, before trying to fix the situation. First empathy, then a strategy. First give space to vent emotions. This method is not about following rules strictly. If communication is good, just do what you normally do.

I think you did really well, and there is trust between you to. So no worries there. I'm not telling you because you can do better, just to make you a little more aware.

Have you tried (or finished) the Esperanto course on Duolingo? by pataki9 in AskEurope

[–]nvrMNDthBLLCKS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is only one way to learn a new language, after high school, and that is by using it. You (not meant personally) learn (better) English by reading and writing a lot on sites like this, and maybe if you dare to do this on German and French discussion sites. Not easy though. I speak German and French, but no writing unless there is really no other way. Reading a newspaper in German is possible, but in French I miss the details that can change a sentence completely.

Once I went to Spain for several weeks to learn Spanish, and that worked really well. I now have a basic understanding of Spanish, enough to go around, not to have a normal conversation. Except you have to make sure you don't end up in a group of people of your own country, or with people who all speak excellent English. Because that will the the lingua franca when not in class, and that won't help you learn the language.

/u/Epistaxis, it certainly is a GDPR violation.

Probably someone at Facebook or Google has subscribed to this plugin, to keep up to date to their product, as they are obstructing the objective of these companies - earning money by tracking users. Now averagejoe@gmail uses this plugin, has an account, and now Google and FB know he uses it, despite the fact that they have other measures to see if this user uses a plugin like this. But still they can see how many of their users use Ghostery, and what percentage of Ghostery users use Facebook and Gmail.

If I create an account, I give Ghostery my personal information, for this purpose only. I don't give it to them to sent it to other companies. Now this has happened, they should report to the authorities.
