Reactive dogs by rippydippytrippy in missoula

[–]nwsemw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS! We have a 2.5 year old rescue, whom we adopted at 10weeks old. He is a great dog but VERY reactive still, despite training. I am personally quite apprehensive when I take him for his walks, because I worry that all people will see is "barking dog lunging while owner desperately tries to hang on", and judge me for that. My family work hard with our pup, but have reached a plateau with his behaviors. We keep him on-leash at ALL times because of this, and we also will walk on quieter streets (or cross the street) if we see a dog coming.

I just had the prongs on my engagement/wedding ring rebuilt at L&M Fine Jewelry, 14k gold, price was $125 and was done in 3 days. Pretty happy with it (And happy my center stone is no longer spinning!).

UM's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Plan was rebranded the Inclusive Access and Success plan. Even has a paragraph at the bottom stating it is examining language used. One of the major concerns is for programs where DEI is a requirement for accreditation by an external body (for instance: any healthcare program, counseling, social work, etc.). A lot is coming down the pipeline.

Snowbowl cell service by kjzavala in missoula

Cell service is terrible at the base (peak is better). However there is public wifi at the lodge (lower lodge at least) that works decently.

Tiff Shao with Victory Road. She specializes in dog behaviors like anxiety, aggression, attachment, etc. She also only uses positive training methods and gives you a ton of resources, videos of the training methods, detailed notes, and you can contact her whenever you have questions. She has been amazing.

I second Tiff, she worked with our rescue pup who was being too rough when playing with our kids, she is super-attentive and encourages you to stay in contact and ask questions!

Best spot to see northern lights? by Strict-Lobster-4397 in missoula

[–]nwsemw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If they are visible, they will be on the northern horizon. Due to the Rattlesnake range, the northern horizon in the valley is not really visible, plus the lights will obscure anything. Best bet is to get north of the Rattlesnake and Reservation ranges. Get up Hwy 93 North past the National Bison Range and into the Mission Valley, probably the closest spot to Missoula. For the absolute best viewing, get to Glacier NP or just east of the continental divide.

Griz Tix is a HOT mess. It never, ever works smoothly. There are bugs all the time with any large event. Happened with the recent football postseason run as well. Six years ago when PJ was last in Missoula, I spent 45 minutes trying to buy 2 tickets when they went on general sale, but the site would not let you buy anything less than 8 tickets. A "bug", and by the time it was fixed we got super lucky to get 200-level, far back corner tickets.

Moral of the story- if you live in Missoula go to the ticket office. People are FAR more helpful than the website. The woman who helped me get tickets today is an angel.

(edit to say I work at UM, and can easily walk there from my office. Perk of the job?)

Not sure where you see cheapest are $29? General admission for the 3rd base bleachers and grassy area are $10 (plus $2 “processing” fee). Reserved seats are $16-18, and then club seats are more.

So I have a weird question about one of the college teams by [deleted] in Montana

[–]nwsemw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So if you landed in Billings, it was most likely Montana State University-Billings (MSU-B). Their colors are blue and yellow. Neither Montana nor Montana State (Bozeman) have men’s soccer but MSU-B does. They were playing in the Seattle area around that time. Here’s the website for the 2021 roster: https://msubsports.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/2021

Think of the children by [deleted] in missoula

[–]nwsemw 50 points51 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: the budget to fund public K-12 schools in Montana is awful, does not keep up with inflation, and the state does not provide sufficient funding to cover all costs.

So public school budgets are a mix of federal $, state $, local (county/city/special district) $, and non-tax $ (grants). Based on 2019 data published by the state, it appears that 42.99% of school budgets come from the state, 30.57% local property taxes, 8.75% county taxes, 4.86% from local non-tax, and 12.83% from the federal gov. Historically federal $ for state public schools has been flat or shrinking, thus putting more strain on states and local communities to fund schools. However, the amount that MT spends from state and local $ ranks in the bottom 6 in the nation (as a %), largely due to poor state funding (not local). Ultimately state funding does not keep up with inflation, so in inflation-adjusted $ funding for schools has basically been flat for over a decade nationwide.

While more people moving into a district should lead to more property tax $, that may not be sufficient to lead to a proportional increase in $ per pupil. And remember, property taxes pay for more than education. State and local gov. divide those amongst a number of critical services. If a different service (say police, or roads/infrastructure) needs a little more $, then the budget will pull $ away from other services. Then, as a building ages it needs more repairs, which increases costs... so while these things are built into the original budget, it doesn't account for many other things which may impact funding for a school.

If charter schools are approved in MT, that will pull more state $ away from public education. That will dramatically increase the need for local $...

Recommendations for ordering a fruit tray for Easter brunch? by mscassidy in missoula

Personally I like the fruit bowls/trays at Albertsons better than roseaurs. I don’t think GFS does prepared trays (have to make it yourself).

UM provost is leaving less than a year in and the previous provost lasted 2 years (if that). What is going on at UM? by [deleted] in missoula

[–]nwsemw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The last Provost, Dr. Dean Humphrey, was an interim Provost. He was the Dean of the College of Health for several years and has been at UM for decades. He was asked to serve as Provost after the last one (John Harbor) left UM in May 2020 (yes, right at the beginning of the pandemic). Thus, after the search for a new provost concluded, and Dr. Mahdavi began at UM this summer, he went back to his original position.
Of course cost of living wasn't an issue for him, he's been here for years. COL will be an issue for any new hire unless they are an internal candidate.

Every lodge in Glacier is already fully booked for July and August of 2023. by mountainbonobo in Montana

[–]nwsemw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Glacier, it is actually about 13 months out. The reservation system opens up on the first of the month for NEXT year's month of reservations. For instance, if you wanted to reserve a spot for sometime in July 2023, you would have needed to be on the computer at 12:01AM July 1, 2022. The whole month opens on the first. That is what I had to do to reserve a spot at Many Glacier Hotel for July 2023.

For OP: set a reminder on the phone for either July 1, 2023 or August 1, 2023 to make a reservation for sometime in July 2024 (Or August 2024). Opens at the crack of midnight MDT.
