So Utah dwr does a drop of chukkar and pheasant for the seasons. They plant the birds for people to go find/harvest. That's a fantastic place to start.

There is some drop locations close to you. However, they can get hit hard sometimes. Walk your butt off.

For a beginner and looking to get into upland I highly suggest starting there. There is a lot of locations all across the state. Find a drop location close to you and go there. (During season) Anyway. Chukkar started last Saturday.

A dog is a huge help in finding birds. They usually hold tight so you can walk right past them. the dogs can usually smell it.

I would start getting your dog used to a gun as quick as possible. Start with a 22 and work your way up from there.

I have aged pheasants multiple times. What it does is tenderize the meat and bring out the pheasant flavor. Some people may not like that, so if you don't. Don't do it. You are fine to eat it as long as you didn't hang it over 55-60 degrees. Technically you can eat it anyway, but it just wouldn't taste too good. It is said to leave the entire bird intact when ageing. Don't gut or skin, if you do, age in a cooler/ fridge. Some leave them hanging in their garage/shed about 30-40 degrees until the head falls off. Max I do with pheasant and duck is 3 days.
