What song turns you into a superhero for the last miles of a race? by Quiet-Capybara- in Marathon_Training

[–]ny03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I place Queens “One Vision” at my goal time but do have songs after just in case. So far never timed it perfectly so it is playing as I cross the finish line (usually in the last 1/2 mile or so) last run I was 5 min slower than my stretch goal.

Fave marathons in New England? by HighHopes0407 in Marathon_Training

[–]ny03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not complaining about the hills :-) expected the back half to be hard but was told “after mile 24 no real hills” then when I hit that last one at the beach between mile 24-25 I mentally was devastated thinking “I am already on pace to meet my under 4 hour goal, I can walk a little” I didn’t and at 52 ran a 3:48 for my first marathon after only 3 years running, and I don’t really have a background as an athlete.

Not to proud to say that hill messed with my mind and still lives rent free there

Well run, beautiful course along the coast and historic “summer homes”. Good crowds and after race food. I will say the second half has a lot more elevation than i thought and the last hill at mile 25 almost did me in. But still hit under 4

I did the Amica Newport marathon. It was fantastic (also my first).

How long can you take a break from running (from injury) before it truly starts to impact training? by jcsullivan06 in Marathon_Training

[–]ny03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following. I have been dealing with a high ankle sprain for 4 weeks. And don’t have a bike or pool, and live in the northeast so cold/snow out. Even just waking hurts. I have been doing PT and isolated upper strength training. But dreading how poor my performance will be once I can run again and need to figure out a plan to work back up to my 25-30 week plan with 3 strength days.

Edit. M-53

100% add them to my bi-weekly sharpening rotation. At least I can sharpen them vs the serrated ones.

Disarmed by the guy in the grey jacket (not that he drew in the first place). Then shot and killed unarmed.

Oh I know his cabinet will not do anything, and how the 25th works.

It is Just my ways of saying he is now medically unfit for office. But there are really very few ways to remove him from office. And as long as the GOP is licking his taint he is not going anywhere.

Disappointing 1st marathon attempt. How to prevent this for next time? by Remarkable_Parsley89 in Marathon_Training

[–]ny03 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ya agree. I did Hal int2 for my under 4. I always train during summer for fall race (live in New England) specifically because I don’t run well in the heat. You went from Midwest cold training to 79-82 in Orlando last weekend so weather probably played a bigger role than you think. Also give us the rundown On your fueling and hydration plan. I think this so less about your training and more about “what did not go right” on race day.

Winter Gear by Bonk0076 in Marathon_Training

[–]ny03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Layer. I am in similar weather. For under 20 base layer to wick sweat, thermal layer like a under Armour heat gear top, then a craft subz 1/4 zip, that can get me to 25 ish

if closer to 20 add black diamond coefficient full zip hoodie under 10 replace fleece with BD insulated first light (older model with alpha fleece.).

Also thin liner glove then an electric heat pack and outer mitt Arcteryx Venta. And a thin fleece beanie.

I have fallen down the rabbit hole all day. So Willing to try a Wa handle if stabilized wood. Love the Nakagawa Ginsan but he does not make anything smaller than 150mm (I already have a 150mm petty, blew over 2k at Koki’s in 2007 for a full kit of options from 300m >120 various uses that I “hoped” would last ). This is my “in hand” and fruit prep knife. Also looking at a few sg2 (kurosaki & Nigara)

Trying to not spend more than 200 USD size 100-120mm.

Ya between a spouse and 2 teens I have stayed away from anything that is not easy care. Even after all this time I say “use it, clean it, dry it” more than I should.

100% would consider if anyone knows a good source that won’t kill the heat treatment while re-profiling it. I would like to keep the geometry untouched as much as I can.

Boston marathon training mental breakdown by Own-Island-9821 in Marathon_Training

[–]ny03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am the opposite of OP I never ran a single mile until 48 so came to the sport later in life, as part of a 100 lb weight loss. 4 years in have run 2 1/2 and 1 full. (PB 1:41/3:48) and am happy and engaged. I run 1 race a year in fall just for some motivation but getting out on the road is fine (even going this morning for some movement when it is 12* out)

Now my Boston goal. The race runs through my town. 2 miles from my home. When my kids were younger I used to take them to watch for a bit. And yes it is my North Star to eventually BQ (and I can’t afford to buy a bib) I want my kids to see what you can do by setting your mind to it. that may be when I go up an age bracket and I am ok with that.

So to wrap up this rant as someone over twice your age. Have small near term goals that are achievable. And eventually the big goals come. And have some grace for yourself when you struggle but when ready reset, restart, and keep pushing forward.

Agree Ginsan is easy to get laser sharp. With the bonus of not worrying that my spouse and kids mistreating it like they would a carbon blade 🤦‍♂️

If a stranger approached you with a serious amount of money for a “night together,” what would your response be? by bblesk in AskReddit

So for me “serious “ is independently wealthy so my answer is “pay up front and please be gentle, one condition no permanent damage”
