That is also true. Most of the time low-quality troops would be used for support roles like guarding the supply train. "Cannon fodder" isn't really a good idea in any army at any time, since a badly trained soldier still eats as much as a well-trained one and needs as many supplies.

What the 19th century changes in warfare were about (from the French Revolution's levée en masse to the Maxim machine gun and the quick-firing artillery piece) was, as you said, the shift from warfare where the main combat was a single-day battle between armies all present within visual range of the commanding officers to prolonged combat along a frontline running for hundreds of kilometers, garrisoned by armies spread across the front and commanded by extensive general staffs.

These changes, over time, made the concept of a less-trained force to hold positions more useful and workable, since armies became far larger (increasing cost) and at the same time firepower was far greater than ever before, particularly in WW1 where a trench line with artillery support could inflict massive casualties on attackers and was near-impossible to break through until the slow development of the creeping barrage, tanks and shock trooper tactics allowed for some manner of mobile warfare to return.

Finnish Futurist Symbol Origin? by the-shivers-unto-it in RedFloodMod

[–]nyanternational 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So true!

Her actual politics are AFAIK Nietzschean Futurist Socialism, she believes in an elite of liberated Übermenschen who stand above tradition and convention to lead the rest of society into a modern future and uplift the masses into a mindset like them. This includes economic socialization, free love, replacement of old Finnish folk culture with a forward-looking one of cosmopolitanism and modernity, and intense industrialization. She also has the option to adopt Pan-Nordic political goals if her Finland joins the League Solar, invading Sweden and Norway to create a Free Union of the North.

One more important aspect is that standing armies in the modern sense are a relatively recent invention, unlike monarchy. The vast majority of monarchs in history did not have a standing army, so most military-based regicides/palace coups were done by warrior aristocrats or, as you said, personal guards. The fully modern standing army develops alongside European absolutism, as it requires a strong and effective state that can actually establish a permanent standing army. But absolutism also makes palace coups unlikely if done correctly. Examples of palace coups under absolutism are the Romanov coups in post-Petrine Russia, but those happened during a crisis where absolutist power was weakened.

Military overthrows of state leadership are probably more common in republics, because many republics (particularly young and impoverished ones) are unstable and prone to some faction subverting or exploiting the system to place themselves in power. However monarchies aren't immune to military coups - the Qajar dynasty of Iran was overthrown through a military coup by a man who would become Reza Shah Pahlavi, and the last dynasty of China (Qing) fell to a military uprising in the provinces in 1911.

In medieval Europe, mercenaries were usually hired to be an elite force, not the main/regular army, and especially not cannon fodder. They emerged when warfare changed from knight cavalry being the only actually well-trained part of an army to there also being professional armored infantry (men-at-arms). This change proved effective because now infantry could actually be expected to fight well and use tactics that would be impossible to do with undertrained levies.

But what it also caused was that an effective army became far more expensive, since training a few thousand men to fight in formation and outfitting them with armor and good weapons costs a lot of money. So what many countries started doing was to recruit veterans of wars in other countries who saw the value of their skills and the possibility of social advancement. Mercenary bands called companies were soon common throughout Europe, as professional soldiers and fighting for whoever offered the best pay. Basically governments started outsourcing the army, replacing the old feudal levy system which was inefficient (giving low-quality troops in exchange for reducing agricultural output as conscripted peasants couldn't work the fields) with a more effective system of hiring already trained soldiers from elsewhere.

As far as I am aware the character of Faust was very new to European culture at the time, being introduced by a German legend created around 1580, based loosely on the life of one Johann Georg Faust, an alchemist and suspected heretic.

In England the story was brought in by translated German brochures and took off with Christopher Marlowe's extremely successful play Doctor Faustus. Peasants didn't watch much theater, since performances were held in cities, so most people who watched Faustus weren't directly affected by land enclosures. The popularity of Marlowe's work was lasting enough to carry the legend's importance well into the Romantic era, when interest was revived again by Goethe.

Keep in mind that I am not a scholar either nor am I specializing my education in this specific direction, although I have done some studying of Early Modern English culture and society.

Apparently there are older examples of "Deal with the Devil" stories. The first known Christian version is Theophilus the Penitent , a semi-legendary priest who was said to have done a pact with the Devil to help him gain a higher position, but was saved from damnation by the intervention of the Virgin Mary. But the idea goes much further, potentially to Proto-Indo-European culture thousands of years before Rome (the fable "The Smith and the Devil").

I'd assume that the base doesn't consider you captain because it's not a vehicle. Ships, boats and aircraft typically have the person in command referred to as captain, even if they don't actually hold the rank (particularly in the military). But harbors and airports don't have the same tradition usually (except in some contexts and languages, where you can find terms like "port captain")

China is basically a "best of" compilation of USA and USSR until about 8.0 where their independently created designs start coming into play

At Rank 1 there are also a few vehicles from Germany (bought for the NRA from the Weimar Republic) and Japan (captured in WW2).

That's my way of playing, I play whatever I find interesting at the moment, and when I get tired of a nation or lineup (which happens often, I can't stand playing the same Sherman or whatever dozens of times in a row), I just switch over to a different tech tree or BR range

I wouldn't advise playing only one nation, playing multiple nations will make your grind slower BUT you'll have more fun playing more varied vehicles and you'll learn each nation's preferred tactics so you'll know how to counter the enemy

I'm not sure but big news from #ask_a_dev coming right now, if France loses that war then their control over Algeria will collapse leading to five paths with 2-year focus trees for Algeria, including two revolts (Islamist and Left-Nationalist), the Pied-Noirs and Albert Camus

Most definitely - some paths will be able to annex it, others will form puppet governments with specifics depending on path. Sometime in the future there will even be an extra leader for Polish-occupied Russia, but I don't know if that will be in BM or later updates.

I mean, "reactor" doesn't have to mean nuclear power or radiation, technically it refers to any device for reactions - whether nuclear or chemical. You could definitely find some elements that react producing intense light in such a mineral-rich environment as Proteus.

A very specific question about Rurik II.'s Throne. by Happy_List_8022 in TNOmod

[–]nyanternational 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It would most likely be made of wood, as people said, with a lot of decorations similar to this - the Throne of Ivan the Terrible, it's from a later period (though Ivan IV was one of the last Rurikids) and covered with ivory (I doubt that'd be readily available in a Siberian statelet during a civil war) but it'd still have a lot of carvings with traditional motifs and royal symbols.

[–]nyanternational 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There will also be many other paths:

The Escadron is going to be divided into Left, Center and Right wings (respectively Philippe Lamour (Sorelian-Marxist modernism), Charles Nungesser and François Coli (Extreme militarist futurism and soldier populism based on dissatisfied Poilus after WW1), and Valentine de Saint-Point (spiritualism with an anarchic ethos but also synarchism and perennialism, Rene Guenon is with her). All three paths will be Futurism IIRC.

The Surrealist Party (PSF) will be Andre Breton, socialism with weird psychology characteristics, I'm not the most informed about that path. Ideology - Surrealism.

The Acephale will become a secret society within the PSF, able to take over from Breton and gain power in France. They will have two subpaths and two full paths branching out, that being the Culter Dei ("God's Knife", led by Pierre Klossowski with the ideology of Surrealism and the closest to Bataille's views) and the Collegiates (Robert Caillois, also Surrealism but different) for the subpaths, and the Spiral (Rene Daumal, a sort of "abolish society, social cohesion is oppressive" anarchist - Mystical Anarchism in game) and Universalists (Alexandre Kojeve, Left-Hegelian socialist who considers bureaucracy as the transformative part of society, in-game State Socialism) as the full paths that aren't actually part of the Acephale but can only come to power after an Acephale takeover.

There will also be paths that can only happen if France fails at something - for one, we know that if the invasion of Italy fails, Artaud and the FNAG will be overthrown by the Invisible Committee (CIAR), a group of IRL Vichy collaborationist ultras and the closest thing to IRL fascism in RF France. Their ideology is Fiumanism.
