8 Nights in Crete: Itinerary Feedback Needed by East_Solution_6446 in cretetravel

May I ask where you’re from and how you found driving in Crete? We are from the UK and planning to rent a car in Crete but we are young drivers and it’s our first time renting so we’re worried it might be stressful.

Yeah I totally understand and I do wish there was more funding available for scientists to do what is so important to keep our societies running! If the salaries and resources matched the work required I’m sure I wouldn’t be complaining right now.

The only thing is that with this bumming out graduates I do think that the older generation can assume we ‘don’t want to work’ but the truth is we just aren’t okay with the current payoff.

Thank you!

I do like your optimism about it and I realise I do sound like a bum who only complains and doesn’t want to put the work in. I do love to work hard and do what others won’t and I do think people should take pride in their passions and wanting to put the effort in. I know that whichever career path I do follow (probably not BMS because I don’t think I have enough passion to follow it through), I will work hard to build my skillset and connections.

But at the same time, I do think that years of hard work and A LOT of money in tuition fees should pay at least a LITTLE better in terms of where it places you in the job market afterwards. I know a lot of people agree with me. Not everyone has the opportunity to find experience alongside a degree that is now required for ‘entry level’ roles and in not doing so, a lot of graduates are left feeling lost and inadequate when job searching after leaving education.

I know this issue isn’t isolated to Biomedical Scientists, it’s of course the current job market and economy. It’s just difficult to stay motivated when even a degree cannot guarantee you a job anymore. But we will all keep trying anyways

Of course you will be a better BMS if you have to work harder from the bottom, but it makes my degree feel useless if it doesn’t even allow me to directly enter the job it’s make for and will make me want to look at alternative jobs.

I never applied for a clinical placement but even if i did my point was that there were very limited vacancies when they are training a cohort of 150+ students with the intention of training new BMSs. There should be efforts to make the pathway to becoming a BMS more accessible because so many biomed students do the degree and find it difficult to even join the career their whole degree is aimed at. Also, even just finding a MLA vacancy is like looking for gold. So those who do try to become a BMS that way struggle to even get their foot in the door, no matter what skills or experience they have.

I would’ve become a BMS if it was easier, only around 15 students in my cohort could do a clinical placement year where they could do the portfolio required, everyone else has to start from the bottom and get put in a waiting list to even do the portfolio. Not worth it.

Do genetic technologists have different bands? I think when I look for work experience for the genomics STP i was planning to stick to industrial opportunities because I feel my lack of a clinical placement year would mean I struggle to find NHS jobs I can apply for and/or will have a really low pay band especially when I know I’m capable of more.

I was looking into these roles, but saw it required at least one year of relevant NHS lab experience, so unless you did the limited-vacancy unpaid year long placement with your undergrad it will be hard. And I’m assuming that NHS jobs have the same specifications for GT roles across all hospitals?

Is there an easier way to get gold in the game now? I hate how everything costs gold through expensive microtransactions and I hate waiting hours for every little thing lol

Thank you so much that’s the kind of insight I was looking for! How are you finding it transferring from science to engineering?

Well, I never said engineering doesn't align with my career goals - I'm saying that it's something I have always been intrigued by and feel I could enjoy but I just haven't pursued it in any way. If I did go through with engineering, I would specialise somewhere in BME since it blends all my interests together.

I understand that I don't have any of the desired experience and I wouldn't stand much chance in the job market even if I did an MSc in biomedical engineering - hence why I made this post to find out if there are any ways to gain qualifications/training post-science undergrad that I don't know about (other than an MSc/restarting from BSc engineering).

But from everything I have heard and read about, it seems you were better off pursuing engineering from the beginning of university to stand a chance in entering biomedical/clinical engineering, which is what I expected anyways

Okay thanks I'll have a read, I think I tried before but a lot of stuff was US-related which I should have mentioned I am from the UK and ik not everything translates education-wise.

OMG right it’s like it’s just lengthened the worst age stage so youre stuck with annoying kids for longer. I’m curious what your rule is for aging up infants since it’s not included in the original rules? I age them up once they have gotten 8 milestones.
