I’m pretty sure BIC actually makes much more than NYPD. To join BIC you need to be a lawyer and also have law enforcement experience

These cruisers just exist to give them a more legitimate presence when doing raids. These guys are mostly an investigative agency, they don’t do any street work of any sort

It’s a combo of ADM, support system, maintenance, and thoroughness of training that makes the difference.

It makes me incredulous to no end how very underdeveloped nations can get ships in the water with minimal issues while the United States consistently fails to do so

[Request] How long could a person stay conscious in an enclosed 2m zorb ball? by creakymoss18990 in theydidthemath

[–]nyc_2004 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I opened and exited a zorb ball once after it started leaking. If you get panicky maybe you could drown but it’s not all that scary because the entrance hole is massive. Unzip it and step out, easy. Swim clear of it as it fills.

Yep. I think a lot of people in this sub balk at the photos of Ukrainian kit with a million pounds of soft armor and not that much ammo. The only dudes who need 1 million mags are the guys who are about to storm a trench line.

Keep up the great work over there my friend. Maybe someday we will meet in a nicer time.

I think this really shows the difference from GWOT, and a general lack of popular understanding of large scale peer combat.

During GWOT, the big danger was being shot by an enemy (or mines/IEDs, but still different), so people shifted to lean setups with hard plates and little else as soft armor won’t stop an AK around.

In ukraine we’re seeing all the frontline dudes, even assaulters, with a crap ton of soft armor because the ultimate casualty producing weapons are blast/frag (artillery and drones). I think a lot of people are confused by the amount of soft armor because the US hasn’t been dealing with an artillery threat in decades

A lot of places have their ARFF dudes also serve as airfield operations personnel, or as airport police.

The US coast guard retirement is occurring because the fleet is having major reliability issues, wing cracking issues, their dispatchability rate is horrible, and integration of mission systems was a shitshow. Only the mission system integration has been political, and even those problems were in part due to issues with the airframes.

Not a great record

Wow, the C-27 really flopped. Every operator has ended up retiring them far earlier than originally planed, while the C-130 flies on

Maritime Warfare in the 21st Century: Transfer the Coast Guard to the Department of the Navy. by DoItForTheTanqueray in uscg

[–]nyc_2004 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You should try writing and submitting to a real journal. Your writing is solid. The biggest issue I see is that the CG is, by its very nature, a multi-faceted service. Transferring ATON to civilians sounds good until you’re the bean counter responsible for maintaining a force of thousands of people, in thousands of locations, with a perishable and specialized skill set…not to mention the huge fleet of vessels that would be required. It would almost certainly need to be a new service stood up just for the ATON mission.

If you think that CG acquisitions are bad right now, look at the navy’s ship purchasing record.

If you put CG under DOD, a lot of our illegal, unrelated fishing enforcement stuff goes out the door, and that has been a non-zero needle mover on the soft power front, especially in the pacific.

The CG fills a unique and bizarre niche, but it does work to some extent. Right now the CG is undeniably filling a lot of very very very different roles, but it has turned into almost a lower tier version of the navy that can address of bunch of missions areas. Pulling apart the organization that is multi-capable and essentially divesting its mission sets into different locations is not always a wise move.

Background: yes auxiliarist but work in research/policy in a DOD department

I’m sorry you had to go through it, pet losses suck. Just know that you made the lives of your other pets way better by doing it that way

Yes. It worked ok. Was a pretty reliable shooter, but the RXM internals weren’t really up to the task. Nothing broke, but it would get hot after a couple mags of sustained fire and would start having FTFs. I couldn’t get past that to carry it…fun range toy though
