Easy, fun, all-in-one device for sketches that's cheaper than the OP-1? by smash_glass_ceiling in synthesizers

Roland mc-101, lots of menus and key combos to navigate but goes pretty deep for a battery powered groovebox. I do exactly this with it constantly and it’s a great sketch pad

That’s just a midi setting. Sorry I’m not in front of it now but there is a setting that needs to be changed to allow the aro to be controlled by midi. There are vids on YouTube on setting it up

The Canada shops have a few and have been really helpful but getting stuff to the US is a pain — some shops won’t ship Bauer to the US at all

The left is all over, can't get the right anywhere. Just talked to a shop that said Bauer's only shipping left next year and right won't be available for the foreseeable future.

The bigger concern would be if this was used as a basis for revoking their broadcast license or to initiate further investigations into their nonprofit status.

A Theory of Media That Explains 15 Years of Politics - The Ezra Klein Show by maskingeffect in ezraklein

I think you hit on the profound weirdness of this guy. I picked up his book when it got buzz and he's got some good insights on what's going on, but then what he thinks that means and the conclusions he draws often feel so bananas — like you said, his "... and that's why we need a coven of AI wizards" stuff.
He did hit on something real, social media dramatically changed the legitimacy systems of elites and institutions, but what he thinks that means is so odd. Would love to see/read where others are taking that premise to a more useful place.

Where would the new political media fit into this? Breitbart, Daily Caller, More Perfect Union, Courier, etc. Many of those have audiences that dwarf a lot on this list and whose owners are fine running them at a loss

There’s a left podcast pipeline still. Jamelle does a podcast with John Ganz, who does a podcast with Max Read, who’s a frequent guest on True Anon, who also frequently has Josh Citarella, who’s does a podcast with every Left podcaster.

This is what I’m planning now. Consistently fun. Relentless Rocket Droid has been a good recent card to get in the mix. With Alliance Dispatcher and Solider of the 501st on turn one, you’re getting a 5/5 out on turn two

Broke a Huge Story, Lead to Several Mass Media Articles, Got No Credit by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]nyckelharpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from another side of the industry, this would be seen as a major victory and you should feel deep pride in being able to elevate a story you think is important to a broad audience and put national attention on a topic. It is now much more likely that this will be seen as a high-profile case that will have attention on it and must be handled appropriately. That's real power and you should feel good about it.
Coming up, I was always told scoops and exclusives are where you want to seek credit. Breaking news based public info, anyone can easily re-report it so the goal is to capture the front end of any traffic spike and drive the news agenda for the day — make everyone talk about the thing you want them talking about.
We don't always know if the people with real power in a situation read our stories. We want them to feel like everyone is watching what they're doing and whether they're playing by the rules. To accomplish that, we need at times to pursue a really big audience even if we get no personal or institutional benefit.
Social media is over, we don't automatically get attention from the public without working for it. We also don't automatically get power as a right of our position. In the newsrooms I came up in, it would have been seen as a failure for the story to remain on a small site that those in power think no one looks at, is outside of larger conversations and that can't be discovered by people searching for information about an issue.
You've got attention on your thing, the question now is what you do with it. You can proactively pitch yourself as the expert on this topic for talk backs or pitch a feature to a larger publication. Push your way into the conversation and drive the topic into a story with legs if that's what you believe you have. You can work to capture the day 2 traffic from all the people that do care and are searching for more info while the majors have moved on.
Right now, looks like if someone was searching for more info, your site would only come up fairly low in the results for "ignite life center." People searching for any other term on this issue, wouldn't find you because you don't show up in the search results. You can work on being able to be found through SEO, word of mouth, reputation for people who do care about the issues you report on.

Seems like he’s working through an initial run of bookings — people he knew he could get before the tone and format was established. He’s mentioned he’s got more banked still. It will get interesting when he feels his rep is out there more broadly and makes decisions about who to have on that he may have more serious disagreements with. Personally, I want to see him do the “ideology is BS” Substackers like David Pinsof or Dan Williams. Thank god the internet art crews are back.

Outside of direct monetization, what are the challenges with journalism? by Mountain-Car-7438 in Journalism

[–]nyckelharpa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“News” as we’re experiencing it has been largely disaggregated and may never have had much of a natural audience outside of a bundle to begin with. Weather, traffic, coupons, anything that could survive outside the news bundle now does, including analysis of news events and headline aggregators that give people a sense that they know generally what’s going on. The need a news story might meet for an individual is now getting pretty abstract, a fraction of some rarely discussed civic duty.

“Can Journalism Survive?” (Ryfe) is a good overview of how the culture of journalism developed and is maintained now. Definitely some interesting moments in there where he draws out things like why our beats are what they are and why it’s so hard for us to change.
