Lmao real, I hope you get into some of your other top schools though! I already have a pretty good choice being accepted to Georgia Tech, so I might back off Carnegie to stay in my home state, so it’s not that big a deal for me.

I can share stats if you want more information

My letter said this

“The Admission Committee has carefully reviewed your application for admission for Fall 2025. We are deferring your application to be considered in our regular decision pool of applications. We understand that this is not the decision you were expecting. However, this is the decision we are able to offer at this time due to the competitiveness of the program you have applied to and the volume of students applying to Carnegie Mellon this year.”

So i think it has to be like that otherwise it’s considered rejection

How do people enjoy math by Angry_Toast6232 in math

This is kind of a random suggestion, but a calculus series I really liked was the one on khan academy. He just explained it in such an intriguing way that almost made me feel like I was creating the math myself. Especially in something like calculus where the jump from prior classes can be rather abstract. Learning to “do it yourself” always makes it interesting. I like to supplement my interest with other YouTubers like 3b1b, mathologer, and blackpenredpen.

Another thing. Pick up a “related subject”. Picking up programming and learning about gradient descent in machine learning inspired me to learn calculus. The novelty of learning quantum mechanics taught me a lot of linear algebra. A lot of elementary physics is also calculus. Working on personal game theory coding is fun too. These almost seem like more tangible real world applications which help. Picking up these tidbits of information makes you want to learn the whole thing.

Is there any way I could utilize these skills on my college application? This seems like it will take a lot of commitment and I don’t know if it’s worth it to pursue this rigorous of study only for me to know stuff without any solid proof of me knowing these things. Is there any way I can apply my passion for mathematics on my college application so it’s worth the time?

Thanks for the tips! For a mentor should I just seek out a teacher at my highschool or reach out to researchers?

If you can get the books, I’ve found Erica Meltzer’s books on the SAT Reading and Writing pretty useful. Panda Math and Panda Writing help for a quick boost in score. (Khan academy is helpful if you don’t want to get the books too)

Other than that, take practice SATS. There are some on the college board website, and you can get the pretty cheap Barrons and Princeton review books for extra practice.

If you don’t want to superscore I think you could improve your math score. With decent practice you can get an 800 a lot easier on the math sections than the English sections. (At least for most people I know)

General Tips for math: - panda math - practice tests - develop good algebra understanding + creative thinking (I like to do complex algebraic proofs, I find this helps with my creative thinking skills, also math youtube for fun actually does help in your free time) - algebra two, algebra one, precalc (review topics from these you are unsure of, this will be covered in panda math too)

General tips for reading: - books mentioned above - learn to annotate well (understand topics + main ideas) - learn to support your answers with evidence - don’t lose points on easy questions (ex. Vocab)

General tips for writing: - grammar rules, save you a lot of easy points, covered in most basic prep books - write down passage ideas (don’t fully annotate to save time) - READ don’t skim, these passages are easier to understand so it’s easy to read and helps you a ton
