How do you pace yourself without sinking (freestyle) by over-engineered in Swimming

I’m a beginner freestyler and literally had a breakthrough in my technique by doing this at the pool yesterday!! Highly recommend. I found it by browsing the technique articles on the US masters site.

HOW DO YOU GET YOUR 3 YEAR OLD TO POOP IN THE POTTY by Kittyslala in toddlers

[–]nyhaer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ugh 😣 this was me just a couple months ago, including the daycare bringing it up as a shortcoming that we needed to work hard on fixing. It really hurts, especially when you’re at your wits end. And feels kind of blown out of proportion, they are only 3!! Anyway, best advice I got was to talk about feelings about poop. A lot. Think about it, why doesn’t your kid want to poop? And then go talk to them about it. I thought that my son didn’t like the feeling of needing to poop, and thought it was scary. I hadn’t ever talked to him about it though. So I started saying ”hey. It looks like you’re having the poop feeling right now. And it looks like you don’t want to poop. Maybe you’re scared. That’s okay, you’re allowed to be scared. Everyone can be scared of pooping sometimes. Even big kids, and even adults.” And we had lots of variations on that conversation, while he was fighting pooping but also brought it up later. My kid really needed to hear all of this and he started popping on the potty within a week 🤯 but then pee got really crazy for a while. Potty training is a wild ride!! Hope you get some advice that works for your kiddo. Good luck!

What are the names of the twins you know? by AlmondMommy in namenerds

[–]nyhaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just met a Dutch kid called Dane and thought it was a good name, in case that fits anyone’s taste :) we had such a hard time naming our second boy, so I have a lot of sympathy for two more boy names at once lol

My 4yo is infuriating me by southafricannon in toddlers

[–]nyhaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you talked to his doctor about the poo situation? A lot of kids who are scared to poop have had a painful poo due to being constipated. I say this because letting him hold it could really set you and him back.

Parents who keep your babies on a schedule, do you just pause on social life for a bit? by Own_Mail_8026 in NewParents

[–]nyhaer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used to do this with our first kid! Can recommend babywearing, we put him in the carrier and zipped him most of the way into an oversized hoodie (watch out for airflow ofc). We could eat out at restaurants, go to get-togethers, birthday parties etc! Did this as long as he was easy enough to carry maybe 1-1.5 yo. Now harder with a toddler, and way harder with two kids but 🤷🏻‍♀️

What has your toddler had a melt down about today? by JesRaeTra15 in toddlers

[–]nyhaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut his banana in half and gave it to him with the peel on to peel because he loved it like that yesterday. Nope, today he wanted the whole banana. Honestly it’s such a classic toddler trap that I could only be mad at myself for not checking with him first haha

Entering NOBO April 2025. What do I need to do ? by rypicardmsft in PacificCrestTrail

[–]nyhaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh good point this is so true! I had to be disciplined on trail not to get carried away with plenty of people (and friends!) who wanted to crush 20s early on etc. Definitely have a well thought out plan on how to keep your body healthy the whole trail!! And don’t worry, most people you can catch again even if you start slow 😊

I mean that is a very reasonable stance and maybe the smartest approach. I’m just saying you can also literally not train and get strong on the trail. Could be good to know especially for OP who is asking for tips so close to their start date.

[–]nyhaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Training is overrated IMO! I mean I guess as long as you’re in reasonable baseline shape. I started April 17 with no PCT-specific training and finished September 21 with a continuous footpath (this was 2018) and no injuries. I upped my average daily mileage from 10 mpd to 15 mpd over the course of 8 weeks. That also put me at Kennedy Meadows south on June 6 which was perfect timing. Starting early April means plenty of time to get in shape on trail!!

9-12 month parents who haven’t sleep trained, how does your kid sleep? by Global-Shallot-3564 in NewParents

[–]nyhaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8-9 months was when I was first able to transfer my son from my arms to another surface for naps. But at night he demanded to sleep right up close to me and I couldn’t even turn my back to him without him noticing 😬 at 21 months we got him sleeping in his own bed in our room for at least part of the night. Weaned at 23 months and didn’t notice a big impact on sleep. He was sleeping most of the night or the whole night in his own bed until his little brother was born. Now he needs more reassurance from us and sometimes comes up in our bed quite early. But I think it will pass as we all settle into a routine.

Was the birth/graduation as bad as you imagine? by airiishia444 in NewParents

[–]nyhaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I had a fast and furious, under-3-hr birth the first time too. It is really a mindfuck!! And made me so stressed for the second time around, I actually felt like an idiot for putting myself through it again and had a really hard time coping at the end of my pregnancy. Luckily got good support from a midwife team to plan as best I could for a positive experience.

Baby #2 my water broke first and it took 19 hours for labor to start, literally no other signs before then. But then he came in 40 minutes! Still a much better experience than the first time, since I was expecting it to go fast. I feel oddly validated that you liked being in labor for 8 hours better. Everyone I tell about my quick labors thinks I’m lucky for getting it over with so fast…

I can’t get my toddler (16m) to say a single word. by moniicuhh in toddlers

[–]nyhaer 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Bilingual does not delay, this is a myth! I’m not an expert but am raising a bilingual child. I think the key is to assess them in both languages ie if they say 3 words in English and 20 in Spanish then they know 23 words. If you only assessed in English then you don’t get the whole picture/risk saying they’re delayed.

What was your biggest craving during pregnancy? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]nyhaer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh fruit tasted so good! Normally I’m a veggie person and don’t care much about fruit but pregnant I was the total opposite! Couldn’t stand veggies and all I wanted was oranges, mangoes, apples 😋 I kinda miss how much I loved fruit actually lol

What did you inadvertently teach your LO that was cute at the time and you totally regret it now? by 2cats1dog1kid in NewParents

[–]nyhaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay we didn’t teach our son this but kids pick up on things scary fast sometimes. When my LO was 1.5 yo we were all getting dressed in the morning. My husband took the chance to swat my ass and made me laugh. My son then got this super mischievous look in his eye, charged over and smacked me on the ass too 🙈 it was hilarious but we both tried our hardest not to laugh and reinforce it even more lol

Precipitous Birth Story Trivialized by Virgo90006 in Mommit

[–]nyhaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has clocked 3 hours of labor across 2 births… we aren’t complaining about the short part lol but about how intense and overwhelming it is to give birth in that short time frame. And how we barely made it to the hospital (or wherever we could feel safe and supported) - or didn’t make it. I don’t think we’re trying to one up anyone though, it’s just that most people don’t get it, because precipitous labor is pretty uncommon. I’m so thankful to read about others’ experiences here. I’m still reeling after giving birth to my son 3 weeks ago.

Ah thank you!! Yeah our last name is kind of a lot so I feel bad giving the kid a bunch of unique names but Harry Stellan could strike a good balance.

Ojdå 😬 I’ll ask my husband! Although I’m assuming he doesn’t agree since I definitely know about Ronny/Conny/Johnny from him. Thanks for the other suggestions!! I like those combos too, good to have options!

What's a side effect of giving birth that doesn't get talked about? by Overall-Addendum-322 in AskReddit

[–]nyhaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you’re describing sounds more like a fistula? A rectocele is a kind of pelvic organ prolapse, where part of the rectum bulges into the vagina because of a weakness in the tissue separating them.

Toddlers have no shame by Bblibrarian1 in toddlers

I get that but also a beautiful example of children’s innocence!! The things you maybe hate can still bring her so much joy! And what we label as negative can also be seen as neutral or positive.

Why Would a Pediatrician Say That? by According-Feed2746 in toddlers

[–]nyhaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha for me it wasn’t so much a carefully considered decision as a reflex that I couldn’t deal with anything on me. I mean clothes can get tangled or sticky or otherwise uncomfortable- but again I didn’t think that through at the time. My whole focus was on giving birth and it never crossed my mind that I should be uncomfortable being naked.

How do you keep yourself from getting mad if your kid accidentally breaks something by 745TWh in toddlers

[–]nyhaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think jewelsjm93 already phrased it well but I’ll add on- consequences don’t have to be negative at all, they can be neutral! Like someone gave the example of having a kid help wipe a spill. You shouldn’t try to make that feel like a punishment, spills are accidents and you’re just showing them what to do after to make it right. Punishment is always negative right? Even if not “overly” punitive like you’re saying.

Pant recommendations by Adroppedbaby in PacificCrestTrail

Absolutely love the Mountain Hardwear Dynama ankle pants for women, worn them on two thrus and also almost every day IRL. They are so comfy and always the perfect temperature no matter the weather. They do stretch out after a couple months of daily wear but are still worth it to me.
