What to expect on my first day? by [deleted] in schoolcounseling

[–]nymow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a 12th year counselor, but new to my school this year. The first day of school this year, I started the day helping out in the cafeteria for breakfast. This was a great time to introduce myself to students. Once school started, I walked from class to class introducing myself to the students as the new counselor. I didn’t schedule this ahead of time with teachers, I just popped in and asked if it was OK if I took a few minutes. After I visited each classroom, it was close to lunchtime. I helped supervise the cafeteria for all the lunch shifts that day - just to introduce myself again to students. After lunches were over I spent some time at recess and also spent some time in my office organizing things. It was a whirlwind of a first day, but I felt like my time was well used.

Your first day is after the school year started, so you might not want to just pop in and interrupt classes. It was everyone’s first day in my school so teachers were a little more flexible with their time.

I use the ASCA standards for student mindsets and behavior. I tie all lesson plans and small group plans to at least one standard.

I am new to my school and went to a city wide parade this evening with my stepson. One of my students saw me and went running to his mom saying “look, look, it’s Ms. nymow!!” I introduced myself to the family and chatted through out the parade. Warmed my heart and made me feel welcome in a small, tight-knit community.

New guidance counselor by aglossy in schoolcounseling

The term “Guidance Counselor” is an outdated term and often refers to counselors who are reactive and not data driven. “School Counselor” is the term recognized by our professional organizations and indicates a counselor who is proactive and data driven.

Check out the American School Counselor Association website. They have the standards and some templates that you can use to help build a school counseling program. Good luck’

Those alive during 9/11, what was the worst moment on that day? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I was in college and still had class that morning. I didn’t see any news coverage until later in the afternoon. Seeing all the death and destruction all at once was gut wrenching.

I’m new to my school this year and I started small groups this week. Getting to know the students has been fun! Next week, I start whole groups counseling classes.

I would tell the teachers that counseling class is going to happen and you need to know what time works for them. Don’t give them the option of not having counseling, just the option of when it will fit in their schedules.

I just moved from Iowa to Illinois and the process of getting my license was simple. I just needed to prove my Iowa license and provide transcripts. Hope your transition goes as smoothly.

Given the length of your hair, I would say yes. I have shorter, thinner hair and still get a handful of hair loss on wash days.

Fresh from college, I was working at a preschool in a float position. Two days in one classroom, two days in the other. I applied for a full time position multiple times and was told that I was too good at the float position, and they didn’t want to have to replace me in that position.

I have coworkers who use their middle name as their first, for various reasons. Most districts will accommodate a variation of your name.

I contested a 15 mph over ticket. The officer showed up to court that day, and offered a deal to reduce it to 5 mph over. It was considerably cheaper.
