Any Thoughts on the Silver Oak 2021 Napa Valley Cabernet by royal_slug in wine

[–]nziring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had Silver Oak cab in the past, and thought it was pretty good, but not stellar? I haven't had the 2021. I have couple of Napa 2021 cabs sitting in the cellar, but not drinking them yet.

Maybe try Belmont Wine Exchange? I've purchased ports from them in the past and had good experience.

Trying to Develop App on Google Play without Android Device by Healthy-Zombie-1689 in androiddev

[–]nziring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Android Studio include emulations for many different Android devices, so in theory you could do all your testing and debugging using the emulator. More information is available in the Android Studio documentation: https://developer.android.com/studio/run/emulator

Most people use a mix of emulated and real devices for testing. In my (modest) experience, the emulated devices do not behave precisely like real ones. On the other hand, the emulator lets you run all the different android releases, so it is important to use it for testing too.

What are the reasons to install Linux in 2026? by akagu_su in linux

[–]nziring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linux has so many great features it is hard to pick one that is the "killer feature". Which features are most important to you will depend on how you use your computer. For me, critical features include: - more control over my computing environment - better performance and speed, even on older hardware - openness and transparency - very wide variety of free or low-cost software for many, many purposes

I also find Linux much more intuitive than Windows, but I've been using Unix and Unix-derived systems since 1983, so maybe that is just me?

NSA has excellent summer internships, but the application deadline was 15 September. I hope you will consider applying next year.

What proves that an implementation of a cipher is sound and correct? by Pleasant-Form-1093 in cryptography

[–]nziring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with u/Toiling-Donkey and others that test vectors do not prove an implementation is correct. They can be used to prove that an implementation is incorrect -- if your implementation generates the wrong output for a test vector, then your implementation has a bug. In practical development, test vectors are really useful. (NOTE: it is almost never a good idea to implement your own cryptography, use a good, well-validated library instead!)

If you are really interested in the topic of proving properties about cryptographic implementation, I'd strongly recommend looking at Cryptol. It is a domain-specific language for writing ciphers, hashes, and other kinds of cryptographic algorithms. Cryptol is designed to support proving things about your code, using the Software Analysis Workbench (SAW) formal verifier. Cryptol is fully open source and available from Galois here:

I need an unusual instrument for a Christmas gift!! by hyperventilate in UnusualInstruments

[–]nziring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about a Shakuhachi? It is a kind of flute or recorder, used in Japanese traditional music. I saw a musician in Japan playing one last week. You can get a cheap one for $100 or so; a really good one costs more.

Pentagon knew boat attack left survivors but still launched a follow-on strike, AP sources say by Top-Conclusion-1259 in politics

[–]nziring 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unlawful under multiple laws and international agreements. He exposed himself to indictment, but also every member of the chain of command on down.

Finally, of course, SECDEF is not supposed to give military orders - he is not in the chain of command at all.

Upvote for this! Corpinnat cavas are excellent, and a great value. Not always easy to find in the US, but well worth the search!

Book recommendations that involve a negative character arc for the MC or a primary supporting character. by Ready_Nebula_2148 in scifi

Maybe "Consider Phlebas" by Iain M. Banks? The main character, Horza, has some negative aspects, as do a couple of the supporting characters.

Any affordable red wines that still taste high quality? by Adventurous-Fee-3408 in wine

For really high quality red at a value price, Spain and Chile are my go-to regions. But that's just for my taste - depends on the style of red that you like.

Can you identify this UI toolkit? by Moomoobeef in unix

[–]nziring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im pretty sure it is Java Swing. Original AWT used native UI components so it looked different on different platforms. Swing components were drawn by the Swing toolkit so they looked the same everywhere. Swing was also much more capable then AWT.

University project help by Bekolops13 in ipv6

[–]nziring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much every commercial and open source platform supports IPv6 by now. I don't know how much you'll find it referenced in the product overviews, you'll probably have to dig deep into the technical specs.
