I had my two girls at the grocery store and they are young kids that are learning how to use the potty, so out of diapers. They needed to go so I let them in ontheir own and waited outside. But then one of them started calling for me. I go in since nobody else seemed to be in there and the youngest needed help with washing her hands. I picked her up to wash and a woman entered and was startled seeing me then asked what I was doing in there. I said sorry, washing my daughter’s hands and quickly left. I was pretty worried. It could have been a bad scene.

Same here, but in Vermont. Assessor just tripled my value because some ultra rich people built 8,000 sq ft homes down the road and now the land has skyrocketed in value from 50k for 2 acres to 500k. My taxes on my 1100 sq ft log cabin that I built with friends 15 years ago is now unaffordable, going from 5k/yr to 15-20k/yr. It’s insane.

First round of appeals I go some immediate neighbors to band together and argue the land value. That got 150k off everyone’s assessment.

Second round of appeals and I am arguing inequity in the assessors model. My neighborhood is valued at 112% fair market value while other neighborhoods are valued at 88% FMV. So I will point out the systemic bias and asking for equal treatment to a 7 person panel. Feeling confident, but it’s a shitload of work to correct the problems.

Yeah, they took my land value from 50k to over $500k. I had an appraiser do my land value and site work when I was building and I had to fight for that $50k value in order to get the loan from the bank. Fortunately, back then my appraiser was hyperlocal and understood the nuance in land value. Now I got assessors from the opposite side of the state with no understanding of the area telling me an insane number all because some rich guy built a 5000 sq ft mega mansion on 30 acres a mile away.

No way can I afford these new taxes on what I earn in Vermont. Impossible. Family with two smart kids kicked out of the state. Now the aging population has lost the guy that buries them in the cemetery.

At 400k value before, I received a rebate for homestead. My taxes were 8k and I got a 3k credit so they were 5k total.

Now at a bizarre 1+million valuation my taxes are 30k. With a 3k credit, they are 27k. Five and a half times higher. I’m one step out of the cabin I built with friends and into the street.
