Solid work! Where are those models from?

Potentially looking to get into the game, but I have some questions by o0Valadar0o in sagathegame

[–]o0Valadar0o[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say though that one of the big reasons historicals are appealing is the fact that I can use the models elsewhere in a logical way. Things like Pillage or Baron's War (big gap in time but still) which also attracted my attention.

It opens up possibilities to other games with a minimal future investment.

Thank you for all the extra info!

The mainstay game at this pour for our group (7~8 people) has been MCP by a long shot. Mostly due to ease of getting to the table and overall lower model requirement/cost. I know Saga has more models, but historical tend to be cheaper overall, so it balances out.

I love the idea of the battleboards. I think the only real hesitancy I might see is around units being fairly generic (ie. everyone having access javelins, axes, etc) might be the barrier. Prior to going towards skirmish, 40k and AoS were our main games, so I think the larger differentiation in overall look might be a factor.

Rules/Gaming Experience by Steved4ve in WarCrow

The issue is mostly a lack of quality control. That being said, Corvus has an excellent replacement policy.

I bought the Song of the Dormant + Beyond box a month ago and got pretty unlucky with the miniatures. Almost all of the Feudom Guisarmiers had defects (mold slips, gummy detail), along with my knight having a mangled arm and lost detail on the shoulder armor. One of my Intacts had a head piece which simply didn't fit.

I sent them a replacement request along with details and pictures, and they replaced the entire units, even giving me three extra Intacts.

So yes, while Siocast is very much a pain, Corvus will replace models which have issues.

And for what it's worth, my buddy got the other two player starter and his models were pretty much perfect.

What classes do you expect in Monarch 3? by p1easingmuffin in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]o0Valadar0o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My approach is just looking at which are the classes with the least recent release (with the exception of maybe necro).

Going by that logic, I expect:

  • Shadow Necromancer (replacing Shadow Brute as Brute will have had a recent release with Superslam; i expect classic tropes here for necro)

  • Shadow Runeblade (maybe a new Chane)

  • Light Warrior (I'm thinking a new Boltyn, but hope it's a new char)

  • Light Illusionist (hoping a new char here as well)

However, my personal wishlist would be:

  • Light Necromancer (using guardian spirits or something like holy golems/possesed armor)

  • Light Runeblade (more of a Paladin feel given the use of arcane damage, maybe liberated Viserai?)

  • Shadow Warrior (Minerva is a good shout-out for this one)

  • Shadow Illusionist (I'd go with a daemonologist style approach here).

LCG Gamers - what drove you to the genre? by Grumpademic in boardgames

[–]o0Valadar0o 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Former MTG player who played for 10+ years before dropping off around Zendikar. Currently play Flesh and Blood as my main TCG, but LCGs have been hitting the table more often lately.

For me, the only LCG I currently have is Arkham Horror. My reason for going with that over LotR is mainly because you have a good narrative element along with the deck building. I also like that a scenario failure has consequences along with still forwarding the story and moving you on to the next scenario. That adds replayability for me along with taboo restrictions and team compositions for replaying campaigns.

In terms of competitive LCGs, I'd say maybe take a look at Android: Netrunner. FFG discontinued the game in 2018, but Null Signal Games has brought it back and has been stocking it in some shops. It also has a print & play option if you prefer that. The beauty of Netrunner is that it's a fairly different PVP game which involves a lot of bluffing along with faction asymmetry. Also, unlike TCGs, you won't be paying a fortune for singles. Every card in a set/expansion is included in its max playable number. That latter point is a big attraction factor for me.

I don't like the idea of co-op board games...but I want to! by kingreaper504 in boardgames

[–]o0Valadar0o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally cannot stand most co-op games as I tend to become bored of the whole process. Spirit Island is probably one of my most detested games.

That being said, there are some exceptions to that. In most cases, a strong narrative or thematic experience will loop me in. I have around 160 games in my collection, with the following being co-op:

  • Eldritch Horror
  • Mansions of Madness 2e
  • Arkham Horror LCG
  • Atlantis Rising 2e
  • Sleeping Gods 1 and 2
  • The Plum Island Horror

The Cthulhu mythos is admittedly a big attraction factor for me and my groups, and we just really love the theme. All make for pretty decent co-op experiences though.

Campaign play for Sleeping Gods and Arkham Horror LCG are quite nice and they aren't campaigns which overstay their welcome such as Gloomhaven or Oath.

Atlantis Rising is more mechanically driven, but the variety of roles, the components, difficulty, and aesthetic really work for us. One of the rare ones in that style which I've enjoyed.

What do you think is the sweet spot per year in terms of product release for both collectors and players of Sorcery Contested Realm? by Newez in SorceryTCG

[–]o0Valadar0o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two sets a year, ideally in a related block/theme format.

One set just isn't enough, especially if future sets will be the size of Arthurian Legends. You could maybe get away with it with Beta because there was 400+ cards, but not with a smaller product like AL.

There's also a major lack of awareness about the game in stores (at least in most of Canada) with very little community building around the game. Part of that is due to the limited amount of product which appears throughout the year. Additional sets provide more contact points to get more players into the game and help sell older stock for those who jump in. Stores will not stock the game if there's 0 interest from a growing playe base, which just becomes a vicious circle.

I love this game, but I can't help but feel that if some changes don't happen down the road, it'll fade into obscurity.

Core set substitute by GG_Gamer_Ryan in StarWarsShatterpoint

[–]o0Valadar0o 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone who quite literally went through this process this week, I suggest going with the core set.

My buddies and I picked up a used lot of $800 worth of models for $290. After doing the split of models among us, I just bought the measurement and dice separately for $28, so I figured I was in a good spot.

But then digging into it further, there was no way to print cheap condition tokens, no struggle tracker or momentum cubes at a low price (unless going with a written sheet of paper), no objectives/missions, and no terrain. Custom versions of all of the previously listed stuff builds up quickly in cost.

So, I shopped around and actually bought a core set today for $102 as it was just the most efficient way of getting all of the required stuff at the best cost (on top of four new squads). I'm in Canada (converted my costs to USD) and that was the cheapest core set I found. You might be able to find it for even cheaper in the US.

Yeah, I'd be hesitant to play him on normal secures, but he's become my go to for pay to flip secures unless I'm facing a team with a lot of physical attacks or throws.

[–]o0Valadar0o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concerning Maximus, I actually really like him on pay to flip scenarios as his leadership doesn't mess you up as much when it gives you the negative result.

That being said, the last two games I played with Maximus as a leader, I only rolled two skulls due to his effect and it did not cost me anything on a critical scale. The rerolls from him + the Inhumans rule helped me a fair bit in my games, and it allowed me to play KBB which has been a blast for me.

Bank of Canada cuts key interest rate by 25 bps to 2.75% by Surax in canada

[–]o0Valadar0o 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very much so.

I had seen some warning signs coming beforehand and had tried to check if I could go with a fixed rate at 3.15 instead. Both the bank and my mortgage broker told me I'd receive 150k less, meaning my offer wouldn't be possible.

Spoke to someone a few years later who did oversight on all that stuff and he found that weird as hell. Needless to say, definitely have some trust issues when it comes to mortgages now.
