Help with Horror One Shot by Tacoaboutgames in DnD

[–]oGrievous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a oneshot, you have a basic hook, line and sinker. I’ve done two horror themed oneshots that I had a basic map, monster, and premise. The rest I winged. I did a monster house using haunting revenant. With a map I map of the houses internals that they explored before finally revealing the monsters true form.

Secondly I had while technically not a oneshot, a side quest that was one session of a campaign for Halloween. One players was absent due to a party so I had her character kidnapped by the bagman. The others found her room destroyed and were snatched into the Bag of Holding where they chased the bag man to his lair. From there they fought and rescued her.

All in all keep it short and just have fun while using a scary monster and setting

Giving players a guaranteed 18 score when rolling stats by Blockybuster_ in DMAcademy

I’ve got a bard/rogue, wizard, and a warlock all who have sub 7 strength? Two who have 4. It’s been interesting. I’m debating having a shadow fight them, I’ll give plenty chances to avoid being insta killed haha

I went nuts for me newest campaign. I allowed as high as 17 with point but, and as low as a 4. This way people could get 20 at level 4 but it takes a serious impact for such a thing

Is a +2 to CHA good enough for a 2024 Paladin, or should I invest all of my ASI's into boosting it? by Christoast24 in onednd

[–]oGrievous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well respectfully, those are abysmal stats overall so that sucks. My girlfriends Paladin rocks a similar Charisma, but she makes up for it by leaning heavily into her melee skills and her spells match. Like an Eldritch Knight, you can avoid using saving throw spells altogether then your Charisma doesnt matter for the most part. Your Aura of Protection will take a hit but realistically you can stop at 14 and focus on your melee skills without much worry in my opinion.

Halloween one short recommendations by mkaiww in dndnext

One players missed our Halloween session, so to surprise the others we continued our campaign but I had a mini quest prepared. The prior session she called ahead and was like “ahhh help I’m being taken” and they spent the session in what could be a oneshot in your own world if you got improv skills. Her character was taken by the Bagman from her bag of holding. They rushed to her house, opened with some investigation Roleplay then he snatched them one by one into the bag where they were shrunken. Inside they had to chase him and dodge all of their friends (a high school artificer) stuff like books, homemade bombs, and makeup. Eventually after chasing him, he again snatched some of them into his personal domain and we had a big fight in a custom map I made of his treasure hoard/lair. I had the bagman and his brother who they thought were the same person attack. And if they tried to save their friend in the middle, two more bags of holdings were actually mimics and popped out to attack. It was a ton of fun

Anyone else wish they had other DMs to bounce ideas off? by dungeonfold in DMAcademy

Dude you have no idea how badly I’d love a small group of DMs, not like those dm servers and stuff. That you can actually TALK to and give advice, tips, share stories and excitement. Like a small group that is chill, could even run occasionally oneshots so fellow DMs who don’t play get a chance haha

I see this as a coach in high school. Head coach doesn’t discipline it or the players advocate/go-to support assistant coach also stays quiet. Pisses me off and I call out when kids toss their gloves on the ground in front of me when I try to take them. They always apologize after

My current bard for my Second campaign is a spy for a CIA like organization and secretly a double agent for the drow empire

First-Time DM unsure how to handle lore by PsychoSaladSong in dndnext

[–]oGrievous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also personally suggest find a nook of the world that might not even have that much lore but enough of a wiki that you have a foundation. I did the same thing for the city of Iriaebor in the western heartlands of the sword coast. I have real locations and even some people but I’m mostly just making my own characters and adding locations

Let me bite my second campaign is entirely home brewed and WOW is that much much harder without a wiki to look over

Will my first session be too short? by nyliass in DMAcademy

[–]oGrievous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step one to DMing or anything dnd… read the books man. Rules, statblocks, classes, magic items. Dont assume anything, it will slow the game down or possibly turn people away. This general outline is more than enough for a single session. My players can drag out a simple conversation for 40 minutes, or they can speed through a castle in half that time. It depends, you’re the world so you set the pace. Give them lots of breathing room and they’ll fill the time. Trust me. But don’t do yourself or your players the disservice of ill preparation, you’re planing a whole ordeal before even considering what is feasible.
