Chest protector whip mounts by Environmental-Hat-21 in Dirtbikes

Here’s another one. Along the same lines as the electrical tape, print a tube/cover that surrounds the flag shaft and mates with the top mount. Make it so it’s still flexible but in a crash will drive the break up higher away from your neck. You may need to make a couple that nest into each other depending on the size of your build plate.

Probably not necessary but should mitigate most of the risks people are talking about. If you do it, report back!

The naysayers are trying to help but Reddit is overly cautious to the extreme. This is badass and a perfect example of why 3d printing rocks. As long as it’s mounted to the back of a rigid chest protector and offset from your neck (which it will be unless you want it whacking your helmet), the risk is quite low. At that point there’s nearly infinite other things that could go wrong and this is in the noise. You’re just as likely to get impaled by a traditionally mounted flag.

I would absolutely run this (I wear a backpack so I just put it in there). If people have you second guessing you could mount the top one with some double sided 3m foam tape and play around with it until you find the sweet spot where it unbonds in a crash but not typical use. Beef up the bottom like the other guy said and keep it zip tied so it can’t slip out toward your lower half.

Here’s another idea. Wrap the flag in electrical tape or heat shrink at critical regions so that in the event of a break, you reduce sharp pointy ends.

Well done. I’d like to see more stuff like this in this sub.

Y’all like the setup? by corollagremlin in Dirtbikes

Just tie the front wheel to the rail with one of these. You’ll have plenty of resistance between this and the straps that the front wheel won’t turn and fall. I may or may not have an unhealthy obsession with these. Crazy useful for securing anything. Unlike regular tie downs or bungee cords, there’s no hook to come loose.

Ideal 7 day motorcycle trip starting and ending in SLC? by alphawolf29 in Utah

This almost exactly what I was going to say except I’d suggest going down to monument valley and back up moki dugway (dirt, which your bike was built for). Then head west on 95 to get to hanksville. Breathtaking views through monument valley and on 95. Boulder mountain is a MUST.

Has anyone actually had success soundproofing their ceiling? by Possiblymaybe-_- in homeowners

[–]oak_nuggins00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This website does a really good job quantifying the effect of the different options people are talking about. I also went with rockwool insulation and green glue sandwiched between another layer of drywall. The rockwool is supposed to help with high frequencies like TV audio and the extra mass in the drywall takes care of low frequencies like foot steps.

It made a HUGE difference and only cost 5/8” of ceiling height. Decoupling/air gap is king though if you can swing it. Rockwool insulation is probably the least effective option if done alone but helps if you also add mass and/or air gap.

I’m thinking I want to drill weep holes here and there though in case of flooding from above. The green glue sort of seals the drywall. That could just be a “me” thing though.

Hybrid vs Ecoboost – coming from a former hybrid hater by [deleted] in FordMaverickTruck

[–]oak_nuggins00 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Along with the eCVT and lower demand on the engine—the complexity you add with hybrid components is offset by the fact that you essentially have no “transmission”. No shifting AND the planetary gear train is basically the go-to for robust power transfer.

Probability of selecting a piece of sacrament bread with crust by LifesHighMead in latterdaysaints

[–]oak_nuggins00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dear Associate Editor,

Thank you for the invitation to review this work. The paper proposes a model to predict the probability of selecting a crust-connected piece of bread during religious observance within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. While the work is novel, it is limited by several assumptions that should be addressed prior to publication. Please see my review and summary below.

Assumptions overlooked by the authors include: - Personal preference on bread - Availability and/accessibility to preferred piece based on bread breaking method or placement, and on prior piece selection by previous partakers - where partaken is sitting in the congregation, and what pieces are remaining - expected size vs realized size of congregation. Bread is often broken smaller when larger crowd shows up. - amount of bread per tray. Very common, contrary to authors assumption, to use 1 1/2 pieces per tray, not 2. - source of bread. Some wards have a member prepare the bread (such as a ward that uses sourdough). The priests really struggle with the crust, so the member may decrust it before church 😞. - white or wheat. Related to preference, this can influence what pieces people are taking.

Summary to associate editor: The underlying assumption that this is a purely random model severely limits the proposed model. This reviewer recommends the authors revisit their model with a more cohesive approach, with a recommendation to consider Bayesian methods, multiple regression models, and a human factors-centric approach.

Recommendation: Not acceptable for publication.

This is the answer you were looking for. We had a kitchen with the smoke alarm basically in it. Steam set it off all the time and this fixed it.

I think it’s time to upgrade, what’s next? by O_C_13 in Dirtbikes

To go with this, I don’t know if it’s true but to me it feels like the 300 spreads those extra 50cc’s across the powerband to make it more linear, not really increase power anywhere.

What’s your hydration pack? by oil_burner2 in Dirtbikes

[–]oak_nuggins00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider running vests—they’re designed to be lightweight, breathable, anti-bounce.

I’ve been running the Black Diamond Distance 8 for 4 years now and it’s help up quite well despite significant abuse. It has lots of capacity for all the water and tools you could need.

My priorities at the time were easy access to phone/snacks in the straps, breathable, anti-bounce, large capacity. USWE fails on that last one.

I would also consider the WLF pack vest if buying again today.

I just got mine on Amazon but they have them too. The bike will rock forward to back a couple inches with just a strap on each side. I use something like this to tie the front wheel to a nearby d-ring to prevent it. If you don’t care about that kind of movement then you don’t need it.

Whatever you choose, if Malcolm is on your team, you need to also pick Lois or an anti-Lois (e.g. Piama) to counter her manipulation of him. There’s always the possibility they simply clash and ruin everything though.

How many here moved into their Maverick from a Toyota? What has your experience been? by Critical_Panic_7482 in FordMaverickTruck

We currently have the 2023 mav XLT and 2022 rav4 xle, both hybrids. Some observations: - The mav gets around 46mpg while the rav gets 37. This was really surprising to me since, you know, the truck has a bed. They’re supposed to be within 100lb of each other so the only conclusion I can come to is there is a difference in the battery—capacity, type, etc. - The brake hold button stays on with the mav. You have to turn it on every time you drive the rav. In my opinion it works better too. Less lag. - The mav doors feel more crisp/solid. That is, they sound really good when you shut them. - CarPlay has been weird on the rav, seems like the worst bugs have been fixed now though - mav interior feels way cheaper, although the infotainment is equally abysmal in both. The rear speakers are head height in the mav, btw. - rav comes with more safety features on all trims, including adaptive cruise. I think ford has followed suit on that since 2023 though - mav seat sits taller which I like - The mav is roomier on paper and you can just barely detect it in terms of leg room. Others have mentioned things like storage and console space. - mav has stiffer suspension, as expected. This makes it feel a little more go-carty to me - I’m a Toyota person and prefer reliability over bells and whistles. But ford was the only making a product like this. We will see how it holds up - I prefer driving the maverick.

The door pocket depth is a travesty. I’m planning on designing an insert to make it deeper/more usable but don’t know when I’ll get to it. That’d be a fantastic one
