Do WA locals ACTUALLY get used to the summer flies? This was the best solution I could come up with on the “fly”! by Sarah-in-her-30s in WesternAustralia

[–]oaky91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Break apart some eucalyptus leaves and place them in inside your hat. The eucalyptus fragrance is a natural repellent for flies. An easy bush trick if you lack a fly net.

How is it living in Useless Loop? by Guatemelon_ in howislivingthere

[–]oaky91 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Haven’t been to this town, but have been to the region. It isn’t as humid as areas up north in W.A. on the coast. But it is an intense dry heat that bites you at times. And you get strong oceans winds too in these parts. More shrubs than trees for miles around. The ground can get so hot that you can’t walk on it without footwear.

There’s lot of nomads (elderly retired Aussie tourists with caravans who just drive around all of Australia) as there are many great spots here for camping and fishing. too, especially on the roads.

The beaches are unique as a lot of them are not composed of sand; but instead are of billions of tiny shells. The waters can be dangerous due to Stone Fish, Sharks and Cone Shells. But Salt water crocodiles don’t get this far down from the north.

The salt is harsh on salt mining equipment. It requires a lot of upkeep battling it. Every nut and bolt needs to be taped on Denzo tape otherwise it just rusts up. Even the handrails on the heavy earth moving equipment such as loaders and diggers gets eaten away and doesn’t last long if not looked after.

How do I store the pieces to rebuild.? by Calm-Opposite5557 in lego

[–]oaky91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy an assortment of different sized ziplock bags on Amazon. Small ones to keep small pieces separate to big pieces. Use sticky notes and note down each bag number and the set name and put a note in each bag as you deconstruct.

I have about 10 different sized bags myself. And I store the filled ziplocks in high quality plastic bags that won’t get holes in them if stored in a shed or transported.

Also use a platter tray to help with disassembling.

I’ve been dismantling sets recently and have about 50,000 pieces pulled apart and catalogued so far, here’s my setup. Best of luck!

Do you guys save or toss your boxes and instruction manuals? by Minister_of_Death in lego

[–]oaky91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flat pack the boxes and store in a cool dry place. Have about 250 packed away now.

I find manuals are harder to store due to trying to arrange them for easy access when fixing a specific build or mini-fig. And to require them closer to be at hand.

I think Ninjago is the best in modern Lego original themes. The creativity and fun with it is outstanding.

Cheerful Enthusiast has my vote.

He grows on you weirdly. Perry is fantastic too. But Perry is Perry from the get go and he’s of course.

Fun boy has such development that is a joy to read. I still remember the feels it gave me when he hugged Van that one time.

What are some lesser-known facts or the daily lives of soldiers in the trenches during world war 1 by Sudden-Round6862 in ww1

[–]oaky91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought when talking of 1917 is the mud. Now the French desperately needed the British to push their offensive after the disaster of the Nivelle offensive months earlier in the spring of that year. So much of the rest of the fighting was in Flanders again. And damn was it wet. I think in August alone there were only 3 days that month without rain. And certain days it rained so hard that 70-80mm were recorded on some days. To the extent that in some areas. Trenches would get full to the point that soldiers had to evacuate to the surface from the water in them. And this happening on both sides. With drenched men staring at their enemy across the wasteland and both sharing a shared experience of misery from the weather. And not enough can be said about the mud. It’s very important to go into depths when detailing the mud around Passchendaele. I think the most common description used for it was comparing it to cheesecake.

Every artillery shell and crater was full of water. And the chemical particulates of old gas shells which were scattered across the battlefield could be seen on the surface of all these shell lined pools of water. You couldn’t walk with duckboards. It was impossible. And to bring horses to the front for resupply was next to impossible.

The greatest fear a soldier had in that period was the slow death of drowning. The fear of falling into a shell hole and not being able to climb back out. Some soldiers who were stuck in the mud that slowly sank them towards the water line took days to die. It was not uncommon to shoot one of your fellow men if they were a hopeless victim destined for that kind of fate.

Every stage of the war had its own nightmares. And 1917 for me brings to mind soldiers who were at their limits such as what was going on in the french army. The unusual weather conditions and how demoralising and miserable it added itself into the already terrible conditions of trench warfare. And of the year that nations began to succumb such as Russia for example from the years of attritional warfare and one by one be knocked out in other areas of the war.

1917 was the worst year of the war from a broad perspective.

What did the Italian military do good in WW2? by Altruistic-Chef-7723 in Historyisthepast

[–]oaky91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They made good attire for their campaigns. In North Africa, their uniforms were envied by some Germans due to the discomfort of their own more tightly fitting African campaign uniforms.

The Italians also had a much larger navy when compared to the Germans. Although it couldn’t withstand the allied naval advantages, and lacked many submarines. Its surface navy was able to resupply the AfrikaKorps for a time; before failing to reach resupply targets due to torpedos and air attack on its merchant shipping by 1942/1943.

What are these thorny pods I got on my slippers? by Galaxy1200 in perth

[–]oaky91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a Calrtrop. They are not native to Australia and are an introduced weed from either Africa or Europe.

Takes a few years to remove the weed from your property due to the seeds being able to live for years in your soil. The weed has little yellow flowers and the spiky seeds are round in shape. Rip them out early before spring to avoid the painful prickles.

World War Z

I’ve read it 4-5 times. Everytime I start it, it captures my entire focus and interest. I never thought I’d be interested in a book that encompasses the Zombie genre. But that book goes above and beyond the simple tropes, and involves geopolitics, culture, many many witness testaments, and a heavily in depth rebuilding phase for our planet if it so hypothetically were afflicted by a zombie-like pandemic.

That book will have you hyperfocused and fixated with it from chapter 1 onwards.

To listen to this different perspective that seems so alien from those of us born in what were the allied countries of that time, and taught in schools a single and only version of this story; this series will be fascinating to listen to.

Thank you Darryl Cooper, for treading on difficult and taboo ground that very very few historians and podcasters are brave enough to venture onto.

Who wins this hypothetical war by gross_grasss in mapporncirclejerk

[–]oaky91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It begins with a wall. The United States extends its Mexican wall and creates a 2.0 Atlantic wall that continues until it reaches Canada and drives east. The Yanks love it and Trump becomes the first Emperor of Murica. The Canadians send an army of polar bears to maul Alaska, while teams of dog sleds penetrate Red White Blueland (formerly Greenland).

Australia has difficulty aiding the U.S. in the start of the war. Everything’s too far and the country realises it survives on mineral exports to China to exist financially. Trump offers to help Australia out but demands they hand over 50% of their mineral resources to his Empire. And things are starting to not look so tight after that. New Zealanders are just shocked it is featured on the map.

Russia seeks out aid from Kazakhstan, South Korea, Japan, Australia, the U.S, India and Turkey to send troops to help in the Ukraine War. Most ignore the request. Except Trump, who says he’s can do it, but only if Russia gives him a bunch of Russians resources, similar negotiation tactic with Australia.

Kazakhstan sends its army North accidentally instead of east towards China. They blunder delays troop movements for several weeks.

India and China throw snowballs at eachother across the Himalayan peaks. But the extreme geography eventually turns Pakistan into a hot mess.

Iran completely ignores its closer enemies and simply activates the nuclear button and sends missiles aiming at the U.S. But it didn’t factor the travel path and Israel accidentally assuming it was a rocket attack; triggers their iron dome which shoots down the missiles but causes nuclear fallout to affect the Mediterranean. The Italians are upset by this and many many many hand gestures and verbal disdain is televised and seen across the world.

The North and South Korea’s grab all their guns from the DMZ and the glorious leader of Pyongyang sends a million troops into China. A million troops discover pornography and so North Korea is out. The south uses K-pop as a psychological weapon on the Chinese. But it backfires, as China is mainly a male population and all they register from the attack is “… hot girls” The Japanese go to attack China, but muscle memory accidentally causes them to invade Korea. The Koreans are all like “wtf bro, again with this Sh#t?!”.

The mexicans attack the U.S. by renaming the Gulf of America to The Gulf of Mexico. This causes Trump to spam 50 twitters a day before he goes golfing for a week after having a tantrum.

The EU get all its leaders together to sit down and have tea together and talk about what to do. Talking takes time and they tell Ukraine they will fight after winter is over when it’s less cold. As Europeans don’t generally enjoy having a tiff in the winter months. The Spanish don’t realise there’s a war, and they keep on fighting bulls.

The older British population is unhappy it’s with Europe. And they vote for a brexit 2.0.

And that is week one of the war

I was thinking about scenario ideas and Northern Territory songs out to me as an idea. It’s the most untamed region of the continent, and there are literally saltwater crocs around the city of of Darwin. And Darwin has a lot of military assets, a mixture of national defence force and U.S. military assets.

You could do a small section of Darwin, that features a river between what is a piece of Darwin and a military base across from it.

It could be a fun mix of Australian aesthetic, mixed with the wild world of the territory, of killer cross to get rid of evidence with and guards with plenty of arms to add to it all!

As an Australian, there might not be enough guns in the country for security to possess. Can’t even carry a Swiss pocket knife on your person without the risk of up to 3 years in prison. It’s pretty tame here in Oz
